Dual Derby hero Galileo has done what seemed impossible during the career of his phenomenal sire Sadler's Wells (by Northern Dancer) – he has become an even greater sire of racehorses than was his father. His early stallion sons have showed plenty of potential, a growing number of them already have at least one top-level winner to their name, and New Approach is one of the most notable members of that list. The juvenile star became a Derby and Champion Stakes hero at three. His first crop included a trio of Royal Ascot-winning blacktype two-year-olds, and by the end of the following season that initial group of offspring featured the Group 1 2000 Guineas hero Dawn Approach, the Group 1 Oaks winner and Group 1 St Leger runner-up Talent, and the Group 1 Derby runner-up Libertarian. The latter, who won the Group 2 Dante Stakes and finished fourth (no blacktype) to Leading Light in the Group 1 St Leger, is now among the early Galileo grandsons at stud and the first foals of this Knockhouse Stud stallion, made up to €11,000. He is being marketed for the National Hunt sector. A half-brother to the Group 1-placed pattern scorer Prince Siegfried (by Royal Applause) and to the French listed race winner Bigzam (by Zamindar), Libertarian is out of Intrum Morshaan (by Darshaan), a winning half-sister to the US Grade 3 scorer Coney Kitty (by Lycius). His stakes-placed third dam, Midnight Child (by Manado), was a half-sister to the multiple listed-placed Never A Lady (by Pontifex) and that mare's descendants include the prolific Group 1 star and classic sire Halling (by Diesis). The Sadler's Wells sire line has had a tremendous impact on both the flat and National Hunt sectors and so it is a fair bet that Libertarian will eventually join its roll of honour as a sire of blacktype-winning hurdlers and chasers. LIBERTARIAN (GB) – b.2010 – New Approach – Intrum Morshaan, 2 wins inc Dante Stakes (Gr2), 2nd Derby (Gr1). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2016. YEARLINGS CATALOGUED:

A first-crop son of juvenile champion, Derby and Champion Stakes hero New Approach (by Galileo), Dawn Approach swept through his first season undefeated in six races, including the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh and Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.
He kicked off his three-year-old season with a five-length victory in the Group 1 2000 Guineas and was then sent off favourite for the Derby at Epsom. Something was clearly amiss with him that day as he was beaten long before stamina could have been an issue, and he trailed home last of the 12 runners. Just 17 days later he reappeared at Royal Ascot where he gamely beat Toronado by a short-head in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes. That colt got his revenge with a half-length verdict in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes late the following month, and Dawn Approach appeared to be a shadow of his former self in two subsequent outings.
He is a full-brother to the Group 1-placed juvenile Group 2 scorer Herald The Dawn and a half-brother to Fainne (by Peintre Celebre), who is the dam of Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes winner and Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes third Sanus Per Aquam (by Teofilo).
His dam, Hymn of The Dawn (by Phone Trick), is a half-sister to the Grade 1-placed colt Galantas (by Tale of The Cat), and his third dam is a winning full-sister to US juvenile champion and prolific Grade 1 star Miss Oceana (by Alydar). Out of multiple Grade 2 scorer Kittiwake (by Sea Bird II), that star filly was a a half-sister to the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat scorer Kitwood (by Nureyev), who had some success as a sire, and also to two fillies of particular note. Ivory Wings (by Sir Ivor) won a listed contest in France, was third in the Group 1 Premio Lydia Tesio in Italy and fourth in the Group 1 Oaks in England, at a time when fourth counted for blacktype, and her descendants include Grade 1 Spinster Stakes heroine Aruna (by Mr Freeley), Grade 2 winners Surya (by Unbridled) and Hoop Of Colour (by Distorted Humor), and 2016 Grade 3 scorer Front Pocket Money (by Uncle Mo). Larida (by Northern Dancer), on the other hand, was a Grade 1-placed Grade 2 scorer on the track. In addition to giving us the Group 1 Coronation Stakes heroine Magic Of Life (by Seattle Slew), her descendants include the prolific South African Grade 1 star Inara (by Trippi), triple Grade 1 Canadian International Stakes winner Joshua Tree (by Montjeu), and several others who won at Group 3 or Group 2 level. The first three generations of the distaff side of his pedigree make him somewhat hard to gauge as a potentially successful stallion, and the picture painted by the fourth generation is that it is a strong racing family, albeit one lacking any notable stallions. He was a top-class racehorse, however, he is by a leading sire son of the mighty Galileo (by Sadler's Wells), he stands at Kildangan Stud, and, at the time of writing, some early appearing members of his first crop of 102 yearlings have been catching the eye in the ring. These are all attributes that offer encouragement. Despite his own precocity, many of his better juveniles may be summer and autumn winners, and it would appear likely that he will get milers and middle-distance horses in time. DAWN APPROACH (IRE) – ch.2010 – New Approach – Hymn Of The Dawn, 8 wins inc 2000 Guineas (Gr1), St James's Palace Stakes (Gr1), Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1), Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (Gr1), Coventry Stakes (Gr2), Rochestown Stakes (L), 2nd Sussex Stakes (Gr1). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2015.
