A well-bred and multiple stakes-placed horse who won the Irish Cesarewitch on his final start, El Salvador stands at Killack Stud in Co Wexford and he has the potential to become a successful National Hunt sire.
A handful of his first foals were offered in 2016 and they made up to €8,500. He is by the dual Derby hero and great stallion Galileo (by Sadler's Wells), he is a full-brother to the listed winner and Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes third Galactic Star, and he is out of the Group 1 Coronation Stakes heroine Balisada (by Kris).
His grandam, Balnaha (by Lomond), is a winning full-sister to the Group 2 Child Stakes (now Falmouth Stakes) winner and Group 1 Coronation Stakes runner-up Inchmurrin and that filly, of course, became the dam of the Group 1-placed triple pattern scorer Inchinor (by Ahonoora). He died young but left us with the Group 1 winners Cape Of Good Hope, Latice, Notnowcato and Summoner, among others of note.
El Salvador (IRE) – ch.2009 – Galileo – Balisada, 7 wins inc 2nd Lenebane Stakes (L), Martin Molony Stakes (L), 3rd Vintage Crop Stakes (L), Saval Beg Stakes (L). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2016.

The Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes, run over 10 furlongs at Leopardstown, has an excellent record of producing top-class horses since the turn of the century, and although Battle Of Marengo did not go on to win at the highest level afterwards, he was Group 2-placed at Royal Ascot, and was beaten by less than two lengths when finishing fourth to Ruler Of The World in the Derby at Epsom. Timeform rated him 117.
The Ballyhane Stud stallion, who covered 117 mares in his first season, was also a leading juvenile (Timeform 116p). He was third over seven furlongs at Leopardstown on his debut in August, followed that with an 11-length score over the same trip at Gowran Park and then beat subsequent Irish Derby star Trading Leather by one and three-quarter lengths in a mile listed contest at Leopardstown before easily winning the Group 2 Beresford Stakes over the same trip in heavy ground at the Curragh. His first foals made up to 55,000gns.
Battle Of Marengo is by the dual Derby hero and great stallion Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) and so he is by the sire of the northern hemisphere classic stallions Teofilo, New Approach and Frankel. Other Galileo sons who have got at least one top-level winner to their name, so far, are Cima De Triomphe, Heliostatic, Rip Van Winkle, Roderic O'Connor, Sixties Icon, and Soldier Of Fortune.
He is a full-brother to the Group 2 Debutante Stakes runner-up Perhaps, he is out of the Listed Victor McCalmont Stakes winner Anna Karenina (by Green Desert), and his dam's blacktype siblings include Windsor Palace (by Danehill Dancer), the Group 3 Mooresbridge Stakes winner who picked up third place in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. The mare's siblings also include the dam of Group 3 Round Tower Stakes scorer Rabatash (by Johannesburg). Simaat (by Mr Prospector), the winning grandam of Battle Of Marengo, is out of the listed-placed six-times US scorer Satiety (by Our Native) and that mare was a full-sister to 1979's US juvenile champion Rockhill Native. The triple Grade 1 star's three-year-old form included a win in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes and third place in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes. There are other blacktype winners to be found under these first four generations of the family, but nothing that gives us any clues as to Battle Of Marengo's stallion potential. Being a high-class son of Galileo, and out of a stakes-winning Green Desert (by Danzig) mare, has attracted plenty of support for him, and although some of his first crop will win as two-year-olds, it is likely that his best results will come with three-year-olds and older horses, from a mile and upwards. BATTLE OF MARENGO (IRE) – b.2010 – Galileo – Anna Karenina, 5 wins inc Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes (Gr2), Beresford Stakes (Gr2), Ballysax Stakes (Gr3), Golden Fleece Stakes (L), 2nd King Edward VII Stakes (Gr2). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2016.

Galileo's status as one of the greatest stallions of all times is without question and now that his a string of his earliest sons and daughters at stud are coming up with Group/Grade 1 winners too he appears to be on the verge of forging his own dynasty.
Of course, not every one of his sons is going to become a leading sire, but so far Teofilo and New Approach have sired European classic winners, and each of Cima De Triomphe, Frankel, Heliostatic, Rip Van Winkle, Roderic O'Connor, Sixties Icon and Soldier Of Fortune has got at least one winner at the highest level somewhere among the world's Category I countries. The string of Galileo stallions at earlier stages of their stud careers includes the dual Derby hero Australia. The Coolmore Stud team member covered 178 mares in his first season, only a handful of his first foals appeared in an auction ring, but they made up to 300,000gns. Clearly, he is one of the most exciting individuals among this group of sires and likely to be a star player at the yearling sales of 2017. Timeform-rated 116p at two, following his impressive defeat of Free Eagle in a Group 3 contest at Leopardstown, he finished third to Night Of Thunder and Kingman in a particularly strong edition of the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket before going on to take both the Derby and Irish Derby in style. He added victory in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes and was not seen out again after his shock neck defeat by The Grey Gatsby, the colt he beat by two lengths at York, in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.
His Timeform rating of 132 put him 2lbs behind his dual Derby-winning sire Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) and 7lbs ahead of his outstanding dam Ouija Board (by Cape Cross), the dual Oaks and dual Breeders' Cup heroine whose career tally of 10 wins also featured the Prince of Wales's Stakes, Hong Kong Vase and Nassau Stakes.
Her first foal is the Australian Group 3-winning gelding Voodoo Prince (by Kingmambo) and her Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old Frontiersman (by Dubawi) has been runner-up in both the Group 1 Coronation Cup and Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes this season, beaten by Highland Reel and Hawkbill respectively. Ouija Board was the best of two blacktype earners for her dam, Selection Board (by Welsh Pageant). The next dam is the Group 3 Falmouth Stakes fourth Ouija (by Silly Season) and although the plethora of pattern winners that descend from that mare do not contain any notable sires, that should not detract from Australia's potential. Most of those major winners have been fillies, and they include the classic-placed Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Roseate Tern (by Blakeney), mile Group 1 star Red Bloom (by Selkirk), German classic scorer Full Rose (by Aqlaam) and the classic-placed pattern winner Red Camellia (by Polar Falcon). There are, of course, males among the family's big winners, but Grade 1-placed stakes winner Red Fort (by Green Desert) was a gelding, as was the outstanding Teleprompter. A full-brother to Australia's grandam Selection Board, Teleprompter was one of a handful of top-class geldings who were pivotal in bringing about an end to the barring of his type from Group 1 events in England and Ireland, and although he did not win one here, he did take the Grade 1 Arlington Million across the Atlantic. His half-sister Rosia Bay (by High Top), dam of the aforementioned Roseate Tern, was also responsible for the four-times Group 1 star Ibn Bey (by Mill Reef), and it is a little surprising that in the Breeders' Cup coverage each year, when European dirt performances come up for discussion, that his second-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic is not mentioned. Ibn Bey did spend time at stud but, in common with most sons of the great Mill Reef (by Never Bend) – Shirley Heights and his male line descendants being the notable exception – he failed to make an impact in that role. That should not be held as a mark against Australia as their actual relationship is somewhat distant and the younger chestnut represents a male line that has become a powerful force, one that has been as successful as the Mill Reef one was disappointing. Australia will, of course, get two-year-old winners as a freshman in 2018 and it is likely that there will be some blacktype earners among them. It is as three-year-old and older horses, however, that most of his offspring will be seen to best effect, and with his combination of race record, pedigree and breeder support, there is every reason to hope that he not waste much time in adding his name to the growing list of Galileo stallions getting at least one winner at the highest level. AUSTRALIA (GB) – ch.2011 – Galileo – Ouija Board, 5 wins inc Derby (Gr1), Irish Derby (Gr1), Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr1), Golden Fleece Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Irish Champion Stakes (Gr1), 3rd 2000 Guineas (Gr1). Irish Derby hero Treasure Beach is a son of the great Galileo (by Sadler's Wells), whose stallion sons include Teofilo and New Approach, and he stands at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Florida. He covered 101 mares in his first season, 103 in his second and it seems likely that his best results will come with turf horses
He is a half-brother to Listed Oaks Trial winner Honor Bound (by Authorized) and to Listed Derby Trial second Elidor (by Cape Cross), and his dam, Honorine (by Mark Of Esteem), is a triple winning half-sister to Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes scorer Indian Creek (by Indian Ridge).
That horse also won the Group 3 Gordon Stakes and Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes and the races in which he was placed featured the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes and two editions of the Group 1 Champion Stakes. Blue Water (by Bering), the grandam of Treasure Beach, won a listed contest in France and was third in the Group 3 Prix de Flore. Her siblings include a pattern-placed multiple French winner and her grandam, Radiance (by Blakeney), won the Group 3 Prix Corrida. A classic star who notched up six wins and three Group 1-placings from just nine starts, Intello was among the most sought-after stallions at the recent Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale and it can be expected that his stock will also be popular at all of the other major auctions of the year. He spent his first two seasons at Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket, stood at Haras du Quesnay in 2016, and there are 80 known individuals in his first crop.
Intello won both his starts as a juvenile, mile contests at Longchamp and Maisons-Laffitte in the autumn, his classic success was a two-length defeat of Morandi in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby), he was third in a blanket finish for the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas), third to the brilliant Moonlight Cloud in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois, and rounded off his career with a third place finish behind the outstanding pair Treve and Orfevre in the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
In addition to being a son of one of the world's greatest stallions, a horse whose early sire sons include the leading pair Teofilo and New Approach, he also has the attraction of representing one of the most famous families in the stud book.
He is the second foal out of Impressionnante (by Danehill), who won the Group 2 Prix de Sandringham and was runner-up in both the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) and Group 1 Prix d'Astarte, and his grandam is the Group 1 Prix de la Foret and Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest heroine Occupandiste (by Kaldoun). That champion has three other blacktype winners to her name and one of that trio is Mondialiste (by Galileo), last year's Grade 1 Woodbine Mile winner and Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile runner-up who added to his tally with victory in the Grade 1 Arlington Million earlier this month. Occupandiste's daughter Only Answer (by Green Desert) was a high-class sprinter, who won the Group 3 Prix de Saint-Georges and Group 3 Prix du Petit Couvert, and her dam, Only Seule (by Lyphard), is out of the Group 2 Prix d'Astarte scorer Elle Seule (by Exclusive Native). That makes her a half-sister to Group 1 July Cup champion and blacktype sire Elnadim (by Danzig) and also to Mehthaaf (by Nureyev), the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine whose descendants include this year's classic-placed Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois star Ribchester (by Iffraaj). Khulood (by Storm Cat), who won the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, is also a half-sister to Only Seule and her three-year-old Adool (by Teofilo) has a return to pattern company in her sights following a recent listed success at Gowran Park. The Dermot Weld-trained chestnut has won two of her three starts, her only defeat being a third place finish against the older Decorated Knight in the Group 3 Meld Stakes at Leopardstown last month. The fifth dam of Intello is, of course, the Grade 1 Matron Stakes winner Fall Aspen (by Pretense), one of the most celebrated broodmares of all time. In addition to the Group/Grade 1 winners Hamas (by Danzig; blacktype sire), Timber Country (by Woodman; Grade 1 sire), Northern Aspen (by Northern Dancer) and Fort Wood (by Sadler's Wells; Group 1 sire), she came up with the Group 2 scorers Bianconi (by Danzig; Group 1 sire) and Colorado Dancer (by Shareef Dancer; dam of Timeform 140-rated superstar Dubai Millennium), and others of note. There are no guarantees in this industry, and the better stallions are some way back in his pedigree, but there is every reason to hope that classic star Intello can become another top-class stallion son of the mighty Galileo (by Sadler's Wells). INTELLO (GER) – b.2010 – Galileo – Impressionnante, 6 wins inc Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1), Prix Messidor (Gr3), Prix du Prince d'Orange (Gr3), Fielden Stakes (L), 3rd Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr1), Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr1), Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr1). There are 161 known members of his first crop. The Beeches Stud resident is a half-brother to Derby runner-up The Great Gatsby (by Sadler's Wells), to the Group 1-placed pair Roman Empress (by Sadler's Wells) and Magritte (by Sadler's Wells), and also to Mount Athos (by Montjeu), the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes and Group 3 Ormonde Stakes winner who finished third to Fiorente in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup in 2013. In addition to prolific Grade 1 sire Oscar, Imperial Monarch's dam Ionian Sea (by Slip Anchor) is also a half-sister to Blue Stag (by Sadler's Wells), the listed scorer who chased home Quest For Fame in 1990's edition of the Derby at Epsom. The Sadler's Wells line has had a profound influence on National Hunt racing and breeding, and although this representative of it will have foals and yearlings on offer at the jumps-oriented sales later in the year, and may have the occasional flat runner in the next few seasons, his best sales results are likely to begin at the various store horses auctions in 2018 and 2019. After that we can expect to see bumper, point-to-point and hurdles winners for him, chasers following when his progeny are a bit older, and it seems likely that he will become a successful blacktype sire within National Hunt circles.
