Imperial Monarch - Group 1-winning relation to Oscar

IMPERIAL MONARCH (IRE) - 2009 bay horse

This lightly-raced 12-furlong Group 1 scorer is out of a winning half-sister to the classic-placed leading National Hunt sire Oscar (by Sadler's Wells) so it was inevitable that he would not only find a home at a top National Hunt farm, but that he would also prove very popular with breeders in that sector. There are 161 known members of his first crop.

The Beeches Stud resident is a half-brother to Derby runner-up The Great Gatsby (by Sadler's Wells), to the Group 1-placed pair Roman Empress (by Sadler's Wells) and Magritte (by Sadler's Wells), and also to Mount Athos (by Montjeu), the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes and Group 3 Ormonde Stakes winner who finished third to Fiorente in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup in 2013.

In addition to prolific Grade 1 sire Oscar, Imperial Monarch's dam Ionian Sea (by Slip Anchor) is also a half-sister to Blue Stag (by Sadler's Wells), the listed scorer who chased home Quest For Fame in 1990's edition of the Derby at Epsom.

The Sadler's Wells line has had a profound influence on National Hunt racing and breeding, and although this representative of it will have foals and yearlings on offer at the jumps-oriented sales later in the year, and may have the occasional flat runner in the next few seasons, his best sales results are likely to begin at the various store horses auctions in 2018 and 2019.

After that we can expect to see bumper, point-to-point and hurdles winners for him, chasers following when his progeny are a bit older, and it seems likely that he will become a successful blacktype sire within National Hunt circles.
