This grandson of Green Desert (by Danzig) stands at Haras du Hoguenet, in France, and he was one of the most precocious and talented juveniles in that country in 2012. He made his debut over four and a half furlongs at Saint-Cloud in late March, winning by six lengths, and then followed-up with a 12-length score over five furlongs at Chantilly a month later.
He completed a hat-trick with victory in the Listed Prix La Fleche at Maisons-Laffitte in early June and when he was then fourth in the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin and unplaced in the Group 1 Prix Morny, both of which were won by Reckless Abandon, one could have been forgiven for writing him off as just another early-season juvenile that failed to progress. But he was not done yet. The colt ran twice more that year, taking the Group 3 Prix Eclipse over six furlongs in very soft ground at Chantilly and then beating Viztoria by a length to add the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte over the same trip on heavy ground in early November. Penny's Picnic ran just twice as a three-year-old, taking third behind Style Vendome in the Group 3 Prix Djebel and then finishing last behind that same rival in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas).
He is out of Zerky (by Kingmambo), who was placed over a mile in England as a two-year-old, a distance over which her full-sister Penny's Gold excelled. Winner of the Group 3 Prix Quincey and Listed Prix de la Calonne and beaten just head by Zarkiya in the Group 3 Prix de Sandringham when trained in France, that filly went on to add the Grade 3 Ballston Spa Breeders' Cup Handicap over a half-furlong farther at Saratoga. She was also Grade 2-placed over nine furlongs, although beaten by a total of eight lengths on that occasion.
Their dam, Penny's Valentine (by Storm Cat), was third in the Group 2 Premio Regina Elena (Italian 1000 Guineas) and she is also notable as being the grandam of the Group 1-winning Japanese miler Curren Black Hill (by Daiwa Major). Her half-brother Northern Park (by Northern Dancer) and half-sister Mrs Jenney (by The Minstrel) were listed race winners and the latter not only became the dam of Grade 1 star and successful sire Unaccounted For (by Private Account), but she is the third dam of last year's Grade 1 Humana Distaff Stakes winner Dame Dorothy (by Bernardini) and of Mrs Lindsay (by Theatrical), who won the Group 1 Prix Vermeille and Grade 1 E P Taylor Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks). The third dam of Penny's Picnic is, therefore, the dual English champion Mrs Penny (by Great Nephew), winner of the Group 1 Prix de Diane, Group 1 Prix Vermeille, Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes , Group 3 Lowther Stakes and Group 3 Cherry Hinton Stakes, runner-up to Ela-Mana-Mou in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and third in both the 1000 Guineas and Irish 1000 Guineas. Her siblings included the dual pattern-placed Cadeaux d'Amie (by Lyphard), who went on to make an impact at stud. That mare's best son was the Grade 1 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile Stakes winner Irish Prize (by Irish River) and her best daughter the Group 1 Champion Stakes, Grade 1 Beverly D Stakes and Group 1 1000 Guineas heroine Hatoof (by Irish River). That champion also won the Group 2 Prix de l'Opera, Group 2 Prix d'Astarte, Grade 2 E P Taylor Stakes and two Group 3 contests, and the races in which she was placed included the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf, Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac. She disappointed as a broodmare, but her stakes-winning half-sister Insijaam (by Secretariat) is the dam of Group 3 Royal Whip Stakes winner Maputo (by Cape Cross) and his Oaks-placed Group 3 Select Stakes-winning half-sister Pictavia (by Sinndar). Set In Motion (by Mr Prospector), who won just once, is the dam of Group 3 scorer Divine Task (by Irish River), and Moonlight Sail (by Irish River), who also won once, is the grandam of the tragically ill-fated Group 1 Irish Derby hero Trading Leather (by Teofilo). Penny's Picnic is inbred 3x3 to Mr Prospector (by Raise A Native), he represents the Green Desert sire line and he is both the fastest and most precocious member of a famous classic family, all of which makes him an interesting prospect. It will be a surprise if he does not get some speedy juveniles, and there is every reason to hope that he could also get some talented performers at up to a mile. PENNY'S PICNIC (IRE) – b.2010 – Kheleyf – Zerky, 5 wins inc Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte (Gr2), Prix Eclipse (Gr3), Prix La Fleche (L), 3rd Prix Djebel (Gr3). Sire in France. First foals in 2015.
