With so many top horses representing just a small handful of sire lines and varying crossed between those major lines, it would be great is something a bit different could emerge as a force. The odds are heavily stacked against Dunaden being the one as he is the one hit for his unfashionably-bred sire and the only other blacktype horse within the first three generations of his family is a chaser.
There is, however, no doubt that Dunaden was a top-class racehorse. Timeform rated him 130 at his peak and he was an epitome of the modern competitor. A top-notch middle-distance horse who had the stamina to take the Group 1 Melbourne Cup over two miles, he also won the Group 1 Caulfield Cup and the Grade 1 Hong Kong Vase. He was a multiple Group 1-placed pattern scorer in France, placed in the Group 1 Coronation Cup, Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes and Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes in England, and his 10 wins and 19 placings from 46 starts netted him £5,271,584, one of the highest amounts ever accumulated by a European horse.
The only stakes winner for the Group 2-winning miler Nicobar (by Indian Ridge), Dunaden has three winning siblings but none of his first four dams made it to the racetrack. They are La Marlia (by Kaldounevees), La Rotunda (by Romildo), Sugarberry (by Comrade In Arms), and Maple Sugar (by Northern Treat).
Dunaden is, therefore, an unknown prospect. He stands at Overbury Stud in Gloucestershire, he covered 99 mares in his first season, and there is no doubt that this good-looking and top-class performer has thoroughly earned his chance at stud. His first foals made up to 20,000gns. His first win came in May of his three-year-old season, his first blacktype success in November of his four-year-old campaign, he was outstanding at five and six years of age, and merely very good at the age of seven. He looks unlikely to get many winning juveniles, although there will probably be a few in his first crop. He has also been covering National Hunt mares and it may be that it is in that sector that he makes the greater impact. It will be fascinating to see how his career turns out. DUNADEN (FR) – b.2006 – Nicobar – La Marlia, 10 wins inc Caulfield Cup (Gr1), Melbourne Cup (Gr1), Hong Kong Vase (Gr1), Geelong Cup (Gr3), Prix de Barbeville (Gr3), Prix du Grand Camp (L), 2nd Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr1), Coronation Cup (Gr1), Hardwicke Stakes (Gr2), Prix Vicomtesse Vigier (Gr2), 3rd Prix Ganay (Gr1), Hong Kong Vase (Gr1), Grand Prix de Chantilly (Gr2), Jockey Club Stakes (Gr2). Sire in England. First foals in 2016.

Showcasing, Arcano, Aqlaam, Captain Gerrard, Approve and Power have all sired blacktype winners. Having covered 108 mares in his first season at Bucklands Farms & Stud in Gloucestershire, there will be many who expect to see Coach House add his name to that list. His first foals made up to 38,000gns. He was trained by Aidan O'Brien, finished runner-up in a Curragh maiden in early April of his two-year-old season, then ran away with a similar contest on soft ground at Tipperary before taking the Listed Marble Hill Stakes on fast ground back at Ireland's headquarters. He then chased home No Nay Never in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, was a beaten odds-on favourite when only third to Sudirman in the Group 2 Railway Stakes nine days later, and was not seen out again. Coach House, whom Timeform rated 107, is a half-brother to current two-year-old Butterscotch (by Galileo), an Aidan O'Brien-trained filly who won her maiden by five lengths at the Curragh in late June and then chased home Clemmie in the Group 3 Grangecon Stud Stakes over the same course and distance just four days later. He is the first foal out of the six-furlong Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes winner Lesson In Humility (by Mujadil), a six-time scorer whose tally also included listed contests at Goodwood and Nottingham. She was beaten by just a neck when runner-up in another listed contest, by a head when runner-up to Serious Attitude in the Group 3 Summer Stakes at York, and her placings also included third in both the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Her half-sister Boastful (by Clodovil) won a mile listed contest at Goodwood and was placed in both the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes over six and in the Group 3 Fairy Bridge Stakes over seven and a half furlongs. Their three-year-old sibling is the Andrew Balding-trained Poet's Vanity (by Poet's Voice) who was fourth in the maiden won by Wuheida, then romped home by 10 lengths at Salisbury before taking the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes. She has run three times so far in 2017, finishing third to Daban in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, unplaced behind Winter in the 1000 Guineas and then fourth to Harry Angel in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes. Vanity (by Thatching), the grandam of Coach House, was placed a few times and the best of her siblings is Ffestiniog (by Efisio), the stakes-winning dam of the pattern-winning sprinter Eisteddfod (by Cadeaux Genereux), the Group 3-winning milers Border Patrol (by Selkirk) and Boston Lodge (by Grand Lodge), and also of the Grade 2-placed Brecon Beacon (by Spectrum). It looks a fair bet that some of Coach House's offspring will be speedy and precocious, and with his pedigree profile it is possible that he could get some talented sprinters and milers, at all ages. The Green Desert branch of the Danzig (by Northern Dancer) sire line has become one of the strongest in Europe and in Charm Spirit it has a Timeform 127-rated triple Group 1 mile star who comes from a famous sire-producing family. He covered 138 mares in his first season at Tweenhills Farm & Stud, he stood the 2016 season at Haras de Bonneval in France, was back at his original base in 2017, and he is an exciting prospect whose first foals made up to 140,000gns.
Charm Spirit was a Group 1-placed winner from three starts as a juvenile and his only defeat from six starts at three was his fifth-place finish in a vintage edition of the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Remarkably, he was not his sire's best son that year as that honour went to the four-times Group 1 star Kingman, and that Timeform 134-rated champion also has his first yearlings now.
Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert) won the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock and he was not a particularly highly-rated horse for a winner at that level, assessed by Timeform at just 121. As a stallion, however, he has been outstanding and in addition to his long and growing list of top-level winners, he is also excelling with his early stallion sons and broodmare daughters.
Australian-based I Am Invincible is the sire of Group 1-winning son Brazen Beau – who has had his first foals in 2017 – and Ballylinch Stud's classic star Lawman has been represented by the classic winners Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Just The Judge and Group 1 St Leger star Harbour Law. Vale Of York has sired stakes winners, Zebedee is the sire of the high-class sprinter Magical Memory, and Cheveley Park Stud's Group 1-winning sprinter Mayson, one of the leading freshman sires of 2016, already has four individual stakes winners to his name. Born To Sea's first three-year-olds include the classic-placed pattern winner Sea Of Grace, and current freshman Swiss Spirit has already sired several two-year-old winners in his first crop. All of this augurs well for Charm Spirit, Kingman and the other Invincible Spirit colts going to stud now and in the future.
Charm Spirit is the first foal out of the dual French winner L'Enjoleuse (by Montjeu) and that half-sister to Group 3-placed filly Megac Bliss (by Soviet Star) is out of Machaera (by Machiavellian), an unraced half-sister to four stakes winners. One of those was the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Russian Bond (by Danzig) and another was his Group 2 Temple Stakes-winning full-brother Snaadee, who achieved some success at stud without making an impact.
Their half-sister Sombreffe (by Polish Precedent) did her bit for the family by coming up with the classic-placed German Group 1 scorer Ransom O'War (by Red Ransom), but it is in the fourth generation of the family that you start to find the biggest names in this clan's roll of honour. The fourth dam of Charm Spirit is the prolific Ciboulette (by Chop Chop) and this means that Somfas (by What A Pleasure), his third dam, was a half-sister to the champion filly and hugely influential broodmare Fanfreluche (by Northern Dancer) and to that star’s full-brother Night Shift, a leading sire whose Group 1 tally included classic winners. Those who descend from Fanfreluche are distantly related to Charm Spirit, but when you have top stallions such as Flying Spur (by Danehill), Encosta De Lago (by Fairy King) and Holy Roman Emperor (by Danehill) among them, along with others who have had varying levels of success as sires, then that offers hope that their younger relation can also do well in his new role. Depending on the mares, the best of his offspring are likely to effective in the six to 10-furlong range. CHARM SPIRIT (IRE) – b.2011 – Invincible Spirit – L'Enjoleuse, 6 wins inc Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr1), Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr1), Prix Jean Prat (Gr1), Prix Paul de Moussac (Gr3), Prix Djebel (Gr3), 3rd Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere – Grand Criterium (Gr1). He is by the sire of Group 1 sires Excelebration and Helmet and he is out of the pattern-placed juvenile sprint stakes winner Nidhaal (by Observatory). She was the best of five winners out of her dam, and that granddaughter of Woodman (by Mr Prospector) is, in turn, out of an unraced half-sister to three horses of particular note. Assert (by Be My Guest) won the Group 1 Irish Derby, Group 1 Benson & Hedges Gold Cup (now Juddmonte International Stakes), Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby), and Group 1 Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes. His half-brother Bikala (by Kalamoun) also won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club, he got a second top-level success in the Group 1 Prix Ganay, and the races in which he was placed included the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. That pair disappointed at stud but their half-sister Eurobird (by Ela-Mana-Mou) came up with two listed race winners and she is the grandam of the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Pounced (by Rahy), the Allevamento di Besnate stallion whose progeny include the classic-placed Italian Group 2 scorer Full Drago. Some of his first crop are inbred to Danehill and/or to Danzig (by Northern Dancer). It seems likely that a few useful handicappers may be the best that can be expected from him. There are currently two major branches of the Danzig (by Northern Dancer) sire line – Green Desert and Danehill – and early signs that a third one, via War Front, may be emerging. Rathasker Stud stallion Bungle Inthejungle is a son of leading Australian sire Exceed And Excel (by Danehill) and, with 119 mares covered in his first season, he was among the busiest members of this cohort of stallions.
His first foals made up to €46,000. The early Exceed And Excel stallions include Excelebration and Helmet, multiple Group 1-winning racehorses who have come up with Group 1 stars Barney Roy and Thunder Snow, respectively, in their first crop. The Exceed And Excel stallions also include the Group 2-placed Burwaaz and Australian Group 2 scorer Kuroshio, who, like Bungle Inthejungle, have their first yearlings in Europe this year. Rated 110 on the official handicap at two, and 109 by Timeform, his best form came that season when he won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood and the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot, between which he was a half-length runner-up to Sir Prancealot in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster.
Inbred 4x4x4 to Northern Dancer (by Nearctic), Bungle Inthejungle is one of nine winners out of the dual scorer Licence To Thrill (by Wolfhound) and that makes him a half-brother to the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen Stakes winner Muarrab (by Oasis Dream), a full-brother to listed scorer Waveband, and a half-brother to the pattern-placed pair Group Therapy (by Choisir) and Classic Encounter (by Lujain).
His grandam is Crime Of Passion (by Dragonara Palace), who won the Group 3 Cherry Hinton Stakes, was runner-up in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes and third in the Group 1 Prix Robert Papin, and her descendants also include the pattern-placed sprint stakes winner Maltese Falcon (by Mark of Esteem). Primula Boy (by Sallust), who won the Listed Ayr Gold Cup, was a half-brother to Crime Of Passion and their siblings also include The Queen of Soul (by Chief Singer), dam of the pattern-placed stakes winner Ella (by Brief Truce), grandam of Group 1-placed pattern scorer Dobby Road (by Grape Tree Road) and more distant ancestor of the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) winner Style Vendome (by Anabaa), whose first two-year-olds are winning in France this year. Bungle Inthejungle will be expected to get some early juveniles, and it is likely that most of his best progeny will be sprinters, but with some of the mares from whom his first crop have been born, some of them may be effective at around a mile. BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE (GB) – b.2010 – Exceed And Excel – Licence To Thrill, 4 wins inc Cornwallis Stakes (Gr3), Molecomb Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Flying Childers Stakes (Gr2). Sire in Ireland. The Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes, run over 10 furlongs at Leopardstown, has an excellent record of producing top-class horses since the turn of the century, and although Battle Of Marengo did not go on to win at the highest level afterwards, he was Group 2-placed at Royal Ascot, and was beaten by less than two lengths when finishing fourth to Ruler Of The World in the Derby at Epsom. Timeform rated him 117.
The Ballyhane Stud stallion, who covered 117 mares in his first season, was also a leading juvenile (Timeform 116p). He was third over seven furlongs at Leopardstown on his debut in August, followed that with an 11-length score over the same trip at Gowran Park and then beat subsequent Irish Derby star Trading Leather by one and three-quarter lengths in a mile listed contest at Leopardstown before easily winning the Group 2 Beresford Stakes over the same trip in heavy ground at the Curragh. His first foals made up to 55,000gns.
Battle Of Marengo is by the dual Derby hero and great stallion Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) and so he is by the sire of the northern hemisphere classic stallions Teofilo, New Approach and Frankel. Other Galileo sons who have got at least one top-level winner to their name, so far, are Cima De Triomphe, Heliostatic, Rip Van Winkle, Roderic O'Connor, Sixties Icon, and Soldier Of Fortune.
He is a full-brother to the Group 2 Debutante Stakes runner-up Perhaps, he is out of the Listed Victor McCalmont Stakes winner Anna Karenina (by Green Desert), and his dam's blacktype siblings include Windsor Palace (by Danehill Dancer), the Group 3 Mooresbridge Stakes winner who picked up third place in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. The mare's siblings also include the dam of Group 3 Round Tower Stakes scorer Rabatash (by Johannesburg). Simaat (by Mr Prospector), the winning grandam of Battle Of Marengo, is out of the listed-placed six-times US scorer Satiety (by Our Native) and that mare was a full-sister to 1979's US juvenile champion Rockhill Native. The triple Grade 1 star's three-year-old form included a win in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes and third place in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes. There are other blacktype winners to be found under these first four generations of the family, but nothing that gives us any clues as to Battle Of Marengo's stallion potential. Being a high-class son of Galileo, and out of a stakes-winning Green Desert (by Danzig) mare, has attracted plenty of support for him, and although some of his first crop will win as two-year-olds, it is likely that his best results will come with three-year-olds and older horses, from a mile and upwards. BATTLE OF MARENGO (IRE) – b.2010 – Galileo – Anna Karenina, 5 wins inc Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes (Gr2), Beresford Stakes (Gr2), Ballysax Stakes (Gr3), Golden Fleece Stakes (L), 2nd King Edward VII Stakes (Gr2). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2016.

Galileo's status as one of the greatest stallions of all times is without question and now that his a string of his earliest sons and daughters at stud are coming up with Group/Grade 1 winners too he appears to be on the verge of forging his own dynasty.
Of course, not every one of his sons is going to become a leading sire, but so far Teofilo and New Approach have sired European classic winners, and each of Cima De Triomphe, Frankel, Heliostatic, Rip Van Winkle, Roderic O'Connor, Sixties Icon and Soldier Of Fortune has got at least one winner at the highest level somewhere among the world's Category I countries. The string of Galileo stallions at earlier stages of their stud careers includes the dual Derby hero Australia. The Coolmore Stud team member covered 178 mares in his first season, only a handful of his first foals appeared in an auction ring, but they made up to 300,000gns. Clearly, he is one of the most exciting individuals among this group of sires and likely to be a star player at the yearling sales of 2017. Timeform-rated 116p at two, following his impressive defeat of Free Eagle in a Group 3 contest at Leopardstown, he finished third to Night Of Thunder and Kingman in a particularly strong edition of the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket before going on to take both the Derby and Irish Derby in style. He added victory in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes and was not seen out again after his shock neck defeat by The Grey Gatsby, the colt he beat by two lengths at York, in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.
His Timeform rating of 132 put him 2lbs behind his dual Derby-winning sire Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) and 7lbs ahead of his outstanding dam Ouija Board (by Cape Cross), the dual Oaks and dual Breeders' Cup heroine whose career tally of 10 wins also featured the Prince of Wales's Stakes, Hong Kong Vase and Nassau Stakes.
Her first foal is the Australian Group 3-winning gelding Voodoo Prince (by Kingmambo) and her Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old Frontiersman (by Dubawi) has been runner-up in both the Group 1 Coronation Cup and Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes this season, beaten by Highland Reel and Hawkbill respectively. Ouija Board was the best of two blacktype earners for her dam, Selection Board (by Welsh Pageant). The next dam is the Group 3 Falmouth Stakes fourth Ouija (by Silly Season) and although the plethora of pattern winners that descend from that mare do not contain any notable sires, that should not detract from Australia's potential. Most of those major winners have been fillies, and they include the classic-placed Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Roseate Tern (by Blakeney), mile Group 1 star Red Bloom (by Selkirk), German classic scorer Full Rose (by Aqlaam) and the classic-placed pattern winner Red Camellia (by Polar Falcon). There are, of course, males among the family's big winners, but Grade 1-placed stakes winner Red Fort (by Green Desert) was a gelding, as was the outstanding Teleprompter. A full-brother to Australia's grandam Selection Board, Teleprompter was one of a handful of top-class geldings who were pivotal in bringing about an end to the barring of his type from Group 1 events in England and Ireland, and although he did not win one here, he did take the Grade 1 Arlington Million across the Atlantic. His half-sister Rosia Bay (by High Top), dam of the aforementioned Roseate Tern, was also responsible for the four-times Group 1 star Ibn Bey (by Mill Reef), and it is a little surprising that in the Breeders' Cup coverage each year, when European dirt performances come up for discussion, that his second-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic is not mentioned. Ibn Bey did spend time at stud but, in common with most sons of the great Mill Reef (by Never Bend) – Shirley Heights and his male line descendants being the notable exception – he failed to make an impact in that role. That should not be held as a mark against Australia as their actual relationship is somewhat distant and the younger chestnut represents a male line that has become a powerful force, one that has been as successful as the Mill Reef one was disappointing. Australia will, of course, get two-year-old winners as a freshman in 2018 and it is likely that there will be some blacktype earners among them. It is as three-year-old and older horses, however, that most of his offspring will be seen to best effect, and with his combination of race record, pedigree and breeder support, there is every reason to hope that he not waste much time in adding his name to the growing list of Galileo stallions getting at least one winner at the highest level. AUSTRALIA (GB) – ch.2011 – Galileo – Ouija Board, 5 wins inc Derby (Gr1), Irish Derby (Gr1), Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr1), Golden Fleece Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Irish Champion Stakes (Gr1), 3rd 2000 Guineas (Gr1). A high-class miler by a leading sire son of Danzig (by Northern Dancer), Anodin stands at Haras du Quesnay and he covered 138 mares in his first season. Those credentials would be enough to make him an interesting member of this group of stallions, but being a full-brother to the brilliant miler Goldikova is arguably his strongest selling point.
His first foals made up to €40,000, from just a handful offered. Goldikova was Timeform-rated 101p at two, 129 at three, 133 at four and five years of age, and 129 at six. Her 17 wins included the Queen Anne Stakes, Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, Prix Jacques le Marois, Falmouth Stakes, Prix de la Foret, four editions of the Prix Rothschild, two of the Prix d'Ispahan and three Breeders' Cup Miles – all Group/Grade 1 - and her string of top-level placings included two classics and another edition of the Breeders' Cup Mile. There have been some notable updates on the page already this season as Goldikova's daughter Terrakova (by Galileo) has won the Group 3 Prix Cleopatre and been third to Senga in the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks), and Anodin's half-sister Gold Luck (by Redoute's Choice) has won the Group 3 Prix Vanteaux, been runner-up to La Sardane in the Group 2 Prix de Sandringham and third to Thunder Snow in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat. Anodin, whom Timeform rated 124 as a four-year-old, is out of Born Gold (by Blushing Groom), a winning full-sister to the classic-placed Group 1 Coronation Stakes and Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac scorer Gold Splash. In addition to the triple European champion, his siblings also include the classic-placed Group 1 Prix Vermeille heroine Galikova (by Galileo), and Group 3 scorers Gold Sound (by Green Tune) and Gold Round (by Caerleon), the latter dam of three flat blacktype scorers of her own.
His grandam Riviere D'Or (by Lyphard) won the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary and was runner-up in the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks), his third dam, Gold River (by Riverman), was European champion in 1981 and the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine's seven wins also featured the Group 1 Prix du Cadran and Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak.
There are a variety of pattern winners under these first three branches of the family and, with regard to Anodin's stallion potential, the one who catches the eye is Goldneyev (by Nureyev). A classic-placed stakes-winning half-brother to Riviere D'Or, he had a few shining moments in his stud career, most notably through the exploits of his sons Gold Away and Dananeyev. There is no doubt that Anodin was one of the best-bred racehorses of recent years, which is not always the same thing as being one of the best bred to achieve sire success at stud, but with Goldneyev on the page that offers encouragement that at least some of his progeny will become pattern winners and even Group 1 horses. ANODIN (IRE) – b.2010 – Anabaa – Born Gold, 2 wins inc Prix Paul de Moussac (Gr3), 2nd Breeders' Cup Mile (Gr1), Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr1), Prix d'Ispahan (Gr1), 3rd Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr1), Queen Anne Stakes (Gr1). A talented sprinter whom Timeform rated 117, American Devil was a talented performer from two to five years of age, he stands at Haras de Grandcamp and he covered 55 mares in his first season.
He won the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure and finished third in the Group 3 Prix La Rochette as a juvenile, was listed-placed over six furlongs at four, and he won the Group 3 Prix du Palais Royal, over seven furlongs, at the age of five. He was also placed in the Group 3 Prix de la Porte Maillot and Group 3 Prix du Pin that season, both over that same trip.
American Devil is a son of the classic-winning miler American Post (by Bering) and so is by the sire of Group 1 star Robin Of Navan and of the unfortunate Liliside, who was disqualified after finishing first past the post in the 2010 edition of the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas).
He is a half-brother to Lion D'Anvers (by Kentucky Dynamite), who was a pattern-placed stakes winner over nine furlongs in France before moving to Qatar, and he is out of Alcestes Selection (by Selkirk), who won over 12 furlongs, a furlong farther than the distance over which her half-sister Belle Isnarde (by Desert Prince) picked up a listed contest in Italy. Attitre (by Mtoto), his grandam, was multiple blacktype-placed in Europe, notably when a one-length runner-up to Nicole Pharly in the Group 1 Oaks d'Italia, before crossing the Atlantic where she won a listed handicap. Her lightly raced half-sister Alpenglow (by Ezzoud) was twice listed placed over a mile in England, another sibling is the US blacktype scorer Silca Key Service (by Bering), while the once-raced Shadowglow (by Shaadi) was the dam of prolific dual-purpose gelding Holy Orders (by Unblest), whose flat wins featured the Listed Ballycullen Stakes and Listed Vintage crop Stakes. Their dam, Aquaglow (by Caerleon), who also won over a mile, was a half-sister to a pair of Italian stakes winners – Life On Light (by Arctic Tern) and Spend A Penny (by Glint Of Gold) – and their siblings also included an unraced mare called Light Of Erin (by Palace Music), who did her part for the family by coming up with the talented Barbaricus (by Lion Hunter), an Australian Group 2 scorer who finished third in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. Most of American Devil's early runners are likely to be in France, and although some of them may win at two, it seems likely that his best results will come with three-year-olds and older horses, potentially over a wide range of distances. AMERICAN DEVIL (FR) - b.2009 - American Post - Okapina, 4 wins inc Prix du Palais Royal (Gr3), Prix Roland de Chambure (L), 2nd Prix de la Porte Maillot (Gr3), Prix Servanne (L), 3rd Prix La Rochette (Gr3), Prix du Pin (Gr3). His first foals made up to 95,000gns. He is one of seven winners out of a placed mare called Miss Indigo (by Indian Ridge), his siblings include the pattern-placed stakes-winning sprinter Humidor (by Camacho), and although this might create an impression that staying a mile may have been a little further than expected, that would not be the case. His grandam, Monaiya, is a daughter of the Group 1 Irish Derby hero Shareef Dancer (by Northern Dancer) and her offspring feature Musetta (by Cadeaux Genereux), the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes winner who was Group 3-placed at 10 furlongs and third in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes. This always made it likely that the colt would get a mile. Monaiya is a half-sister to the mile Grade 1-placed, seven-furlong Grade 2 scorer Vanderlin (by Halling) and her dam, Massorah (by Habitat), who won the Group 3 Premio Omenoni, was the top-rated three-year-old sprinter in Italy in 1983. There is nothing in the first few generations to give us any indication of how he might do as a stallion, but his pedigree and racing profile suggest that although some of his progeny may be precocious sorts, some will be improve with time, some will be milers, and given the broodmare sires of some of his initial crop, it is also possible that Alhebayeb will get some who stay 10 furlongs. Dark Angel's first stallion sons with runners – both freshmen of 2016 – are dual Group 1 sprint star Lethal Force, whose early runners include several impressive winners, and the Group 1-placed Tough As Nails, whose tiny first crop has yielded two placed horses from his first three runners.
