Bridge House Stud stallion Cappella Sansevero (by Showcasing) was among the best early-season juveniles of his year, winning the Listed Marble Hill Stakes and chasing home The Wow Signal in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, but he also held his form through to the end of the year.
He was only beaten by half a length and a short-head when third to Dick Whittington and Kool Company in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes on soft ground at the Curragh, three weeks before taking the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes on good-to-yielding at the same course and distance. Then, in mid-October, he was a one-and-three-quarter-length fourth to Charming Thought in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. Timeform rated him 109 at two and 104 at three, the latter representing his close sixth-place finish in the seven-furlong Ballycorus Stakes at Leopardstown. That proved to be his final start and it came just weeks after two unplaced classic attempts at a mile.
He is by the sire of six-furlong Group 1 stars Quiet Reflection and Advertise, he got 56 foals in his first crop, and he is the first offspring of the winning Madam President (by Royal Applause). She is a half-sister to Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes runner-up Eldalil (by Singspiel), her dam is one-time scorer White House (by Pursuit Of Love), and the next dam is the dual two-year-old winner Much Too Risky (by Bustino).
That mare is, of course, the dam of the Group 1-placed middle-distance Group 2 winners Little Rock (by Warning) and Whitewater Affair (by Machiavellian), of classic-placed dual middle-distance Group 3 scorer Short Skirt (by Diktat) and to three other blacktype horses. Whitewater Affair, of course, has been an outstanding broodmare in Japan where she has been represented by Group 1 Yasuda Kinen scorer Asakusa Den’en (by Singspiel) and by the even more talented Victoire Pisa (by Neo Universe). A champion at three and four years of age, he won the Group 1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), Group 1 Arima Kinen, and Group 1 Dubai World Cup, he was placed in both the Group 1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) and Group 1 Japan Cup, and the early runners by the Shadai Stallion Station resident feature classic heroine Jeweler. If you go back another generation then you will find that Much Too Risky’s siblings include Group 1 Irish St Leger winner Arctic Owl (by Mot Welcome) and Group 1 Sydney Cup scorer Marooned (by Mill Reef), further evidence of the strong stamina influence that this family had for so long. Cappella Sansevero, however, represents an emerging speed branch of the line, both as a grandson of sprint champion and classic sire Oasis Dream (by Green Desert) and out of a mare who represents a Royal Applause (by Waajib) – Pursuit Of Love (by Groom Dancer) cross. His speed, his precocity, and the more immediate elements of his pedigree combine to paint a picture of a young stallion who is like to do well with all age groups, getting his best runners in the five to eight-furlong range. The presence of a successful stallion in the distaff side of his family is also encouraging, even if that horse’s talents are notably different and his actual relationship remote. CAPPELLA SANSEVERO (GB) - b.2012 - Showcasing - Madam President, 4 wins inc Round Tower Stakes (Gr3), Marble Hill Stakes (L), 2nd Coventry Stakes (Gr2), 3rd Phoenix Stakes (Gr1). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2017.
