FIRST FOALS

Group 2 winner Gregorian represents Danehill line

1/11/2016

GREGORIAN (IRE) - 2009 grey horse
Like Es Que Love, who also has his first foals this year, Gregorian is a Group 2-winning son of the classic miler Clodovil (by Danehill). Both were bred by Rathasker Stud, both are members of that farm's stallion roster, although Gregorian stands for them at the National Stud in Newmarket. He covered 119 mares in his first season.

He won a seven-furlong Doncaster maiden on the last of three starts as a juvenile, he won twice at three and was placed in both the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat and Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes, and got his best results at the ages of four and five, rated 122 by Timeform in both those campaigns.

In addition to his Group 1 mile placings at three, the grey was also placed in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes and in the Group 1 July Cup. His best wins came in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes over seven at Newbury, in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes over the same trip at Newmarket, and in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes over the extended mile at Epsom.
This grandson of Danehill (by Danzig) is a full-brother to the stakes-placed filly Manderley and he is out of Three Days In May (by Cadeaux Genereux), a winning half-sister to the Group 1-placed dual stakes-winning sprinter Balmont Mast (by Balmont).

Her siblings also include the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes runner-up Crazee Mental (by Magic Ring) and that grand-daughter of Green Desert (by Danzig) is best-known as being the dam of Premio Loco (by Prized). A five-times Group 2-scorer whom Timeform rated 122 at his peak, that gelding's record also includes Group 1 placings in the Lockinge Stakes and Sussex Stakes.

Corn Futures (by Nomination), the winning grandam of Gregorian, was a half-sister to the dam of the Group 2-placed stakes winner and leading National Hunt sire Midnight Legend (by Night Shift), and the next dam, Hay Reef (by Mill Reef), could be described as being a three-parts sister to the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas scorer Wassl. Like most by his great sire, he was a poor stallion.

Wassl's dam, Hayloft (by Tudor Melody), was a half-sister to Hay Reef. She won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes, was third in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, and her descendants also include the dual Group 1-winning sprinter Twilight Son (by Kyllachy), who will stand at Cheveley Park Stud in 2017, Group 1-placed pattern scorer and Throckmorton Court Stud stallion Music Master (by Piccolo), whose first foals will arrive in the spring, and the prolific Group 1 star and multiple South African champion What A Winter (by Western Winter).

Es Que Love a Group 2 winner for Danehill sire line

31/10/2016

Picture
ES QUE LOVE (IRE) - 2009 brown horse
By a classic-winning son of Danehill (by Danzig), Es Que Love represents one of the most powerful male lines in Europe, although is an early stallion son for his sire, Clodovil. That grey won the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, has sired two winners at the highest level, and also has the Group 2 scorer Gregorian as a son with first foals in 2016.

Es Que Love won over five furlongs in late May of his two-year-old season, earned his first piece of blacktype when runner-up to Slade Power in the Listed Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock, and his first blacktype success at the age of five. That was a neck defeat of Toormore in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs at Goodwood.
His overall tally was just five wins and 14 places from 51 starts, the latter included second in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes, third in the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes and third in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes, and Timeform rated him 118.

Es Que Love stands alongside his sire at Rathasker Stud, he covered 68 mares in his first season, and represents a prolific blacktype family. His dam, Es Que (by Inchinor), got her only win in France as a three-year-old and her progeny also include the Grade 1 Hong Kong Vase winner Dominant (by Cacique) and stakes-placed Zhui Feng (by Invincible Spirit).

His grandam Bellona (by Bering), who won the Listed Prix Rose de Mai and was third in the Group 3 Prix Penelope, is also the grandam of the listed scorer Glorious Sinndar (by Sinndar), and his third dam is the Group 3 Prix de Royaumont winner Bellarida (by Bellypha), a mare whose progeny also include pattern-placed stakes winner Bayourida (by Slew O' Gold) and Group 3 Prix de Flore scorer In Clover (by Inchinor).

The latter, who is closely related to Es Que, is the dam of the listed race winning full-sisters Dream Clover (by Oasis Dream) and Incahoots, but is better known as being the dam of the Group 1 Prix de l'Opera heroine We Are (by Dansili). That high-class filly has a similar pedigree to that of Es Que Love as they are both by sons of Danehill and have dams that are closely related.

Also of note under the third generation of the family is Noyelles (by Docksider) as that half-sister to Bellona and In Clover is the dam of the Group 3 Chartwells Fillies' Stakes winner and Group 1 Matron Stakes runner-up Lily's Angel (by Dark Angel) and of the Group 2-placed stakes winner Zurigha (by Cape Cross).

Es Que Love looks likely to get his best results in the six to 10-furlong range, mostly with three-year-olds and older horses. Some will win at two, of course, but he won just one from nine at that age, he improved with age, and the aptitude of his juveniles will likely depend on what the mare contributes.

ES QUE LOVE (IRE) – br.2009 – Clodovil – Es Que, 5 wins inc Lennox Stakes (Gr2), 2nd Abernant Stakes (Gr3), Sandy Lane Stakes (L), 3rd Duke of York Stakes (Gr2), Hackwood Stakes (Gr3). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2016.
