Buratino began his career on 28 March 2015, the opening day of that season, and made a winning debut at Chelmsford. Just over two months after that he showed himself to be a better than the typical early juvenile as, having beaten Gifted Master over six furlongs at Newmarket and then been trounced by King Of Rooks in the Listed National Stakes over five furlongs at Sandown, he bolted home by six lengths in the Listed Woodcote Stakes at Epsom. Ten days later he proved that markedly better effort was no fluke as he extended his unbeaten record over six furlongs to three with a two-length defeat of subsequent juvenile champion Air Force Blue in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. With his pedigree and the current fashion for early juvenile speed in prospective stallions, it was all but certain from that day that a career at stud awaited him. His only subsequent starts that season resulted in defeats, but they were a third place finish to Air Force Blue in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh and a half-length defeat by Shalaa in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, and Timeform rated him 118. Like his most famous relation, Buratino's three-year-old season was a disappointment: fourth behind Quiet Reflection in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes easily the best of his five runs. That notable family member is Danehill Dancer (by Danehill), the dual juvenile Group 1 star who went on to become an influential classic sire. Danehill Dancer's siblings include juvenile Group 3 scorer Unilateral (by Rock of Gibraltar) and the listed race winners Colossus (by Danehill) and Adonesque (by Sadler's Wells). The latter, who won the Listed Blue Wind Stakes and finished third in the Group 3 Meld Stakes, is the dam of Buratino's stakes-placed dam Bergamask (by Kingmambo). Buratino is a son of the Group 1 star and leading international sire Exceed And Excel (by Danehill), whose early stallion sons include Excelebration (sire of Group 1 winner Barney Roy) and Helmet (sire of Group 1 winner Thunder Snow). This makes him quite closely related to Danehill Dancer, so it was no surprise that he proved popular in his first season. There are 76 foals registered in his first crop, and he looks likely to get his best winners in the five to 10-furlong range. BURATINO (IRE) – ch.2013 – Exceed And Excel – Bergamsk, 4 wins inc Coventry Stakes (Gr2), Woodcote Stakes (L), 2nd Middle Park Stakes (Gr1), National Stakes (L), 3rd Phoenix Stakes (Gr1). He is by the sire of Helmet, who got his first top-level winner when Thunder Snow ran away with the Group 1 Criterium International over seven furlongs at Saint-Cloud on Sunday, and he is a full-brother to a pattern-winning sprinter in Australia. That one is Believe'n'Succeed and she is the dam of Bounding (by Lonhro), a prolific blacktype scorer from five and a half to seven furlongs in Australia and New Zealand, including the Group 1 Railway Stakes over six furlongs at Ellerslie, and she has been classic-placed at a mile. Their dam, Arctic Drift (by Gone West), won once and is out of the top US filly November Snow (by Storm Cat), winner of the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes and Grade 1 Test Stakes, both at Saratoga, and a full-sister to Grade 3 winner and somewhat successful blacktype sire Scatmandu. Kuroshio was a Group 3 scorer at two and a Group 2 winner at three, and with the European mares he has covered, this well-connected sprinter should be capable of getting some sprinters and milers. There are currently two major branches of the Danzig (by Northern Dancer) sire line – Green Desert and Danehill – and early signs that a third one, via War Front, may be emerging. Rathasker Stud stallion Bungle Inthejungle is a son of leading Australian sire Exceed And Excel (by Danehill) and, with 119 mares covered in his first season, he was among the busiest members of this cohort of stallions.
The early Exceed And Excel stallions include Excelebration and Helmet, multiple Group 1-winning racehorses whose first juveniles showed promise in 2016. The latter got his first winner at the highest level when Thunder Snow came home five lengths clear of his closest pursuer in the Group 1 Criterium International over seven furlongs at Saint-Cloud today. The Exceed And Excel stallions also include the Australian Group 2 scorer Kuroshio, who, like Bungle Inthejungle, has his first foals in Europe this year. Rated 110 on the official handicap at two, and 109 by Timeform, his best form came that season when he won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood and the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot, between which he was a half-length runner-up to Sir Prancealot in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster.
Inbred 4x4x4 to Northern Dancer (by Nearctic), Bungle Inthejungle is one of nine winners out of the dual scorer Licence To Thrill (by Wolfhound) and that makes him a half-brother to the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen Stakes winner Muarrab (by Oasis Dream), a full-brother to listed scorer Waveband, and a half-brother to the pattern-placed pair Group Therapy (by Choisir) and Classic Encounter (by Lujain).
His grandam is Crime Of Passion (by Dragonara Palace), who won the Group 3 Cherry Hinton Stakes, was runner-up in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes and third in the Group 1 Prix Robert Papin, and her descendants also include the pattern-placed sprint stakes winner Maltese Falcon (by Mark of Esteem). Primula Boy (by Sallust), who won the Listed Ayr Gold Cup, was a half-brother to Crime Of Passion and their siblings also include The Queen of Soul (by Chief Singer), dam of the pattern-placed stakes winner Ella (by Brief Truce), grandam of Group 1-placed pattern scorer Dobby Road (by Grape Tree Road) and more distant ancestor of the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) winner Style Vendome (by Anabaa), whose first yearlings were on offer in 2016. Bungle Inthejungle will be expected to get some early juveniles, and it is likely that most of his best progeny will be sprinters, but with some of the mares from whom his first crop have been born, some of them may be effective at around a mile. BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE (GB) – b.2010 – Exceed And Excel – Licence To Thrill, 4 wins inc Cornwallis Stakes (Gr3), Molecomb Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Flying Childers Stakes (Gr2). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2016.
