Freedom Child's career-best effort was a 13 and a quarter-length victory, on a sloppy track, in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes over nine furlongs at Belmont Park. He is by the sire of Kentucky Derby hero Orb, he stands at Country Life Farm in Maryland, covered 81 mares in his first season and 52 in his second. Also eye-catching is that he is related to one of this year's most popular first-crop sires of yearlings.

A $350,000 Fasig-Tipton graduate, he is the best of several winners out of one-time scorer Bandstand (by Deputy Minister), a half-sister to the stakes winners Foolishly (by Broad Brush) and Weather Warning (by Storm Cat), the latter a Manitoba Derby winner and blacktype sire in Canada.
 
Their dam, City Band (by Carson City), won the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes as a juvenile, was multiple graded-placed at three and a stakes winner at four. Wedding Band (by Mighty Appealing), the third dam of Freedom Child, had a listed race success among five wins from 24 starts, and her non-winning daughter Steel Band (by Carson City) is another notable member of the family. That is because her stakes-winning daughter Steelin' (by Orientate) is the dam of Grade 1 star, juvenile champion and Ashford Stud stallion Shanghai Bobby (by Harlan's Holiday), whose first yearlings have made up to $575,000 so far this year.

A $185,000 yearling who became a $675,000 breeze-up colt, Corfu made a winning debut over five furlongs at Saratoga in late July of his two-year-old season, added the Group 2 Saratoga Special Stakes over six and a half furlongs at Saratoga, and was also Grade 2-placed at Belmont. A leading turf juvenile who won the classic trial Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at three, Soldat is a son of the hugely popular War Front (by Danzig), a stallion who has a leading profile in both the USA and Europe. This could make him a candidate to get some talented horses on both continents.

He stands at Woodford Thoroughbreds in Florida, he covered 124 mares in his first season and 112 in his second. His earliest sales yearlings met with mixed response, but there was a $155,000 Ocala filly among them.

Soldat is out of Le Relais (by Coronado's Quest), who is an unraced half-sister to Canadian Grade 3 scorer Mulrainy, and her dam Malbay (by Apalachee) was a talented juvenile in that country. The Grade 2 American Derby winner Pine Dance (by Pine Bluff) appears under a branch of the fourth generation of the pedigree, but there is nothing to give us an indication of Soldat's sire potential.

Juvenile champion Shanghai Bobby (by Harlan's Holiday) is by the sire of successful stallions Into Mischief and Majesticperfection, both of whom were also Grade 1 winners. He stands at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, and he is one of the most popular horses who have their first yearlings on offer, having covered 160 mares in his first season, 202 in his second, and having early sales horses who include a string of six-figured lots.

He is out of the stakes-winner Steelin' (by Orientate), his grandam Steel Band (by Carson City) is a full-sister to the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes winner City Band, whose descendants include Grade 1 Peter Pan Stakes winner Freedom Child (by Malibu Moon), a Maryland-based stallion whose first yearlings are on offer now, just one of whom is catalogued for the big Keeneland sale.

There are plenty of other stakes winners to be found further back in the pedigree, although nothing as talented as Shanghai Bobby. It seems likely that most of his progeny will be dirt horses, and the Storm Cat (by Storm Bird) sire line is not often represented in Europe, but it would be interesting to see how any British or Irish runners for him might get on.

Small crops for the Calumet Farm stallion – he covered 25 mares in his first season and 45 in his second – but as a son of the dynasty-making stallion A.P. Indy (by Seattle Slew) and out of the prolific Grade 1 star Sightseek (by Distant View), he certainly has the pedigree to spring a few surprises.

His dam won seven times at the highest level, her half-sister Tates Creek (by Rahy) won both the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes and Grade 1 Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap), and their sibling Quest To Peak (by Distant View) is the dam of one of the luckiest fillies of the modern era.

Special Duty (by Hennessy) won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes as a two-year-old and was crowned champion of her sex that year. Her record shows that she completed a classic double at three, taking both the Group 1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) at Longchamp, but she was actually pipped by Jacqueline Quest in the former and by Liliside in the latter, and got both races in the stewards' room.

Nijinsky Star (by Nijinsky), the unraced third dam of Raison d'Etat, was a half-sister to Six Crowns (by Secretariat), the Grade 1-placed stakes-winning dam of champion and notable sire Chief's Crown (by Danzig), her own descendants include Group 1 Prix de la Foret heroine Etoile Montante (by Miswaki) and Grade 2 winner Pollard's Vision (by Carson City), who is the sire of multiple Grade 1 star Blind Luck, and her dam was the champion and multiple Grade 1 heroine Chris Evert (by Swoon's Son).
