The top two-year-old colt in Australia following a six-furlong Group 2 success and a second-place finish in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes, Sidestep (by Exceed And Excel) was also a Group 2-winning sprinter at three and he shuttles to Haras du Logis. There were 61 foals in his first French crop.

He is by the sire of successful young stallions Excelebration and Helmet and he is out one of three notable offspring of mile Group 2 scorer Dextrous (by Quest For Fame). Those two siblings are also at stud, they are both by Commands (by Danehill), and they are Group 1 scorer Skilled and Group 1-placed Group 2-winning sprinter Ambidexter.

Dextrous is a half-sister to Group 1 AJC Oaks runner-up Light Work (by Danehill), she is out of Group 3-placed Many Hands (by Handy Proverb), and the next dam is an unraced half-sister to dual Australian champion and prolific Group 1 star Emancipation (by Bletchingly).

In addition to being a standout one the track, Emancipation also made an impact at stud. Group 2 scorer and Group 1 AJC Derby runner-up Royal Pardon (by Vice Regal) was her best runner on the track, but her many stakes-winning descendants include the Group 1 scorers Stratum Star (by Stratum), Virage De Fortune (by Anabaa), Rumya (by Red Ransom), and Railings (by Zabeel).

Sidestep is likely to get high-class two-year-olds plus three-year-olds and older horses who prove best as sprinters or milers, with some who stay a bit farther. It will be interesting to see how his European stock fare, and although his best results may come in the southern hemisphere, it would be no surprise to see some stakes and pattern winners among his runners here.

Timeform-rated 116 at two and three years of age, Outstrip (by Exceed And Excel) was a popular addition to the team at Dalham Hall Stud and there were 86 foals from his initial triple-digit book.

He won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and the Group 2 Champagne Stakes, finished third to Kingman in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes, and looks likely to get his best winners at up to 10 furlongs, with some potentially getting a bit farther. His two-year-olds are likely to be seen to best effect in the autumn.

The best representative of nine-furlong Grade 1 winner Asi Siempre (by El Prado), he is a great-grandson of Group 3 Cherry Hinton Stakes and Group 3 Park Stakes winner Turkish Treasure (by Sir Ivor), which means that his unraced grandam, Siempre Asi (by Silver Hawk), is a half-sister to Group 3 Norfolk Stakes winner Magic Mirror (by Nureyev).

That colt, who was also fourth in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, sired some winners from limited opportunities, his siblings included pattern-placed juvenile listed winner Treasure Trove (by Try My Best) and also Exciting (by Mill Reef), the mare who gave us Almushtarak (by Fairy King) and Tiber (by Titus Livius).

The latter excelled in Hong Kong, whereas Group 2-winning miler Almushtarak was placed in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Group 1 Lockinge Stakes and two editions of the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, hitting a peak end-of-season Timeform rating of 122.

Outstrip’s top foal made €90,000, he is by the sire of successful young sires Excelebration and Helmet, and it will be interesting to see how his second career turns out.

The Exceed And Excel stallions Bungle Inthejungle and Burwaaz also have their first yearlings in Europe in 2017.

Kuroshio is a full-brother to a pattern-winning sprinter in Australia and she, Believe'n'Succeed, is the dam of Bounding (by Lonhro). A prolific blacktype scorer from five and a half to seven furlongs in Australia and New Zealand, including the Group 1 Railway Stakes over six furlongs at Ellerslie, that sprint ace has been classic-placed at a mile.
 
Their dam, Arctic Drift (by Gone West), won once and is out of the top US filly November Snow (by Storm Cat), winner of the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes and Grade 1 Test Stakes, both at Saratoga, and a full-sister to Grade 3 winner and somewhat successful blacktype sire Scatmandu.
 
Kuroshio was a Group 3 scorer at two and a Group 2 winner at three, and from the handful of European mares he has covered, this well-connected sprinter should be capable of getting some useful sprinters and milers.

Burwaaz covered a small book of mares at Hedgeholme Stud and had just 14 foals from his first season. He was a talented sprinter whose best form came as a two-year-old, the age at which Timeform rated him 108.

He is by the sire of Group 1 sires Excelebration and Helmet and he is out of the pattern-placed juvenile sprint stakes winner Nidhaal (by Observatory). She was the best of five winners out of her dam, and that granddaughter of Woodman (by Mr Prospector) is, in turn, out of an unraced half-sister to three horses of particular note.

Assert (by Be My Guest) won the Group 1 Irish Derby, Group 1 Benson & Hedges Gold Cup (now Juddmonte International Stakes), Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby), and Group 1 Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes.

His half-brother Bikala (by Kalamoun) also won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club, he got a second top-level success in the Group 1 Prix Ganay, and the races in which he was placed included the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

That pair disappointed at stud but their half-sister Eurobird (by Ela-Mana-Mou) came up with two listed race winners and she is the grandam of the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Pounced (by Rahy), the Allevamento di Besnate stallion whose progeny include the classic-placed Italian Group 2 scorer Full Drago.

Some of his first crop are inbred to Danehill and/or to Danzig (by Northern Dancer). It seems likely that a few useful handicappers may be the best that can be expected from him.

There are currently two major branches of the Danzig (by Northern Dancer) sire line – Green Desert and Danehill – and early signs that a third one, via War Front, may be emerging. Rathasker Stud stallion Bungle Inthejungle is a son of leading Australian sire Exceed And Excel (by Danehill) and, with 119 mares covered in his first season, he was among the busiest members of this cohort of stallions.

Rated 110 on the official handicap at two, and 109 by Timeform, his best form came that season when he won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood and the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot, between which he was a half-length runner-up to Sir Prancealot in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster.

Inbred 4x4x4 to Northern Dancer (by Nearctic), Bungle Inthejungle is one of nine winners out of the dual scorer Licence To Thrill (by Wolfhound) and that makes him a half-brother to the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen Stakes winner Muarrab (by Oasis Dream), a full-brother to listed scorer Waveband, and a half-brother to the pattern-placed pair Group Therapy (by Choisir) and Classic Encounter (by Lujain).

Bungle Inthejungle will be expected to get some early juveniles, and it is likely that most of his best progeny will be sprinters, but with some of the mares from whom his first crop have been born, some of them may be effective at around a mile.
