Two of the factors that we consider when examining the future potential of any stallion are his sire line and the presence or absence of successful stallions within the distaff side of his family. In the case of Highclere Stud’s talented six-to-eight-furlong performer Cable Bay, we have a horse who passes both of those tests with flying colours.

He is a son of Group 1 winning sprinter and leading international sire Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert), and so is by the horse who gave us Group 1 sires Lawman and I Am Invincible, among others who have come up with stakes and pattern winners.

His dam, Rose de France (by Diktat), is a half-sister to notable broodmare Moyesii (by Diesis) – the dam of Group 1 scorers Kirklees (by Jade Robbery) and Mastery (by Sulamani) – and although it remains to be seen how that mare’s Group 1-winning grandson Mukhadram (by Shamardal) will be viewed in the coming years, the first juveniles by that young Nunnery Stud stallion are off the mark this year.

What stands out, however, with regard to the stallion potential of both that horse and Cable Bay is that Rose de France and Moyesii are daughters of star sprinter Cherokee Rose (by Dancing Brave). The fastest representative of her Timeform 140-rated sire, she won the Group 1 Sprint Cup and Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, she was runner-up in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, and she is a half-sister to Volksraad (by Green Desert).

He was lightly raced and earned his blacktype when third in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes over seven furlongs, but he went on to become a prolific champion sire in New Zealand. He and Cable Bay are somewhat closely related.

There are plenty of other talented horses under the various branches of just these first three generations of the pedigree, but they do not tell us anything more about this young stallion’s potential.

Cable Bay got 109 foals in his first crop, so he won’t be short of representation, and it seems likely that some of his offspring could do well as juveniles, mostly in the second half of the season. He was runner-up in each of the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, Group 2 Richmond Stakes and Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at that age.

His top wins came in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes and Group 3 John of Gaunt Stakes – over seven furlongs – as a four-year-old, and so his best results are likely to come with his three-year-olds and older horses, in the six to 10-furlong range. There is every reason to hope that his top offspring will surpass his 119 Timeform rating.

Nothing is guaranteed in this business, but there can be no doubt that Kingman is one of the most exciting horses to have gone to stud in recent decades. Horses such as Sadler's Wells, Galileo and Sea The Stars had such obvious potential when they began their stallion careers, and although Kingman has a monumental task ahead of him to join that elite trio, it is hard to imagine him failing to get winners at the highest levels.

He was a brilliant racehorse, a Timeform 134-rated champion and classic star, a high-class two-year-old who went on to win four Group 1s over a mile. He covered an outstanding first book of 143 mares at Banstead Manor Stud, his first crop includes a half-sister to this year's Derby hero Wings Of Eagles (by Pour Moi), and his first foals made up to €320,000.

What makes him such an exciting prospect is that all of this is backed up by a stallion's pedigree.

He is a son of the Group 1-winning sprinter Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert), whose early stallion sons include the Group 1-siring horses Lawman and I Am Invincible, and he is out of Zenda (by Zamindar), the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) winning half-sister to the triple Group 1 star and outstanding stallion Oasis Dream (by Green Desert).

​Their dam, Hope (by Dancing Brave), is an unraced full-sister to the Group 1 Irish Oaks heroine Wemyss Bight and her offspring include the four-times Group/Grade 1 star Beat Hollow (by Sadler's Wells), a sire of top-level winners on the flat and under National Hunt rules. Hope's siblings also include the dam of Group 1-winning stayer Reefscape (by Linamix), and of Group 2 scorers Bellamy Cay (by Kris), Coastal Path (by Halling) and Martaline (by Linamix).

Bahamian (by Mill Reef), the Group 2 Prix de Pomone runner-up and Listed Oaks Trial scorer who is the third dam of Kingman, is also the third dam of the Group 2 Prix Chaudennay scorer Doha Dream (by Shamardal) and of New Bay (by Dubawi), who has completed his first season at Ballyinch Stud.

New Bay won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby), Group 2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano and Group 3 Prix Gontaut Biron, he chased home Make Believe in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas), was third to Golden Horn in the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and fourth to Almanzor in a vintage edition of the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

This famous Juddmonte family is one of the strongest in the stud book. It has already given us an elite stallion in Oasis Dream, and with Kingman being so closely related to that Banstead Manor Stud standout, there is every reason to hope that he too can become a leading sire.

The Green Desert branch of the Danzig (by Northern Dancer) sire line has become one of the strongest in Europe and in Charm Spirit it has a Timeform 127-rated triple Group 1 mile star who comes from a famous sire-producing family. He covered 138 mares in his first season at Tweenhills Farm & Stud, he stood the 2016 season at Haras de Bonneval in France, was back at his original base in 2017, and he is an exciting prospect whose first foals made up to 140,000gns.
 
Charm Spirit was a Group 1-placed winner from three starts as a juvenile and his only defeat from six starts at three was his fifth-place finish in a vintage edition of the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Remarkably, he was not his sire's best son that year as that honour went to the four-times Group 1 star Kingman, and that Timeform 134-rated champion also has his first yearlings now.

Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert) won the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock and he was not a particularly highly-rated horse for a winner at that level, assessed by Timeform at just 121. As a stallion, however, he has been outstanding and in addition to his long and growing list of top-level winners, he is also excelling with his early stallion sons and broodmare daughters.
 
Australian-based I Am Invincible is the sire of Group 1-winning son Brazen Beau – who has had his first foals in 2017 – and Ballylinch Stud's classic star Lawman has been represented by the classic winners Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Just The Judge and Group 1 St Leger star Harbour Law.
 
Vale Of York has sired stakes winners, Zebedee is the sire of the high-class sprinter Magical Memory, and Cheveley Park Stud's Group 1-winning sprinter Mayson, one of the leading freshman sires of 2016, already has four individual stakes winners to his name. Born To Sea's first three-year-olds include the classic-placed pattern winner Sea Of Grace, and current freshman Swiss Spirit has already sired several two-year-old winners in his first crop. All of this augurs well for Charm Spirit, Kingman and the other Invincible Spirit colts going to stud now and in the future.

Charm Spirit is the first foal out of the dual French winner L'Enjoleuse (by Montjeu) and that half-sister to Group 3-placed filly Megac Bliss (by Soviet Star) is out of Machaera (by Machiavellian), an unraced half-sister to four stakes winners. One of those was the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Russian Bond (by Danzig) and another was his Group 2 Temple Stakes-winning full-brother Snaadee, who achieved some success at stud without making an impact.
 
Their half-sister Sombreffe (by Polish Precedent) did her bit for the family by coming up with the classic-placed German Group 1 scorer Ransom O'War (by Red Ransom), but it is in the fourth generation of the family that you start to find the biggest names in this clan's roll of honour.
 
The fourth dam of Charm Spirit is the prolific Ciboulette (by Chop Chop) and this means that Somfas (by What A Pleasure), his third dam, was a half-sister to the champion filly and hugely influential broodmare Fanfreluche (by Northern Dancer) and to that star’s full-brother Night Shift, a leading sire whose Group 1 tally included classic winners.
 
Those who descend from Fanfreluche are distantly related to Charm Spirit, but when you have top stallions such as Flying Spur (by Danehill), Encosta De Lago (by Fairy King) and Holy Roman Emperor (by Danehill) among them, along with others who have had varying levels of success as sires, then that offers hope that their younger relation can also do well in his new role. Depending on the mares, the best of his offspring are likely to effective in the six to 10-furlong range.

One of a growing number of stallion sons for the excellent Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert), this Whitsbury Manor Stud resident is by the sire of Lawman, Mayson, Vale Of York, Zebedee and I Am Invincible. There are 73 in his first crop.

Stakes-placed at two and a high-class sprinter at three and four years of age, Swiss Spirit was unlucky not to have won the Group 2 Temple Stakes. He was badly impeded at the start, flew home and was only beaten by a neck by Kingsgate Native.

He is a half-brother to the Group 3 Prix de Meautry and Group 3 Prix du Petit Couvert heroine Swiss Diva (by Pivotal), to the triple stakes-winning sprinter Swiss Dream (by Oasis Dream) and also to Swiss Franc (by Mr Greeley), who was runner-up in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes.

Their dam, Swiss Lake (by Indian Ridge), won the Listed St Hugh's Stakes and Listed Lansdown Stakes, she was runner-up in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes, and she is the better of two stakes horses out of listed-placed sprinter Blue Iris (by Petong).

The next dam, juvenile winner Bo' Babbity (by Strong Gale), was a half-sister to Anita's Prince (by Stradavinsky), a Group 1-placed pattern winning sprinter whose progeny included the multiple stakes-winning sprinter and 16-times scorer Carranita.
