Sadler’s Wells (by Northern Dancer) has had a phenomenal effect on both the flat and National Hunt racing and breeding sectors and his brilliant son and prolific champion sire Galileo appears to be following suit.
He already has a double-digit tally of sons who have at least one top-level flat winner somewhere in the world and a growing number of sons who are making an impact or being aimed at the National Hunt market. Timeform 127-rated Telescope is among the latter.
The Shade Oak Stud stallion was a top-class middle-distance horse, his dam, Velouette (by Darshaan), is an unraced half-sister to Group 1 Dubai World Cup star Moon Ballad (by Singspiel), and his grandam is Velvet Moon (by Shaadi), a Group 2 Lowther Stakes-winning half-sister to Group 1 Derby Italiano winner and Group 1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Central Park.
That horse’s full-sister Mellow Park won the Group 3 Lancashire Oaks, and their dam’s siblings included Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes winner Gouriev (by Gorytus) and dual Irish Group 3 scorer Careafolie (by Caerleon). It seems unlikely that Telescope will have many, if any, runners on the flat, so it may be some time before we begin to see what his offspring can do. He has the potential to become a leading British-based National Hunt sire. His initial book yielded 90 foals. TELESCOPE (IRE) - b.2010 - Galileo - Velouette, 5 wins inc Hardwicke Stakes (Gr2), Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr2), Aston Park Stakes (L), 2nd King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr1), Jockey Club Stakes (Gr2), Rose of Lancaster Stakes (Gr3), Gordon Richards Stakes (Gr3), Huxley Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr1). There are no guarantees in life, but it will be quite a shock if Coolmore Stud’s Gleneagles fails to become a sire of Group 1 winners. It remains to be seen whether or not they will significant horses among a long list of stakes and pattern winners, or just the occasional ones dotted throughout his career, but as a top-class son of Galileo (by Sadler’s Wells) who is out of a ‘blue hen’ full-sister to multiple US champion sire Giant’s Causeway (by Storm Cat), one could justifiably ask ‘how could he fail?’
Gleneagles never ran over less than seven furlongs, and his maiden success came on his second attempt, but then he swept the Group 3 Tyros Stakes, Group 2 Futurity Stakes and Group 1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes before passing the post a half-length and short-neck in front of Full Mast and Territories in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp only to lose the race in the stewards’ room. He beat Territories again, this time by two and a quarter lengths, when making his seasonal debut in the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket the following May, added the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh, and then justified odds-on again with a two-and-a-half-length score in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. With a clear preference for fast ground, he bypassed several potential targets but took his chance on good-to-soft at Ascot in mid-October as a prep for a shot at the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland. Sadly, neither worked out. He was a three-length sixth in the former and then trailed home in rear behind American Pharoah, neither performance any reflection on his ability.
Gleneagles was Timeform-rated 113 at two and 128 at three. On offical ratings, he was a champion at two and also Europe’s champion three-year-old miler.
His dam, You’resothrilling – whom Timeform rated 117 following her Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes victory at two – has made a dream start to her broodmare career with five significant runners from her first five foals – all of them by Galileo. Gleneagles is her second born, and his older sister Marvellous won the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Number three is Group 3 C L & M F Weld Park Stakes winner and Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes third Coolmore, number four is Group 2 Sandown Classic winner and Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes runner-up Taj Mahal, and her fifth foal is Happily. Timeform-rated 116 last year, she won the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh before avenging her brother’s loss in France with victory against the colts in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. She also won the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 2 Debutante Stakes. Happily is without a win so far in 2018 but was third to Billesdon Brook in the Group 1 1000 Guineas, third to Alpha Centauri in the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas, and only beaten a total of half a length when fourth to Laurens in the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) in June. In addition to being a pattern-winning full-sister to the famously tough multiple Group 1 star and influential stallion Giant’s Causeway, You’resothrilling is also a full-sister to Group 2-placed sprinter and leading New York-based sire Freud, and there is every reason to hope that Decorated Knight (by Galileo), the triple Group 1-winning son of her sister Pearling, will become a Group 1 sire from his Irish National Stud base. The offspring of Grade 1-placed multiple Grade 2 winner Mariah’s Storm (by Rahy) also include Love Me Only (by Sadler’s Wells), the dam of dual Derby-placed Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes scorer Storm The Stars (by Sea The Stars), while the third dam of Gleneagles is the Grade 3 winner Immense (by Roberto). For a horse like Gleneagles it seems not a question of whether or not he will sire Group 1 winners but, instead, a matter of how many he of them he will get. He is the most exciting stallion to go to stud in Europe since Sea The Stars and Frankel. GLENEAGLES (IRE) - b.2012 - Galileo - You’resothrilling, 7 wins inc 2000 Guineas (Gr1), Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr1), St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr1), Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (Gr1), Futurity Stakes (Gr2), Tyros Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere Grand Criterium (Gr1). Sadler’s Wells (by Northern Dancer) had a profound influence on the breed, both in the global flat sector and in the National Hunt division, and one of the first things to catch the eye with regard to Gatewood’s pedigree is that he is inbred 2x3 to the great white-faced bay.
The son of prolific champion sire Galileo (by Sadler’s Wells) is out of Group 3 Golden Daffodil Stakes winner Felicity (by Selkirk) and his grandam is Group 1 Oaks d’Italia third Las Flores (by Sadler’s Wells). He was a 116 Timeform-rated middle-distance horse, his dam is a half-sister to seven-furlong Group 2 winner and blacktype sire Sleeping Indian (by Indian Ridge) and full-sister to middle-distance Group 2 scorer and young Anngrove Stud stallion Aiken (by Selkirk), and his grandam is also a half-sister to two horses of note.
Dancing Goddess (by Nijinsky) won a listed sprint in Ireland, chased home Trusted Partner in the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas, and became the grandam of the classic-placed multiple Japanese Group 2 scorer Air Eminem (by Danehill) – the sire of blacktype-winning French hurdler Hurkhan.
Bach (by Caerleon), on the other hand, won the Group 2 Royal Whip Stakes and four listed contests, he chased home Rebelline in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and Suances in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat, and finished third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, and Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes before going on to a somewhat successful career as a National Hunt stallion. All of this makes Windmill View Stud stallion Gatewood an interesting prospect, and although there are only 19 members of his first crop, it would be no surprise to see some of them prove quite smart in point-to-points, over hurdles, and over fences. He is bred on the popular Galileo – Danehill (by Danzig) cross, stands at Haras de Colleville, and has 30 registered members of his first crop. He is out of Group 3 Prix Perth winner and Group 2 Prix d’Astarte runner-up Danzigaway, which makes him a half-brother to Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile third, dual US Grade 2 scorer, and successful blacktype sire Silent Name (by Sunday Silence). Their unraced half-sister Zigarra (by Halling) is the dam of the pattern-placed triple listed scorer Battalion (by Authorized), whereas their dam’s siblings feature Gold Away (by Goldneyev). He got his best win in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet, he was placed in each of the Prix Jean Prat, Prix Maurice de Gheest, Prix d’Ispahan, and two editions of the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp – all Group 1 – and the standout among his offspring – by a long way – is the multiple Group 1 star Alexander Goldrun. Danzigaway’s siblings also include Group 3 Prix du Calvados winner Blushing Gleam (by Caerleon) and a mare called Lishaway (by Polish Precedent) – the dam of Group 3 Solario Stakes scorer Foss Way (by Desert Prince). Galiway’s grandam is, therefore, the stakes-placed Blushing Away (by Blushing Groom), his third dam is the Grade 1-placed, Grade 2 Alcibiades Stakes heroine Sweet Revenge (by Raja Baba), and both his fourth and fifth dams – Away (by Blue Prince) and Golly (by Alorter) – were also stakes winners. He may get some two-year-old winners in the second half of the season, and his offspring look likely to prove best in the broad seven to 14-furlong range, with some of them potentially staying a bit farther. The presence or absence of successful sires in the family is one of the things that we look for when trying to assess the potential of any young stallion, and in the case of Noble Mission, this is a test that he passes with flying colours. The triple Group 1 star is the year-younger full-brother to Frankel.
That Timeform 147-rated great has already come up with 10 pattern winners from his first crop, which is a very promising start, and although the tally includes the Japanese champion and classic heroine Soul Stirring, it does not include the dual Derby-placed colt Cracksman. The support that Frankel received made it odds-on that he would get a long list of stakes winners from his first crop, and it is to be hoped that his first European Group 1 stars will be crowned soon.
His full-brother 'only' won three times at the highest level and although that Timeform 128-rated bay stands at the famous Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, it would not be fair to expect him to come up with similar first-crop results.
There is, however, every reason to hope that Noble Mission, like a growing number of son of prolific champion sire Galileo (by Sadler's Wells), will become a source of stakes winners, at all levels, and it will be fascinating to see how his career turns out, especially as he is a middle-distance turf horse standing in the USA. He covered 146 mares in his first season, he will have some runners in Europe and it seems likely that his two-year-old winners here will come over seven furlongs and farther, with his three-year-olds and older horses needing at least a mile. NOBLE MISSION (GB) - b.2009 - Galileo - Kind, 9 wins inc Champion Stakes (Gr1), Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr1), Huxley Stakes (Gr3), Gordon Richards Stakes (Gr3), Gordon Stakes (Gr3), Newmarket Stakes (L), Tapster Stakes (L), 2nd Grosser Dallmayr Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (Gr1), King Edward VII Stakes (Gr2), St Simon Stakes (Gr3), John Porter Stakes (Gr3), Fairway Stakes (L), 3rd Rose of Lancaster Stakes (Gr3), John Porter Stakes (Gr3). Sun Central is a dual stakes-winning half-brother to the Group 1 stars George Washington (by Danehill) and Grandera (by Grand Lodge), he stands at Elusive Bloodstock in Lincolnshire, and covered 22 mares in his first season. His stakes-placed dam, Bordighera (by Alysheba), is out of the Group 3 Prix Penelope winner Blue Tip (by Tip Moss), who was placed in both the Group 2 Prix de l'Opera and Grade 2 E P Taylor Stakes. SUN CENTRAL (IRE) – ch.2009 – Galileo – Bordighera, 5 wins inc Silver Cup (L), Golden Square Centre Chester Handicap (L). Sire in England. First foals in 2016.
There are several things that make Ruler Of The World one of the most intriguing stallions whose first yearlings are on offer in 2017.
He was unraced at two, won the Group 1 Derby at Epsom on his third start, then failed to win again until six starts later when he beat Flintshire by a length and a half in the Group 2 Prix Foy at Longchamp. Then he was unplaced in two more starts. He won the Group 3 Chester Vase before Epsom, he was third in the Group 1 Champion Stakes on his final start at three, and he earned over £1 million in prize money. The chestnut retired on an official handicap mark of 119, which is strikingly low for a Derby hero, and that was down from a career peak of 122. But Timeform had a different view, rating him 128 at three and 126 at four. His low official rating, disappointing strike-rate on the track, and the initial disappointment at stud of his top-class half-brother Duke Of Marmalade are likely contributing factors to his initial fee of just €15,000, a figure that dropped to €10,000 in 2016, and to just €8,000 in 2017. He covered 80 mares in his first season at Coolmore Stud and it was that year in which his sibling had a breakthrough season. Star Of Seville, Nutan and Simple Verse all became Group 1 classic stars for Duke Of Marmalade who, by that point was already at Drakenstein Stud in South Africa, and since then he has added Group 1 Premio Lydia Tesio scorer Sound Of Freedom and Group 1 Gold Cup hero Big Orange. Ruler Of The World's first foals made up to €96,000. Given how many Galileo stallions have already sired at least one top-level winner somewhere in the world, that his half-brother has made such good progress as a sire, and the female family from which he comes, his current fee is eye-catching and could represent tremendous value.
Love Me True (by Kingmambo), the pattern-placed dam of Duke Of Marmalade and Ruler Of The World, is a half-sister to the Grade 1-placed Grade 2 scorer Bite The Bullet (by Spectacular Bid), and her dam, listed-placed Lassie's Lady (by Alydar), was out of Lassie Dear (by Buckpasser).
That Grade 3 scorer is the dam of Group 1 Sprint Cup and Group 1 Prix de la Foret winner Wolfhound (by Nureyev), of pattern-placed stakes-winner Foxhound (by Danzig), of Group 1-placed Al Mufti (by Roberto) and of a son named Deerhound (by Danzig). Each of them sired at least one top-level winner at stud, with Al Mufti being a top sire in South Africa. Her daughters are headed by the Grade 1-placed Grade 3 scorer Weekend Surprise (by Secretariat) and she, of course, gave us the US classic stars and classic sires Summer Squall (by Storm Bird) and A.P. Indy (by Seattle Slew), the latter champion sire and founder of a dynasty in the USA. Lassie Dear is also the grandam of the prolific Grade 1 star and leading US sire Lemon Drop Kid (by Kingmambo). These are the highlights of the first three generations of the family, and as Ruler Of The World is a Derby-winning Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) horse from one would imagine that the odds of him siring at least one Group 1 winner must be a short price. The early Galileo stallions include the classic sires Teofilo, New Approach and Frankel, and each of Cima De Triomphe, Heliostatic, Rip Van Winkle, Roderic O'Connor, Sixties Icon and Soldier Of Fortune have sired at least one winner at the highest level in a Category I country. Ruler Of The World does not look a likely candidate to get many two-year-old winners, although some may be blacktype earners at that age, and it may be that, like his half-brother, the best of his progeny are middle-distance horses and stayers. RULER OF THE WORLD (IRE) – ch.2010 – Galileo – Love Me True, 4 wins inc Derby (Gr1), Prix Foy (Gr2), Chester Vase (Gr3), 2nd Prix Niel (Gr2), 3rd Champion Stakes (Gr1). Sire in Ireland. He covered 51 mares in his first season, only two of his first foals were offered at auction and one of them made €3,400 in Goffs.
He was a listed race winner in Ireland, a dual pattern scorer in England, but out of luck in a period of just over a year spent racing in Australia – a close fifth to Dunaden in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup was his best performance there. The first foal out of juvenile winner Play Misty For Me (by Danehill Dancer), he is out of a half-sister to two blacktype earners and his grandam, Miss Champagne (by Bering), is an unraced full-sister to the Group 3 Prix Eclipse scorer Stella Berine. That talented filly is the grandam of the seven-furlong Australian Group 2 winner Cradle Me (by Easy Rocking). His third dam, Beaujolaise (by Thatching), also won the Group 3 Prix Eclipse, she was out of the Listed Prix du Bois scorer Benthose (by Dapper Dan), and the other blacktype winners who descend from that older mare include the speedy mother and daughter pair Comete (by Jeune Homme) and Chica Loca (by American Post). QUEST FOR PEACE (IRE) - b.2008 - Galileo - Play Misty For Me, 5 wins inc Cumberland Lodge Stakes (Gr3), Coutts Glorious Stakes (Gr3), March Stakes (L), Lenebane Stakes (L), 2nd Jockey Club Stakes (Gr2). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2016.
Magician stands at Coolmore's US farm, Ashford Stud, but he had several of his first foals offered in Europe last year and he will have yearlings at some of the European auctions.
Winner of just one of his four starts as a juvenile, which was a mile maiden in heavy ground at the Curragh in October, the Aidan O'Brien-trained colt improved considerably over the winter, made a winning reappearance in the Group 3 Dee Stakes at Chester, followed that with a three and a half length defeat of Gale Force Ten in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas, and rounded off his season with a half-length win over The Fugue in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita. He won just once from six starts as a four-year-old, narrowly beating Parish Hall in the Group 3 Mooresbridge Stakes over 10 furlongs at the Curragh, but was runner-up to Noble Mission in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, to The Fugue in the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes, and to Hardest Core in the Grade 1 Arlington Million.
The son of Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) is out of the listed sprint winner Absolutelyfabulous (by Mozart), which makes him a full-brother to the Grade 1-placed stakes winner Outstandingly, and his grandam, Lady Windermere (by Lake Coniston) is out of the one-time scorer Brigid (by Irish River).
A full-sister to Or Vision, who is the stakes-winning dam of the Group/Grade 1 scorers Dolphin Street (by Bluebird), Insight (by Sadler's Wells) and Saffron Walden (by Sadler's Wells), Brigid is the dam of the Group 1 stars Listen (by Sadler's Wells) and Sequoyah (by Sadler's Wells). The former is the dam of the Group 1-placed Japanese Group 2 winner Touching Speech (by Deep Impact), and Sequoyah's brightest star is the classic-winning miler and Coolmore stallion Henrythenavigator (by Kingmambo). His early Group/Grade 1-winning sons George Vancouver and Pedro The Great are off the mark as freshman sires in France, with the latter already responsible for his first stakes winner. Sequoyah is also the dam of Queen Cleopatra (by Kingmambo), who won the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial Stakes and was placed in both the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas and Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) before going on to become a successful broodmare. That filly then became the dam of the Australian dual Group 3 scorer Francis Of Assisi (by Danehill Dancer), her pattern-placed stakes-winning daughter Look At Me (by Danehill Dancer) is the dam of juvenile listed scorer Kind Of Magic (by Galileo), and Queen Cleopatra is also the grandam of this year's Group 1 Derby runner-up Cliffs Of Moher (by Galileo). There are many other stakes and pattern winners to be found in the various branches of this family, including the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes scorer Beethoven (by Oratorio), but they do not tell us anything more about Magician's potential as a stallion. He is a well-bred, classic-winning son of Galileo and there is no reason why he should not be capable of siring stakes and pattern winners. MAGICIAN (IRE) – b.2010 – Galileo – Absolutelyfabulous, 5 wins inc Breeders' Cup Turf (Gr1), Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr1), Mooresbridge Stakes (Gr3), Dee Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Arlington Million (Gr1), Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr1), Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr1). Sire in USA. First foals in 2016.

This Group 1-winning son of Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) spent one season under the Coolmore banner, covering just 39 mares, and then he moved to Drakenstein Stud in South Africa. The long list of Galileo stallions with at least one top-level winner to their name includes Rip Van Winkle and that horse's fourth dam, House Tie (by Be Friendly), is the third dam of Kingsbarns.
He is a half-brother to the pattern winning fillies Belle Artiste (by Namid) and Sweeter Still (by Rock of Gibraltar), his dam, Beltisaal (by El Gran Senor) is a half-sister to the Group 2-placed stakes winner Kafhar (by In The Wings), and his grandam, Ittisaal (by Caerleon), is a half-sister to two mares of particular note.
Twine (by Thatching) gave us the Group 1-placed Group 2 scorer, Grade 1 Champion Hurdle hero and successful National Hunt sire Alderbrook (by Ardross), she is also responsible for the blacktype winners Restructure (by Danehill), Royal Strand (by Royal Academy) and Native Twine (by Be My Native), she is the grandam of the Group 3 scorer Tahreeb (by Indian Ridge) and third dam of this year's Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap winner Madam Dancealot (by Sir Prancealot).
Tea House (by Sassafras), on the other hand, was a listed-race winner and, in addition to being the dam of the US Grade 1 scorer Danish (by Danehill) and of the multiple Group 1-placed pattern winners Ace (by Danehill) and Hawkeye (by Danehill), her descendants include the Group 1 Dubai World Cup star African Story (by Pivotal). The aforementioned Rip Van Winkle connection comes through Jamaican Punch (by Shareef Dancer), an unraced half-sister to Tea House, Twine and Ittisaal. Her winning daughter Mustique Dream (by Don't Forget Me) is the dam of Looking Back (by Stravinsky), and that filly became the stakes-placed dam of the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes, Group 1 Sussex Stakes and Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes hero. KINGSBARNS (IRE) – b.2010 – Galileo – Beltisaal, 2 wins inc Racing Post Trophy (Gr1), 2nd Royal Whip Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr1), Heritage Stakes (L). Sire in Ireland & South Africa. First foals in 2016.
