Winner on the second of his two starts as a juvenile and a Group 2 scorer at the age of three, Al Kazeem was one of the best older horses in training in 2013 when he reeled off a Group 1 hat-trick and was placed in two other of the season's top races.
He was retired to the Royal Studs in Norfolk but had fertility trouble, was withdrawn from service in early May and there are just 20 known offspring in his first crop: 10 colts and 10 fillies. He returned to training, won the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes, was only beaten by a neck by Noble Mission in the Group 1 Champion Stakes, and then came back again at the age of five, winning the Group 2 Prix d'Harcourt, chasing home Cirrus Des Aigles in the Group 1 Prix Ganay and beating Fascinating Rock by a neck in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, a race he had won two years before.
Al Kazeem is now at his owner John Deer's Oakgrove Stud. Three of his foals were offered for sale in Newmarket in December, making 70,000gns, 45,000gns and a buy-back at 60,000gns, and his first yearling to go through the ring is a colt who made €360,000 in the opening session of the Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, consigned by Newsells Park Stud.
Al Kazeem is a son of outstanding Dalham Hall Stud stallion Dubawi (by Dubai Millennium), whose first sons with runners are the classic sire Makfi and blacktype sire Poet's Voice. Kazeem (by Darshaan), an unraced full-sister to the Grade 2-placed colt Treasurer, is out of Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes winner and Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks runner-up Kanz (by The Minstrel). The next dam is the prolific Treasure Chest (by Rough 'n Tumble) and that makes Kanz a half-sister to Grade 3 scorer Diomedia (by Sea Bird II), to multiple stakes winner Gold Treasure (by Northern Dancer), to Grade 3-placed Crown Treasure (by Graustark), and to four non-winners who went on to become the ancestor of some very notable runners. Diomedia's son Media Starguest (by Be My Guest) won the Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes and was fourth in the Grade 1 Arlington Million, while Gold Treasure is the grandam of the Group 1 Oaks d'Italia winner Zanzibar (by In The Wings) and also the third dam of Grade 1-placed Grade 2 scorer Spice Route (by King's Best). Crown Treasure's sons Diamond Shoal (by Mill Reef) and Glint Of Gold (by Mill Reef) were middle-distance champions who won nine Group 1s between them, but like most sons of their great sire, both disappointed at stud. The former's top-level wins came in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Gran Premio di Milano and Grosser Preis von Berlin, he was runner-up in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and third in the St Leger. Glint Of Gold, on the other hand, won the Grand Prix de Paris, Grosser Preis von Baden, Preis von Europa, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Derby Italiano and Gran Criterium, he was runner-up in the Coronation Cup and St Leger, chased home Shergar in the Derby, and was third in the King George. Crown Treasure's descendants also include the Group 1-winning mare Catella (by Generous) and the talented sprinter Hitchens (by Acclamation), the Group 1 July Cup third whose wins include the Group 3 Al Shindagha Sprint and two editions of the Group 3 Greenlands Stakes. The other mares alluded to are Carefully Hidden (by Caro), who is the dam of Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner Ensconse (by Lyphard); Miss Treasure (by Candy Spots), who is the fourth dam of Grade 1 Gamely Breeders' Cup Stakes winner Shining Energy (by Rahy); Frontinian (by Buckpasser), who is the dam of Group 1-placed Group 2 Park Hill Stakes winner I Want To Be (by Roberto), grandam of classic-placed Group 1 scorer Armiger (by Rainbow Quest) and third dam of juvenile Group 1 winner Law Enforcement (by Lawman); and Noble Treasure (by Vaguely Noble), the fourth dam of Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes winner and Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Penkenna Princess (by Pivotal). Al Kazeem will not have as many representatives as will most of his cohorts, but he was a top-class racehorse, he is well-bred, and there is every reason to hope that he can get some pattern and even Group 1 progeny. AL KAZEEM (GB) – b.2008 – Dubawi – Kazeem, 10 wins inc Coral-Eclipse Stakes (Gr1), Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr1), Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr1-twice), Jockey Club Stakes (Gr2), Prix d'Harcourt (Gr2), Gordon Richards Stakes (Gr3), Winter Hill Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Irish Champion Stakes (Gr1), Champion Stakes (Gr1), Prix Ganay (Gr1), Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr2), Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial (Gr3), St Simon Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr1).
