Winner over six furlongs at Dundalk on the second of two starts as a juvenile, Slade Power was a lightly-rated dual stakes winner at three – earning a Timeform rating of 113 – but went on to become one of Europe's top sprinters as an older horse.

His best of three pattern wins as a four-year-old came in the Group 2 British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot, he finished the year on a Timeform rating of 125, and then came back at five to win three of his four starts: the Group 3 Greenlands Stakes, Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes, and Group 1 July Cup – moving up to a Timeform mark of 127.

One of two Group 1-winning sons of Cheveley Park Stud stallion Dutch Art (by Medicean) who have their first yearlings in 2017 – the other is Garswood – Slade Power stands at Kildangan Stud and he had been very popular with breeders.

He covered 148 mares in his first season and his first foals made up to 150,000gns.

His winning dam Girl Power (by Key of Luck) is a full-sister to the stakes-placed Key Rose, his third dam is the Group 3 Premio Primi Passi scorer Balqis (by Advocator), and the blacktype winners who appear under the fourth generation of the family include Grade 1 Hollywood Derby scorer Slew The Dragon (by Seattle Slew), his Grade 2-winning full-brother Slew The Night and Grade 2-placed brother Seattle Knight, each of whom had some success at stud from limited opportunities.

Slade Power's pedigree makes him something of an unknown quantity as a potential sire of stakes and pattern winners, but his top-class racing record, the support he has received, and being a Machiavellian-line stallion from a blacktype family, all combine to make him a fascinating prospect.

A pattern-placed stakes-winner at two, Group 1-placed Group 2 scorer over seven furlongs at three, and Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest star at four, Cheveley Park Stud stallion Garswood was understandably popular in his first season, covering 100 mares.

His first foals made up to 75,000gns.

He is a son of that farm's classic-placed Group 1 winner Dutch Art (by Medicean), as is the dual Group 1-winning sprinter and first-foals sire Slade Power, and so represents the Machiavellian branch of the Mr Prospector (by Raise a Native) line.

The first foal out of the unraced Penchant (by Kyllachy), he is out of a mare who could be described as being a three-parts sister to Infallible (by Pivotal). She won the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, she was runner-up in both the Group 1 Coronation Stakes and Group 1 Falmouth Stakes.

In addition to the pattern-placed stakes-winning filly Intimation (by Dubawi), she is the dam of the multiple Group 1-placed dual Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes scorer Mutakayyef (by Sea The Stars).

​A full-sister to the blacktype-placed sprinters Watchable and Remarkable, Infallible is out of Irresistible (by Cadeaux Genereux), a listed race winner who was runner-up in the Group 3 Brownstown Stakes. That mare, the grandam of Garswood, is, in turn, out of Polish Romance (by Danzig) and that makes her a half-sister to several dams of stakes winners.

Her grandsons include the listed scorer and Group 1 Prix Morny third Parliament Square (by Acclamation) and her grand-daughters include Group 3 Prix du Calvados winner Queen Bee (by Le Havre), German listed scorer Tickle Me Blue (by Iffraaj), and current three-year-old Eternally (by Dutch Art), who won a seven-furlong listed contest at Ascot at the start of October.

The fourth dam of Garswood is another notable as she, Some Romance (by Fappiano), won the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and Grade 1 Matron Stakes and was placed in each of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks, Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes, Grade 1 Monmouth Oaks and Grade 1 Ashland Stakes. Her Grade 1-winning half-brother Vilzak (by Green Dancer) sired several stakes winners.

Garswood should be capable of getting sprinters and milers among all age groups and it seems likely that there will be some stakes and pattern winners among them, including a few who can perform with credit at the highest level.
