Winner of a mile newcomers' race on soft ground at Saint-Cloud on his only start as a juvenile, Masterstroke went on to become an Arc-placed Group 2 scorer. He is by the sire of the Group 1-winning successful sires Manduro, Samum and Shirocco, he stands for just €3,000 at Haras du Logis, in France, and with the distaff line he represents, there would be no surprise at all if can come up with one or more Group 1 performers.
His siblings include the Group 3 scorer Moonlight Magic (by Cape Cross), his dam is the dual Oaks-placed stakes winner Melikah (by Lammtarra), and she is among the string of notable winners out of the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Urban Sea (by Miswaki), one of the greatest broodmares of all time.
Her brilliant sons Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) and Sea The Stars (by Cape Cross) are outstanding stallions, her dual Group 1 scorer Black Sam Bellamy (by Sadler's Wells) has sired pattern winners, and her top daughter, My Typhoon (by Giant's Causeway), was a Grade 1 winner in the USA.
Group 3 scorer Urban Ocean (by Bering) has sired winners from limited opportunities, classic-placed stakes winner Born To Sea (by Invincible Spirit) is a successful freshman sire in 2016, her classic-placed pattern-winning daughter All Too Beautiful (by Sadler's Wells) is the dam of dual Oaks-placed stakes winner Wonder Of Wonders (by Kingmambo), and her pattern-placed filly Cherry Hinton (by Green Desert) is responsible for Group 1 Irish Oaks heroine Bracelet (by Montjeu). And, as those late-night infomercials say, that's not all! Urban Sea's classic-winning half-brother King's Best (by Kingmambo) is the sire of Derby and Arc hero Workforce, among many other notable performers, and those who are out of or descend from her half-sisters include the Group 1-sires Tertullian (by Miswaki), Anabaa Blue (by Anabaa) and Tamayuz (by Nayef), the latter pair having been Group 1 winners on the track too. There are many other talented horses to be found in just these first few generations of the pedigree, including classic-placed Group 2 Greenlands Stakes winner Mustajeeb (by Nayef), who has completed his first season at Overbury Stud. Masterstroke's pedigree and race record will also attract the attention of those in the National Hunt sector, but there is every reason to hope that he can get good flat horses too, including one or more who can perform with credit at the highest level. MASTERSTROKE (USA) – b.2009 – Monsun – Melikah, 4 wins inc Grand Prix de Deauville (Gr2), Prix Frederic de Lagrange (L), 2nd Prix Hocquart (Gr2), Prix du Lys (Gr3), 3rd Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr1). Sire in France. First foals in 2015.

A half-brother to the pattern-placed juvenile sprinter Al Muthana (by Pastoral Pursuits), he is out of one-time scorer Annabelle Ja (by Singspiel), who is a half-sister to the dual Scandinavian champion Alyshakeys (by Sendawar). Her biggest win, on the international scene, was in the Group 3 Polar Cup at Ovrevoll. The emergence of Dark Angel (by Acclamation) as a major European sire was something of a surprise given his lack of three-year-old form and his somewhat thin distaff line, but he repeatedly delivers the goods, his profile continues to rise, and he has a growing number of talented sons who are proving very popular with breeders.
Lethal Force is among the first of them and the dual Group 1 sprint star, a Cheveley Park Stud team member, has 99 known individuals in his first crop. He was the champion older sprinter in Europe in 2013, a Group 2 scorer over seven furlongs at the age of three, and although there are no wins on his two-year-old record, it would be a mistake to think that he did not show talent or precocity at that age. He was runner-up over five furlongs at Ascot on his debut in early May, was short-headed but relegated to third over a further farther at Goodwood three weeks later, and then finished fourth in both the Group 2 Coventry Stakes and Group 2 Vintage Stakes, the latter over seven furlongs. He skated in by nine lengths at Bath on his first start at three, was a neck runner-up to Swiss Spirit in a listed contest at Newbury a few weeks later, then finished third behind Slade Power in the Listed Sandy Lane Stakes, fourth behind Ishvana in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes, and later beat Strong Suit by a neck in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes. The horse he beat in both the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Group 1 July Cup at four was Society Rock, the colt who had beaten him by a head in the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes earlier that year, and it was the brilliant Moonlight Cloud whom he chased home in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville that August.
Lethal Force is out of Land Army (by Desert Style), who is an unraced full-sister to Ascot Family, the stakes-winning dam of Group 2 Prix Robert Papin winner and Group 1 Prix Morny runner-up Family One (by Dubai Destination).
Their half-sister Flanders (by Common Grounds), who won the Listed Scarborough Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 2 King's Stand Stakes, is the dam of Group 1 Sprint Cup star G Force (by Tamayuz) and of Louvain (by Sinndar), who is, in turn, the Grade 2-winning dam of champion and classic star Flotilla (by Mizzen Mast). There is a mile pattern scorer and the Group 1-placed middle-distance listed scorer, Gain (by Mississipian), under the fourth dam, the talented and prolific Miss Ribot (by Sir Ribot), but it is the first two generations of the family where all of the speed is evident. It is reasonable to presume that some of the Lethal Force runners will be talented juveniles and that, as time passes, his best will tend to be sprinters and/or milers. LETHAL FORCE (IRE) – gr.2009 – Dark Angel – Land Army, 4 wins inc July Cup (Gr1), Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr1), Hungerford Stakes (Gr2), 2nd Prix Maurice de Gheest (Gr1), Duke of York Stakes (Gr2), Carnarvon Stakes (L), 3rd Park Stakes (Gr2), Sandy Lane Stakes (L). A classic star who notched up six wins and three Group 1-placings from just nine starts, Intello was among the most sought-after stallions at the recent Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale and it can be expected that his stock will also be popular at all of the other major auctions of the year. He spent his first two seasons at Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket, stood at Haras du Quesnay in 2016, and there are 80 known individuals in his first crop.
Intello won both his starts as a juvenile, mile contests at Longchamp and Maisons-Laffitte in the autumn, his classic success was a two-length defeat of Morandi in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby), he was third in a blanket finish for the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas), third to the brilliant Moonlight Cloud in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois, and rounded off his career with a third place finish behind the outstanding pair Treve and Orfevre in the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
In addition to being a son of one of the world's greatest stallions, a horse whose early sire sons include the leading pair Teofilo and New Approach, he also has the attraction of representing one of the most famous families in the stud book.
He is the second foal out of Impressionnante (by Danehill), who won the Group 2 Prix de Sandringham and was runner-up in both the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) and Group 1 Prix d'Astarte, and his grandam is the Group 1 Prix de la Foret and Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest heroine Occupandiste (by Kaldoun). That champion has three other blacktype winners to her name and one of that trio is Mondialiste (by Galileo), last year's Grade 1 Woodbine Mile winner and Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile runner-up who added to his tally with victory in the Grade 1 Arlington Million earlier this month. Occupandiste's daughter Only Answer (by Green Desert) was a high-class sprinter, who won the Group 3 Prix de Saint-Georges and Group 3 Prix du Petit Couvert, and her dam, Only Seule (by Lyphard), is out of the Group 2 Prix d'Astarte scorer Elle Seule (by Exclusive Native). That makes her a half-sister to Group 1 July Cup champion and blacktype sire Elnadim (by Danzig) and also to Mehthaaf (by Nureyev), the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine whose descendants include this year's classic-placed Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois star Ribchester (by Iffraaj). Khulood (by Storm Cat), who won the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, is also a half-sister to Only Seule and her three-year-old Adool (by Teofilo) has a return to pattern company in her sights following a recent listed success at Gowran Park. The Dermot Weld-trained chestnut has won two of her three starts, her only defeat being a third place finish against the older Decorated Knight in the Group 3 Meld Stakes at Leopardstown last month. The fifth dam of Intello is, of course, the Grade 1 Matron Stakes winner Fall Aspen (by Pretense), one of the most celebrated broodmares of all time. In addition to the Group/Grade 1 winners Hamas (by Danzig; blacktype sire), Timber Country (by Woodman; Grade 1 sire), Northern Aspen (by Northern Dancer) and Fort Wood (by Sadler's Wells; Group 1 sire), she came up with the Group 2 scorers Bianconi (by Danzig; Group 1 sire) and Colorado Dancer (by Shareef Dancer; dam of Timeform 140-rated superstar Dubai Millennium), and others of note. There are no guarantees in this industry, and the better stallions are some way back in his pedigree, but there is every reason to hope that classic star Intello can become another top-class stallion son of the mighty Galileo (by Sadler's Wells). INTELLO (GER) – b.2010 – Galileo – Impressionnante, 6 wins inc Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1), Prix Messidor (Gr3), Prix du Prince d'Orange (Gr3), Fielden Stakes (L), 3rd Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr1), Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr1), Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr1). There are 161 known members of his first crop. The Beeches Stud resident is a half-brother to Derby runner-up The Great Gatsby (by Sadler's Wells), to the Group 1-placed pair Roman Empress (by Sadler's Wells) and Magritte (by Sadler's Wells), and also to Mount Athos (by Montjeu), the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes and Group 3 Ormonde Stakes winner who finished third to Fiorente in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup in 2013. In addition to prolific Grade 1 sire Oscar, Imperial Monarch's dam Ionian Sea (by Slip Anchor) is also a half-sister to Blue Stag (by Sadler's Wells), the listed scorer who chased home Quest For Fame in 1990's edition of the Derby at Epsom. The Sadler's Wells line has had a profound influence on National Hunt racing and breeding, and although this representative of it will have foals and yearlings on offer at the jumps-oriented sales later in the year, and may have the occasional flat runner in the next few seasons, his best sales results are likely to begin at the various store horses auctions in 2018 and 2019. After that we can expect to see bumper, point-to-point and hurdles winners for him, chasers following when his progeny are a bit older, and it seems likely that he will become a successful blacktype sire within National Hunt circles. A talented two-year-old whose only defeat from five completed starts (he unseated once) was a head defeat in a valuable sales race over seven furlongs at Newmarket, he was also precocious and made a winning debut over six furlongs in early June of that year. He chased home Toronado in the Group 3 Craven Stakes on his seasonal reappearance, was only beaten by three-parts of a length when fifth to Style Vendome in a blanket finish for the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas), was fourth behind Magician in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas, and then won the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly. Havana Gold is the best among several winners out of the talented sprinter Jessica's Dream (by Desert Style). She won seven times, including the Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes and Group 3 Premio Omenoni, she was third in the Group 2 Flying Five, and she is a half-sister to Majors Cast (by Victory Note), a listed scorer who was placed in both the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes and Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. A first-crop son of the top-class miler Henrythenavigator (by Kingmambo), George Vancouver was a smart two-year-old but unplaced in all three of his starts at three. He got off the mark at the third attempt, easily winning a six-furlong Dundalk maiden, then failed by three-parts of a length to beat Reckless Abandon in the Group 1 Prix Morny before disappointing when favourite in a Group 3 contest at the Curragh.
His final two starts that season are probably what helped to secure a place at stud for him, because they showed that his run at Deauville had not been a fluke. He finished third behind champion Dawn Approach in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket and then won the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf over a mile on firm ground at Santa Anita.
Saarland (by Unbridled) was the best of his siblings, a Grade 2 Remsen Stakes winner whose notable placings included second in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap. He sired a few stakes winners from his time at Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky, but was retired after just three seasons, due to a fertility issue, and then died following a paddock accident.
His half-brother Reparations (by Forty Niner), who won a nine furlong maiden, has also sired some blacktype horses, stakes winners and six-figured earners from limited opportunities. Being a half-brother to two blacktype sires boosts the prospects of George Vancouver, who, like them, also represents a branch of the Mr Prospector (by Raise A Native) line. His dam, Versailles Treaty (by Danzig), was a top-class performer in the USA where she won the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes, Grade 1 Test Stakes, Grade 1 Gazelle Stakes and Grade 1 Ruffian Handicap. Her string of Grade 1 placings included two editions of the Breeders' Cup Distaff and two of the Beldame Stakes, and this made her easily the best of three blacktype-winning offspring of the Grade 2 runner-up Ten Cents A Dance (by Buckpasser). Her Grade 1-placed half-sister Arabian Dancer (by Damascus) was the dam of the Grade 3 scorers Out of Place (by Cox's Ridge) and Lead Kindly Light (by Majestic Light), the latter a filly who became the dam of Grade 1-winning miler Gold Fever (by Forty Niner) and grandam of Grade 1 Man O' War Stakes scorer Boisterous (by Distorted Humor). Out of Place and Gold Fever got some notable results as stallions. The first-named began his career in Florida, earned an upgrade to Claiborne Farm in Kentucky, and his 44 stakes winners included the Grade 2 scorers Orville N Wilbur's and Certain. Gold Fever, on the other hand, is responsible for the Grade 1-placed dual Grade 2 scorer Gold Mover and for Canadian champion and classic star A Bit O'Gold. Arabian Dancer's more distant descendants include Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes winner and New York-based stallion Bellamy Road (by Concerto), whose 25 stakes winners include the Grade 1 scorer Toby's Corner. His connection to George Vancouver is remote, but classic-placed multiple Grade 1 star and blacktype sire General Assembly (by Secretariat), who is a half-brother to his grandam Ten Cents A Dance, is closer. That star's multiple Grade 3-winning half-sister Expressive Dance (by Riva Ridge) came up with Grade 1 winner and successful sire Chief Honcho (by Chief's Crown), she is the grandam of Grade 2 scorer and blacktype sire American Chance (by Cure The Blues), and her descendants also include the Group 1-winning miler and current second-crop sire Poet's Voice (by Dubawi). The pattern in this family, therefore, is that it produced top-class racehorses and it also gets colts who are capable of going on to sire stakes and pattern winners at stud. It is reasonable to suggest, therefore, that some blacktype success awaits progeny of George Vancouver. He stands at Haras de la Hetraie, in France, and one of his first yearlings sold was a €50,000 colt bought by Jean-Claude Rouget. GEORGE VANCOUVER (USA) – b.2010 – Henrythenavigator – Versailles Treaty, 2 wins inc Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr1), 2nd Prix Morny (Gr1), 3rd Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1). Sire in France. First foals in 2015.

A precocious and speedy juvenile who rounded off his first season with victory in the Group 1 Criterium International over a mile at Saint-Cloud, this great-grandson of Night Shift (by Northern Dancer) kicked off his three-year-old season with victory in the Group 3 Prix Djebel over seven furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte and then chased home Camelot in the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
These were the high points of his career as he was unplaced in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) and in Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly and, as a four-year-old, in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free at Meydan. His only other outing after his classic performance was a second place finish over a mile on the polytrack at Chantilly a few weeks before his trip to Dubai.
One of five stakes winners for his now Japan-based sire, who is also responsible for the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) scorer Lucayan, French Fifteen represents a branch of one of the Aga Khan's most famous families.
He is out of the dual winner Spring Morning (by Ashkalani), which makes him a half-brother to the 12-furlong listed scorer Night Run (by Martaline), and his dam is a half-sister to the pattern-placed middle-distance stakes winner Zaydiya (by Shernazar). That filly is, in turn, the grandam of multiple pattern-winning miler Zarewitsch (by Night Shift) and third dam of the Group 3 Prix Daphnis winner and Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes runner-up Ziyarid (by Desert Style). His third dam is Zahra (by Habitat), the only daughter of the great Petite Etoite (by Petition), and so his grandam's siblings include the mares from whom the Group 1 stars Zarkava (by Zamindar), Zainta (by Kahyasi) and Ugugu (by Galileo) descend. There are many other pattern winners who can claim Zahra as a direct ancestor, with Honorius (by Holy Roman Emperor), Zafadola (by Darshaan) and Earnshaw (by Medaglia d'Oro) being three who have Group 1-placing to their names. French Fifteen stands at Haras du Logis Saint Germain in Normandy, France, it is likely that most of his flat runners will be in that country, and it would not be a surprise to see him come up with some capable performers at around eight to 10 furlongs, in addition to some who can show useful form as juveniles. FRENCH FIFTEEN (FR) – ch.2009 – Turtle Bowl – Spring Morning, 6 wins inc Criterium International (Gr1), Prix Djebel (Gr3), Criterium de l'Ouest (L), 2nd 2000 Guineas (Gr1), Prix Thomas Bryon (Gr3). He made a winning debut over five furlongs at Newmarket in early May, was runner-up in the Listed National Stakes at Sandown a few weeks later, the won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood before, two starts later, he failed by just a nose and a nose to beat Intense Focus and Lord Shanakill in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes. He was unplaced behind Sea The Stars in the Group 1 2000 Guineas on his seasonal reappearance, and he was unplaced every time he tried the mile for the rest of his career, but over seven he won the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood and was later listed-placed in Abu Dhabi. Finjaan, who stands at Gazeley Stud in Newmarket, has 29 known representatives in his first crop. He is a son of the dual Group 1-winning sprinter Royal Applause (by Waajib), who is also the sire of the prolific blacktype stallion Acclamation (sire of Dark Angel), and he is out of Alhufoof (by Dayjur), a daughter of the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes and Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes heroine Cheval Volant (by Kris S). That star failed to produce any stakes-winning offspring, but her daughter Amanah (by Mr Prospector), who is, of course, a half-sister to Alhufoof, gave us the Group 1 1000 Guineas heroine Lahan (by Unfuwain) and is the gandam of Listed Cocked Hat Stakes winner and Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes runner-up Alwaary (by Dynaformer). Cheval Volant's dual Grade 3-winning half-sister Chaldea (by Cutlass) is the grandam and third dam of several notable individuals, including Grade 2 West Virginia Derby winner Soul Warrior (by Lion Heart), Grade 1-placed stakes winner Better Than Bonds (by Sweetsouthernsaint), and 2011's US juvenile filly champion My Miss Aurelia (by Smart Strike), whose wins include the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes. Finjaan has very few representatives compared to some of his cohorts, but as a leading juvenile who is by the sire of Acclamation, it would be no surprise to see him get some talented juveniles and high-class handicappers or even the occasional blacktype horse in the sprinter or miler divisions. FINJAAN (GB) – b.2006 – Royal Applause – Alhufoof, 3 wins inc Lennox Stakes (Gr2), Molecomb Stakes (Gr3), 2nd National Stakes (L), 3rd Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1), HH The President of the UAE Cup (L). It was somewhat of a surprise to find that this top-class perfomer has only 38 members in his first crop, although his second one should be bigger when the final numbers are in. He is by the sire of the notably successful stallions Kyllachy and Siyouni, and although all of his top form was as an older horse, it should not be forgotten that his only start as a juvenile came in July of that year and it was an impressive six-length success over seven furlongs at Newmarket.
He was off the track for 15 months after that, but returned with an easy win in a mile handicap, also at Newmarket, and his third start was in May of his four-year-old season, a six-length score over a mile at Thirsk. So he won three times from his first three starts, by an aggregate margin of 14 and a half lengths, and in the only events he contested in his entire career that were not Group 1s. On his fourth start, he was third to So You Think in the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes at Ascot, he failed by just half a length to beat Nathaniel in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes just 17 days later, and then chased home the great Frankel in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. He was again trounced by that superstar when runner-up in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes, failed by just a head to beat the prolific Group 1 star Moonlight Cloud in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, and then returned as a five-year-old to take the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes and Group 1 Champion Stakes, his only outings that year.
The Dalham Hall Stud resident is a full-brother to Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes winner Racing History and he is out of Gonbarda (by Lando), who won the Group 1 Deutschlandpreis and Group 1 Preis von Europa. Her full-brother Gorlor is a pattern-placed stakes winner in Germany, her half-sister Gonfilia (by Big Shuffle) won the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom, and that one's full-brother Gonlargo was a classic-placed Group 3 scorer in Germany.
Their unraced dam, Gonfalon (by Slip Anchor), could be described as being a three-parts sister to Gryada (by Shirley Heights), and in addition to being the pattern-placed dam of Fame And Glory (by Montjeu), her pattern-winning descendants feature Legatissimo (by Danehill Dancer). Many will automatically associate Fame And Glory with his victory in the Group 1 Gold Cup at Ascot, but he won the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud as a juvenile, took the Irish Derby shortly after chasing home Sea The Stars at Epsom, and his six pattern wins at around 10 furlongs included a seven-length score in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and five-length wins in the Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial and Group 3 Mooresbridge Stakes. Fame And Glory is a National Hunt sire at Grange Stud, his oldest progeny are juveniles, and his top-priced sales horse, at the time of writing, is a colt who made 65,000gns from Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2015. Legatissimo, who is out of a full-sister to Fame And Glory, was champion three-year-old filly last year when she won the Group 1 1000 Guineas, Group 1 Matron Stakes and Group 1 Nassau Stakes, was pipped in the Group 1 Oaks at Epsom, and also runner-up in both the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes and Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Goonda (by Darshaan), who is also slightly closer than just a half-sister to Gonfalon and Gryada, is the dam of six-furlong juvenile Group 2 scorer Global Dream (by Seattle Dancer) and of pattern-winning miler Global Thrill (by Big Shuffle), and her stakes-winning grand-daughters include Group 2-placed pattern scorer Goathemala (by Black Sam Bellamy). Grimpola (by Windwurf), the third dam of Farhh, won the Group 2 Schwarzgold-Rennen (German 1000 Guineas) and was a full-sister to Grimbeau, a nine and a half furlong stakes winner who was blacktype-placed over 12. Being an impressive July-winning juvenile and son of Pivotal, there is every reason to hope that some of Farhh's progeny will be effective as two-year-olds, and that he could get some talented milers and middle-distance horses among his three-year-olds and older horses. FARHH (GB) – b.2008 – Pivotal – Gonbarda, 5 wins inc Champion Stakes (Gr1), Lockinge Stakes (Gr1), 2nd Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr1), Coral-Eclipse Stakes (Gr1), Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr1), Sussex Stakes (Gr1), 3rd Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr1).
