Unbeaten in three starts as a late-season juvenile, Kingston Hill went on to become a leading middle-distance performer at three, chasing home Australia in the Derby at Epsom, winning the St Leger at Doncaster, and finishing fourth in both the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes and Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Timeform rated him 119p at two and 125 for his second season. He is a member of the Coolmore stallion team and there were 78 foals in his first crop. He is a first-crop son of classic and multiple top-level winner Mastercraftsman (by Danehill Dancer) and so is by the sire of classic stars The Grey Gatsby (sire in France) and Alpha Centauri, among an overall total of nine Group 1 stars among more than 50 individual stakes winners, and counting.
Kingston Hill is the best representative of Group 3 Prix de Flore scorer Audacieuse (by Rainbow Quest), his dam’s siblings include Group 3 Acomb Stakes winner Waiter’s Dream (by Oasis Dream) and pattern-placed, stakes-winning stayer Lord Jim (by Kahyasi), and his grandam is a half-sister to a classic winner.
That star is Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) and Group 1 Prix de la Foret heroine Danseuse Du Soir (by Thatching), who is the dam of Group 1 Gran Criterium scorer Scintillo (by Fantastic Light) and of multiple Irish pattern winner Jumbajukiba (by Barathea). The other blacktype horses under this third generation of the family include Group 2-placed middle-distance stakes winner Don Corleone (by Caerleon), dual listed scorer Dana Springs (by Aragon), Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club third Circus Dance (by Sadler’s Wells), and – more distantly connected to those horses – the talented Danzon (by Royal Academy) who was a pattern winner in France before going on to become a Grade 1-placed dual Grade 3 scorer in the USA. Kingston Hill’s pedigree represents a mixture of miler speed with middle-distance stamina and it seems likely that most of his offspring will prove best as three-year-olds and older horses, and in the broad mile to two mile-plus range. He will, of course, get two-year-old winners too, although the best of them are likely to be seen out in the second half of the season. KINGSTON HILL (GB) - gr.2011 - Mastercraftsman - Audacieuse, 4 wins inc St Leger Stakes (Gr1), Racing Post Trophy (Gr1), Autumn Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Derby Stakes (Gr1). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2017.
