Animal Kingdom has strong European roots

ANIMAL KINGDOM (USA) - 2008 chestnut horse

The US champion three-year-old of 2011 won five of his dozen starts, was runner-up in another five of them, and he earned just short of $8.4 million. A large chunk of those earnings came from his victory in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup, at the age of five, and this great-grandson of Blushing Groom (by Red God) has been very popular since retiring to Jonabell Farm in Kentucky. He covered 148 mares in his first season and 137 in his second.
 
One of the things that makes him a particularly interesting member of this group of stallions is the strong European influence in his pedigree.

His sire, Leroidesanimaux (by Candy Stripes) is from the immediate family of Banstead Manor Stud's outstanding stallion Dansili (by Danehill), and after several years in Kentucky and Florida, the Brazilian-born US star joined the team at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket. His first European-sired offspring are yearlings.

Animal Kingdom is the best of several winners out of German Group 3 scorer Dalicia (by Acatenango) and that mare, whose siblings include the dam of German listed scorer and US Grade 2 Ballston Spa Stakes winner Daveron (by Black Sam Bellamy), is a grand-daughter of Diasprina (by Aspros). That mare won one of Germany's top juvenile contests and was later placed in the Oppenheim-Rennen and Preis von Koln.
 
Diasprina was also the dam of the Group 2 Henkel-Rennen (German 1000 Guineas) heroine Diacada (by Cadeaux Genereux), of Group 3 Grosser Preis von Berlin scorer Desidera (by Shaadi) and of talented sprinter Diable (by Big Shuffle), and her string of blacktype descendants include the classic-placed stakes winner Dickens (by Kallisto).
 
Although he stands in Kentucky, Animal Kingdom looks a likely candidate to have quite a few representatives racing in Europe. He ran twice as a two-year-old, winning a nine furlong maiden special weight at Keeneland, so any juvenile winners he has here may emerge mostly in the latter half of the season. An interesting prospect.
