Bahamian Bounty son Anjaal is free of Danzig blood

ANJAAL (GB) - 2011 chestnut horse

With so many stallions representing the Danehill, Green Desert, Galileo or other branches of the Northern Dancer (by Nearctic) male line, it is no surprise that a speedy colt from a different line should prove so popular when going to stud.

Anjaal (by Bahamian Bounty) is a grandson of Cadeaux Genereux (by Young Generation), he has no Danzig blood in his pedigree, but he has Nureyev (by Northern Dancer) as his dam’s grandsire. Nureyev was a three-parts brother to Sadler’s Wells (by Northern Dancer), and so Anjaal is not an outcross for most horses from that line given that outcross – a term too often misused these days – means no duplicated ancestors within the first five generations of the pedigree.

He got off the mark at the second attempt as a juvenile, scoring by four lengths over five furlongs at Beverley in early June, and followed that with a narrow win in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket. His only other outing that season resulted in a fourth-place finish behind War Command in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.

He ran five times as a three-year-old but was unplaced in four, and yet, with a three-quarter-length third to Es Que Love in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes the highlight of his campaign, he finished the year on a much higher Timeform rating than he’d achieved at two – 117 versus 107 – which suggests that many of his progeny may also be better as three-year-olds and older horses than the level they achieve at two.

The Rathasker Stud team member has a very large first crop (145) to represent him and he looks likely to get his best winners in the broad five to 12-furlong range.

The latter may surprise some, but this half-brother to a Czech National Hunt blacktype scorer is out of dual French middle-distance winner Ballymore Celebre (by Peintre Celebre) and from a family that has yielded blacktype horses over a wide range of distances.

Her half-brother Nysaean (by Sadler’s Wells) won the Group 3 Gallinule Stakes, two editions of the Group 3 Mooresbridge Stakes, and finished third in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, whereas another sibling, Charme Slave (by Sicyos), won a listed sprint in France, and Celtic Cavalier (by Caerleon) was runner-up in the Group 1 National Stakes.

Their siblings also include Lili Cup (by Fabulous Dancer) and she is the dam of pattern-placed middle-distance stakes winner All The Aces (by Spartacus) and of Uruk (by Efisio), a sprint pattern winner whose descendants include Group 3 Prix Miesque heroine Dame Du Roi (by Dark Angel) and Group 2-placed French stayer Lucky Look (by Teofilo).

Third dam Arme d’Or (by Armistice) was runner-up in both the Grand Prix de Deauville and Prix Maurice de Nieuil,  the best of her offspring was Morold (by Sir Gaylord), a triple Grade 2 scorer from eight to 12 furlongs, and many of her most notable descendants also showed their best form in the 10-14 furlong range.

The dams of Anjaal’s offspring may determine their prospects. His large initial crop size makes it likely he will have a lot of early-season two-year-old runners – some of whom may become winners – but if what he passes on is something of the distaff side of his pedigree rather than the five to eight-furlong potential of his sire, then those individuals will need a bit more time and distance, hence his potential to get capable performers over a wide range of distances.
