New Year's Day a juvenile Grade 1 winner by Street Cry

NEW YEAR'S DAY (USA) - 2011 bay horse

This Hill 'N' Dale Farms stallion won the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, he was top-weighted at 126lbs on the Experimental Free Handicap, but lost out to Shared Belief for the Eclipse Award as champion two-year-old. He is by the influential Street Cry (by Machiavellian) - whose stallion sons include Street Ssnse and Street Boss - he covered 77 mares in his first season and 98 in his second.

He is out of the Grade 2 Bonnie Miss Stakes and Grade 2 Davona Dale Stakes heroine Justwhistledixie (by Dixie Union) and that makes him a half-brother to the $2.2 million Keeneland September Yearling Sale graduate and notable runner Mohaymen (by Tapit).

That grey has won five of his nine starts and earned just short of $1 million, so far. He took the Grade 2 Nashua Stakes and Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at two, has won both the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes and Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes this year, and he was fourth to Nyquist in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby in May.

Justwhistledixie is a half-sister to the Grade 2 Prioress Stakes winner and Grade 1 Test Stakes runner-up Penny's Reshoot (by Turkey Shoot) and their four other stakes-winning siblings include Twin Propeller (by Known Fact), the grandam of Smooth Air (by Smooth Jazz) and Overdriven (by Tale Of The Cat).

The latter won the Grade 2 Sanford Stakes over six furlongs at Saratoga, from just three starts, he went to stud in Florida and he is a leading freshman sire there in 2016. Smooth Air, on the other hand, won six of his 17 starts and earned over $1.1 million, getting his best wins in the Grade 2 Ohio Derby, Grade2 Hutcheson Stakes and Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap. He was runner-up in the Grade 1 Florida Derby and Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, he went to stud in Louisiana, and has sired winners from a small number of runners.

There are also plenty of stakes and graded winners to be found under the fourth generation and its branches, including 2010's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf heroine Shared Account (by Pleasantly Perfect), whose third dam, Tiy (by Nalees Man) is the fourth dam of New Year's Day.
