Yorton Farm Stud resident Universal is one of a growing number of stallion sons for leading international sire Dubawi (by Dubai Millennium) and so is by the sire of classic winner and classic sire Makfi. There are 33 known members of his first crop and a glance at the identities of their dams suggests that he will be dual-purpose in focus. Dubawi's jumpers feature the triple Grade 1 star Dodging Bullets. A high-class middle-distance horse, Universal is out of Winesong (by Giant's Causeway), who was only placed but is a half-sister to Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Seazun (by Zieten). His grandam, Sunset Cafe (by Red Sunset), is a winning full-sister to Group 1-placed Group 3 Prix Foy scorer Beeshi and so a half-sister to several mares from whom stakes and pattern winners descended, many of them sprinters or milers. Petit Eclair (by Major Portion) was the dam of Group 2 Prix Dollar winner and Group 1 Champion Stakes runner-up Insatiable (by Don't Forget Me), of pattern-placed stakes winner Madame Run (by Run The Gantlet), and also of Annsfield Lady (by Red Sunset), the mare from whom the speedy pattern winners Pipe Major (by Tirol), Galeota (by Mujadil), Brown Sugar (by Tamayuz) and Burnt Sugar (by Lope De Vega) descend. Black Crow (by Sea Hawk II) is the grandam of the strikingly contrasting pair Jardines Lookout (by Fourstars Allstar) and Classic Ruler (by Dominion). The former won the Group 2 Goodwood Cup and was third in both the Group 1 Gold Cup and the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. The latter won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes and was fourth in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes. Milk And Honey (by So Blessed) was the dam of the Group 2-placed middle-distance Group 3 scorer Compton Bolter (by Red Sunset), and she is the grandam of the Group 3 Winter Derby winner Sri Diamond (by Sri Pekan), but she is also the grandam of Group 3 Gladness Stakes and Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes winner Bezelle (by Dominion) and of the multiple pattern-winning miler Iftiraas (by Distant Relative). The fourth of Sunset Cafe's notable sisters is Olderfleet (by Steet Heart). Her prolific son Runaway (by Godswalk) was runner-up in the Group 3 Norfolk Stakes, her daughter Peace Girl (by Dominion) won the Group 3 Curragh Stakes as a juvenile, and that filly's descendants include juvenile champion and leading miler Toormore (by Arakan), dual juvenile Group 2 scorer Estidhkaar (by Dark Angel) and the high-class stayer Hawridge Prince (by Polar Falcon). The Grade 2-winning miler Mr Napper Tandy (by Bahamian Bounty) also descends from Olderfleet. Universal did not win until August of his three-year-old season, and so some of his progeny may need time, despite the amount of speed and precocity that appears in his family. UNIVERSAL (IRE) – ch.2009 – Dubawi – Winesong, 7 wins inc Princess of Wales's Stakes (Gr2), Jockey Club Stakes (Gr2), John Porter Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Hardwicke Stakes (Gr2). Sire in UK.
