The Group 1 Commonwealth Cup has been one of the best additions to the European racing programme in recent years and it got off to a tremendous start as its inaugural edition was won by Muhaarar.
Timeform-rated 111 as a juvenile, when he won the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes and finished third in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, the Charles Hills-trained son of Oasis Dream (by Green Desert) kicked off his three-year-old campaign with a narrow win in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes over seven furlongs but then finished out of the frame in the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas). The distaff side of his family, and the fact he is inbred 4x5 to Mill Reef (by Never Bend), suggested that the mile could be within his compass, but after this classic defeat the decision was taken to drop him back in trip. The Commonwealth Cup and enhanced early-season sprint programme, gives three-year-olds a chance to compete among themselves before being pitched in against the older horses, so the new race became an obvious starting point. He stormed home by three and three-quarter lengths from Limato, and, in addition to the runner-up, the also-rans included subsequent Group 1 stars Profitable and Jungle Cat. He went on to a short-head success in the Group 1 July Cup, he beat Esoterique by half a length to land the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, and then came home two lengths clear of Twilight Son in the Group 1 British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot. This Group 1 four-timer represented his only starts after his classic defeat, he was crowned sprint champion, earned a Timeform rating of 132, and went to Nunnery Stud as an exciting stallion prospect. His triple-digit first book yielded 95 foals.
The best of four blacktype horses for his dam, the half-brother to juvenile listed scorer Sajwah (by Exceed And Excel) is out of Tahrir (by Linamix), a dual seven-furlong winner who earned her blacktype when runner-up in a six-furlong listed contest.
The mare is a full-sister to pattern-placed multiple stakes winner Mister Charm and half-sister to Group 3 Prix de Guiche scorer and Group 2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein third ister Sacha (by Tiger Hill), hence her potential to produce a high-class miler. Grandam Miss Sacha (by Last Tycoon) was a stakes-winning sprinter, a half-sister to listed scorer Pinta (by Ahonoora), and out of Heaven High (by High Line), a half-sister to champion Timarida (by Kalaglow). That Irish filly won the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen and Grade 1 Beverly D Stakes, and she was third in the Group 1 Champion Stakes. Timarida is the dam of nine-and-a-half-furlong Group 3 scorer Timarwa (by Daylami), while her half-sister Timiya (by High Top) is responsible for dual Scandinavian champion Heavy Loaded (by Pips Pride), who was effective from six furlongs to a mile.
There is nothing in that distaff line to suggest any particular potential as a stallion – it has been an effective source of racehorses – but Muhaarar stands out as its best representative and also as its quickest. He is by one of the leading members of the Green Desert (by Danzig) sire line, and although some of the early Oasis Dream stallions have got stakes winners without making an impact, they do include rising star Showcasing (sire of Group 1 stars Advertise and Quiet Reflection) and several younger horses who are at early stages of their stud careers.
Muhaarar joined the team at Nunnery Stud just after their hugely influential Green Desert died, and he is one of the most brilliant representatives of that stallion’s line. A dozen of his first foals went through the ring last year and 10 of them were sold for a six-figured price, with a top one of 290,000gns. Clearly they are looking the part. There is an odd misconception among many that sprinter equals early-season juvenile precocity, even though many top sprinters don’t really hit their best until at least the summer of their three-year-old campaign or, in some cases, as four-year-olds. Muhaarar was a capable two-year-old and can be expected to get some smart summer and autumn juveniles, but his racing and pedigree profile suggest that his best results will come with his three-year-olds and older horses and that, like his sire, his top performers could come anywhere in the broad five to 12-furlong range. He has the potential to become the best stallion son of his sire. MUHAARAR (GB) - b.2012 - Oasis Dream - Tahrir, 7 wins inc July Cup (Gr1), British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr1), Prix Maurice de Gheest (Gr1), Commonwealth Cup (Gr1), Gimcrack Stakes (Gr2), Greenham Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Middle Park Stakes (Gr1), July Stakes (Gr2), Winkfield Stakes (Listed). Sire in England. First foals in 2017.

He was rated 114 by Timeform – as was his Group 1-placed, pattern winning dam Infallible (by Pivotal) – he was a lightly-raced winner of the Stewards’ Cup, and his best offspring are likely to be sprinters and milers. He is a half-brother to Group 3 Prix de Flore scorer Intimation (by Dubawi) and to multiple Group 1-placed, dual Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes winner Mutakayyef (by Sea The Stars), while his dam’s siblings include Penchant (by Kyllachy), who is the dam of Garswood (by Dutch Art) Group 1-winning sprinter and a blacktype sire with his first juveniles. Grandam Irresistible (by Cadeaux Genereux) won the Listed Kilvington Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 3 Brownstown Stakes, and that mare is a half-sister to several blacktype producers. Those talented relations include Group 3 Prix du Calvados winner and Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte runner-up Queen Bee (by Le Havre), dual pattern-placed stakes winner Eternally (by Dutch Art), and the colts Parliament Square (by Acclamation) and True Mason (by Mayson), both of whom have finished third in the Group 1 Prix Morny. If you go back another generation then you find that the fourth dam of Intrinsic is the standout US filly Some Romance (by Fappiano), a winner of both the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and Grade 1 Matron Stakes and whose blacktype placings included the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks, Grade 1 Monmouth Oaks, and Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes. The Green Desert branch of the mighty Danzig (by Northern Dancer) line is developing three splits of its own, and although the Invincible Spirit one looks strongest so far, the Oasis Dream one is showing promise.
A member of the Banstead Manor Stud team, the sprint star has 17 individual Group 1 winners to his name on the track – including recent new additions Polydream and Pretty Pollyanna – and his early stallion sons include the blacktype sires Aqlaam, Arcano, Power, and Approve. The last of those was a Group 2 scorer on the track, as was the standout horse among the Oasis Dream stallions to date: Showcasing. That Whitsbury Manor Stud resident is responsible for sprint ace Quiet Reflection and recent Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes winner Advertise. The younger Oasis Dream stallions include Bearstone Stud’s Fountain Of Youth who had 70 foals in his first crop.
He was an odds-on winner of a five-furlong Tipperary before finishing a three-quarter-length fourth to Extortionist in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes, earning a Timeform rating of 103p.
He was then off the track for 11 months, was well-beaten in a trio of blacktype events over seven furlongs and a mile, then dropped back to the minimum trip to take the Group 3 Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh, beating old rival Extortionist by a head. He finished that year on a Timeform rating of 111. Fountain Of Youth is a half-brother to Group 2-placed pattern winner Elarqam (by Frankel) and so is out of the dual champion and five-time Group 1 star Attraction (by Efisio). Her top-level wins came in the 1000 Guineas, Irish 1000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Matron Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes, and Timeform rated her 125. Attraction is a half-sister to Grade 3-placed Federation (by Motivator) and also to the dam of listed scorer Titi Makfi (by Makfi), and she is out of Flirtation (by Pursuit Of Love), an unraced half-sister to Group 2-placed middle-distance stakes winner Carmita (by Caerleon) and also to the dam of Group 3 Polar Cup scorer You Never Know (by Diaghlyphard). Juvenile seven-furlong Group 1 winner Lord Of Men (by Groom Dancer), Japanese champion and mile Group 1 heroine Major Emblem (by Daiwa Major), and several Argentine-bred Grade 1 winners appear under the branches of the fourth generation of the pedigree, while the fifth dam is July Cup heroine Lucasland (by Lucero), whose descendants also include Timeform 129-rated miler Sonic Lady (by Nureyev). Fountain Of Youth looks a likely type to get some early-season juveniles but then establish himself as a source of sprinters and milers of all age groups. FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH (IRE) - b.2011 - Oasis Dream - Attraction, 2 wins inc Sapphire Stakes (Gr3). Sire in England. First foals in 2017.

That might not sound like the sort of racing record that would secure a colt a place at a leading flat stud farm and that would bring him 142 mares in his first season, but this son of Oasis Dream (by Green Desert) is a half-brother to the undefeated Timeform 147-rated superstar Frankel (by Galileo) and that relationship is what has been his major selling point. His first foals made up to €46,000. Frankel, of course, was a leading freshman sire in 2016 and his first three-year-olds include a double-digit tally of pattern winners, headed by Japanese champion and classic heroine Soul Stirring. The Banstead Manor Stud celebrity has made an exciting start as a stallion. Their multiple Group 1-winning sibling Noble Mission (by Galileo), who stands at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, has his first yearlings now, and half-brother Bullet Train (by Sadler's Wells), who stands at Crestwood Farm in Kentucky, got a stakes winner among his first juveniles in 2016. None of this guarantees that Morpheus will hit the jackpot, of course, even though a growing number of sons of Oasis Dream are siring stakes winners, but he has received plenty of support, he is at a stud that has a well-established track record of turning non-stakes winning stallions into notably successful sires, and there is every reason to hope that he can be their next success story. Being inbred 3x3 to Danzig (by Northern Dancer) may increase his chance of getting sprinters and talented two-year-olds, although many of his better first-crop juvenile winners may come from the more precociously bred and raced mares, and those with a track record of producing two-year-old winners. It is possible, however, given his racing and pedigree profile, that his best long-term results will come with milers and even 10-furlong horses aged three and upwards, although, again with the right mares, he has prospects of getting some high-class sprinters too. He looks a likely candidate to get some stakes and pattern winners. MORPHEUS (GB) – b.2010 – Oasis Dream – Kind, 3 wins. Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2016. YEARLINGS CATALOGUED:

A growing number of the Oasis Dream (by Green Desert) stallions are siring stakes winners, which represents a promising start, and in 2016 they included Showcasing, sire of the dual Group 1-winning sprint star Quiet Reflection, and blacktype sires Approve, Aqlaam, Arcano, Captain Gerrard, and Power.
His younger sons include Gale Force Ten, who Timeform rated 115 at two and 118 at three. Coach House and Morpheus also have their first yearlings now. Gale Force Ten, an Irish National Stud stallion, covered 160 mares in his first season, so he will not be short of representatives. His first foals made up to €52,000. He was a £280,000 yearling, he won a six-furlong maiden in very soft ground at the Curragh in June of his two-year-old season, was runner-up to Reckless Abandon in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot shortly afterwards, and finished third behind that same rival in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. At three, he won the seven-furlong Listed Patton Stakes at Dundalk and the Group 3 Jersey Stakes on fast ground at Ascot, and he chased home Magician in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas. The best of his subsequent form were a sixth-place finish behind Lethal Force in the Group 1 July Cup and fourth behind Maxios in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.
Gale Force Ten is the first foal out of the Listed Warwickshire Oaks winner Ronaldsay (by Kirkwall) and that mare's siblings include Crackle (by Anshan), dam of the dual US Grade 3 scorer Pickle (by Piccolo). That filly, in turn, is the dam of the prolific listed sprint scorer Gusto (by Oasis Dream).
His grandam, Crackling (by Electric) won at three and four years of age but her two best siblings we best as juveniles. Bianca Nera (by Salse), Ireland's two-year-old filly champion of 1996, won the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and she is the grandam of the multiple Group 1 star Postponed (by Dubawi), of Grade 1-placed Grade 3 scorer Turning Top (by Pivotal), of Group 3 Winter Derby winner Robin Hoods Bay (by Motivator), and of this year's Listed Aphrodite Stakes heroine God Given (by Nathaniel). The other of Crackling's notable siblings is Hotelgenie Dot Com (by Selkirk), who is a little more closely related to Ronaldsay than is Bianca Nera. She was runner-up in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and third in the Group 1 Fillies' Mile, her classic-placed daughter Simply Perfect (by Danehill) took both the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes and Group 1 Fillies' Mile, and her grandson Bondi Beach (by Galileo) is a Group 1 St Leger-placed dual 14-furlong pattern scorer. Birch Creek (by Carwhite) is the third dam of Gale Force Ten, she earned her blacktype when finishing third in the Group 3 Premio Royal Mares, and her blacktype siblings include Great Deeds (by Forzando), a Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes winner who was runner-up in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes. Gale Force Ten's pedigree represents a mixture of speed and stamina, he was a classic-placed seven-furlong Group 3 scorer, he represents the Green Desert sire line, and he has been popular with breeders. The distance preferences of his offspring may depend on what their dams contribute, and although he can be expected to get some useful two-year-olds, his best results may come with his three-year-olds and older horses. GALE FORCE TEN (GB) – b.2011 – Oasis Dream – Ronaldsay, 3 wins inc Jersey Stakes (Gr3), Patton Stakes (L), 2nd Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr1), Norfolk Stakes (Gr2), 3rd Middle Park Stakes (Gr1). Showcasing, Arcano, Aqlaam, Captain Gerrard, Approve and Power have all sired blacktype winners. Having covered 108 mares in his first season at Bucklands Farms & Stud in Gloucestershire, there will be many who expect to see Coach House add his name to that list. His first foals made up to 38,000gns. He was trained by Aidan O'Brien, finished runner-up in a Curragh maiden in early April of his two-year-old season, then ran away with a similar contest on soft ground at Tipperary before taking the Listed Marble Hill Stakes on fast ground back at Ireland's headquarters. He then chased home No Nay Never in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, was a beaten odds-on favourite when only third to Sudirman in the Group 2 Railway Stakes nine days later, and was not seen out again. Coach House, whom Timeform rated 107, is a half-brother to current two-year-old Butterscotch (by Galileo), an Aidan O'Brien-trained filly who won her maiden by five lengths at the Curragh in late June and then chased home Clemmie in the Group 3 Grangecon Stud Stakes over the same course and distance just four days later. He is the first foal out of the six-furlong Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes winner Lesson In Humility (by Mujadil), a six-time scorer whose tally also included listed contests at Goodwood and Nottingham. She was beaten by just a neck when runner-up in another listed contest, by a head when runner-up to Serious Attitude in the Group 3 Summer Stakes at York, and her placings also included third in both the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Her half-sister Boastful (by Clodovil) won a mile listed contest at Goodwood and was placed in both the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes over six and in the Group 3 Fairy Bridge Stakes over seven and a half furlongs. Their three-year-old sibling is the Andrew Balding-trained Poet's Vanity (by Poet's Voice) who was fourth in the maiden won by Wuheida, then romped home by 10 lengths at Salisbury before taking the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes. She has run three times so far in 2017, finishing third to Daban in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, unplaced behind Winter in the 1000 Guineas and then fourth to Harry Angel in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes. Vanity (by Thatching), the grandam of Coach House, was placed a few times and the best of her siblings is Ffestiniog (by Efisio), the stakes-winning dam of the pattern-winning sprinter Eisteddfod (by Cadeaux Genereux), the Group 3-winning milers Border Patrol (by Selkirk) and Boston Lodge (by Grand Lodge), and also of the Grade 2-placed Brecon Beacon (by Spectrum). It looks a fair bet that some of Coach House's offspring will be speedy and precocious, and with his pedigree profile it is possible that he could get some talented sprinters and milers, at all ages. COACH HOUSE (IRE) – b.2011 – Oasis Dream – Lesson In Humility, 2 wins inc Marble Hill Stakes (L), 2nd Norfolk Stakes (Gr2), 3rd Railway Stakes (Gr2). Sire in England. First foals in 2016. He stands at Haras du Saz in France. A 240,000gns yearling, he is out of Wendylina (by In The Wings), who is an unraced half-sister to Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) heroine Caerlina (by Caerleon). She also won the Group 3 Prix de la Nonette, she was runner-up in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac, third in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas), she is the dam of the dual classic-placed filly La Nuit Rose (by Rainbow Quest), and grandam of the Group/Grade 2 scorers Tam Lin (by Selkirk) and Curren Mirotic (by Heart's Cry). Dinalina (by Top Ville), who also produced a listed scorer and several other blacktype earners, is out of Shahinaaz (by Venture), who won the Prix de l'Obelisque and was second in the Prix de Royallieu, and that made her a half-sister to Group 3 Doncaster Cup scorer Karadar (by Rheingold) and to Group 3 Princess Royal Stakes winner Karamita (by Shantung), dam of the dual Group 1 star Kartajana (by Shernazar). There are many other talented horses in the family, although they are but distantly related to Sri Putra, a stallion who looks likely to get milers and middle-distance horses, and with the right mares, potentially some useful juveniles. SRI PUTRA (GB) – b.2006 – Oasis Dream – Wendylina, 7 wins inc York Stakes (Gr2), Prix Guillaume d'Ornano (Gr2), Earl of Sefton Stakes (Gr3), Solario Stakes (Gr3), Paradise Stakes (L), 2nd Coral-Eclipse Stakes (Gr1), International Bosphorus Trophy (Gr2), Glorious Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr1), Coral-Eclipse Stakes (Gr1). He made €500,000 as a yearling and he comes from a prolific blacktype family often noted for its speed. He later finished third in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, beaten just a length behind the winner Crusade. At three he finished third to Power in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas, and at four he was a neck runner-up to Hitchens in the Group 3 Greenlands Stakes before taking a seven-furlong listed contest at Naas. Reply's half-brother Indian Days (by Daylami) got middle-distance stamina from his sire rather than showing the family's pace, he won the Group 3 John Porter Stakes and two editions of the Group 2 International Bosphorus Trophy, and he took up stallion duties in Turkey. Their other notable sibling, the ill-fated Biniou (by Mozart), was the son of a sprint champion and he got his listed race wins and several pattern placings over five and six furlongs. Cap Coz (by Indian Ridge), who is the dam of Reply, made a winning debut over five and a half furlongs at Chantilly in May of her two-year-old season, won a seven-furlong listed contest just under two months later, and she was twice Group 3 placed over that same trip. The first was her half-length defeat by Lady Vettori in the Group 3 Prix du Calvados at Deauville and the second, the following summer, was a half-length defeat by Josr Algarhoud in the Group 3 Prix de la Porte Maillot at Longchamp. Pont-Aven (by Try My Best), the grandam of Reply, chased home Houseproud in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) but won the Group 3 Prix de Saint-Georges over five furlongs and was beaten by a nose by Lugana Beach in the Group 3 Prix du Petit Couvert. Her star daughter was the dual Group 2 Prix du Gros-Chene heroine Sainte Marine (by Kenmare), who also won the Group 3 Prix de Saint-Georges and a five-furlong listed contest and was twice runner-up in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes. In 1998 she chased home one-length winner Lochangel, before taking third to My Best Valentine in the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp, and in 1999 it was Stravinsky who beat her at York. Pont-Aven's top son was Josr Algarhoud, one of the fastest horses by middle-distance star and influence Darshaan (by Shirley Heights). The lightly-raced colt won the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes, Group 3 Beeswing Stakes and Group 3 Prix de la Porte Maillot, he chased home Cape Cross in the Group 2 Celebration Mile, and was third in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes, although he achieved only moderate success at stud. The mare was also responsible for the pattern-placed stakes winner Traou Mad (by Barathea), whose stakes-placed daughter Roscoff (by Daylami) has done her part for the family by producing the Group 2 Gran Criterium and Group 3 Premio Parioli scorer Hero Look (by Lope De Vega). Albacora (by Fairy King), a half-sister to Pont-Aven, got her blacktype success over seven and a half furlongs and later became the dam of the Listed Cheshire Oaks winner Hammiya (by Darshaan). That filly, in turn, if the dam of the 10-furlong German listed scorer Shaquira (by Redoute's Choice) and of the stakes-placed miler Adhwaa (by Oasis Dream). The fourth dam of Reply is leading Canadian juvenile Gay Apparel (by Up Spirits), a mare from whom a variety of stakes and pattern winners descend, including the recent Goodwood Group 3 scorer Al Jazi (by Canford Cliffs), although their relationship to this young stallion is remote. Reply stands for just €2,000 at Haras d'Ayguemorte in France. Many of his progeny are likely to race in that country, and with his pedigree and racing credentials it is entirely possible that he could get some smart handicappers or even blacktype horses in the sprinters or milers division. REPLY (IRE) – b.2009 – Oasis Dream – Cap Coz, 3 winc inc Owenstown Stud Stakes (L), 2nd Greenlands Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr1), Middle Park Stakes (Gr1). Sire in France.
