SCISSOR KICK (AUS) - 2011 bay horse

Talented Australian sprinter Scissor Kick is a son of champion sire Redoute's Choice (by Danehill) and so is by the sire of leading Australian stallion Snitzel. He covered his first book of mares in his native land, started the European phase of his career Haras d'Etreham, in France, and has 33 registered foals in the northern hemisphere half of that global first crop.

He is a full-brother to the pattern-placed stakes winner Sharkbite, who has sired some winners and blacktype horses, but more notable is that his dam, Back Pass (by Quest For Fame), is a winning half-sister to Group 1-placed Grade 2 scorer Three Valleys (by Diesis) and so is out of Skiable (by Niniski), the stakes-placed half-sister to the phenomenal broodmare Hasili (by Kahyasi).

A stakes winner in France and a full-sister to listed scorer Arrive, Hasili is the dam of the Group/Grade 1 stars Banks Hill (by Danehill), Cacique (by Danehill), Champs Elysees (by Danehill), Heat Haze (by Green Desert) and Intercontinental (by Danehill) and also of the Group 1-placed pattern scorers Deluxe (by Storm Cat) and Dansili (by Danehill), the latter now retired from active service but long recognised as being one of Europe's outstanding stallions.

Cacique and Champs Elysees have also enjoyed success at stud, and Banks Hill is the dam of the Group 1 star Romantica (by Galileo) and of Group 2-placed stakes winner and successful South African sire Ideal World (by Kingmambo).

Dissemble (by Ahonoora), a half-sister to Hasili, is the dam of triple Grade 1 winning miler Leroidesanimaux (by Candy Stripes), who is the sire of Grade 1 Kentucky Derby hero and promising young sire Animal Kingdom. Arrive, of course, is the dam of the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes winner Promising Lead (by Danehill).

There are many other group/graded winners to be found under these first few generations of the family, including Jet Away (by Cape Cross) whose first crop will be three in 2019. And if you go back another step then you will find Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Sookera (by Roberto), dam of the Group 1-winning sprinter So Factual (by Known Fact) and fourth dam of Scissor Kick.

All of this makes Scissor Kick an intriguing addition to the European stallion ranks and identifies him as a potential source of some smart sprinters and milers.

PROTECTIONIST (GER) - 2010 bay horse

Multi-millionaire and dual Group 1 star Protectionist began his stallion career at Gestut Rottgen in Germany. He was a Group 2-winning stayer in his native land before winning the Group 1 Melbourne Cup over two miles at Flemington.

An extended stay in Australia did not work out for him so he returned to Europe in 2016 and added two more pattern wins to his tally, notably his two and a half length defeat of Nightflower in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin over 12 furlongs at Hoppegarten.

Protectionist is a son of the great German stallion Monsun (by Konigsstuhl) and so is by the sire of the successful sires Manduro, Samum and Shirocco, each of whom have sired several Group/Grade 1 winners on the flat.

His dam is out of the listed scorer Parisienne (by Distant Relative) and what is most striking about her is that she is by the runaway Arc hero Peintre Celebre (by Nureyev) and from the female line that produced that star.

Their common ancestor is the stakes winner Plencia (by Le Haar) whose brilliant daughter Pawneese (by Carvin II) was a half-sister to Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes scorer Petroleuse (by Habitat). The latter is the grandam of Peintre Celebre, while the King George, Oaks and Prix de Diane (French Oaks) heroine Pawneese is the fourth dam of Protectionist.

He was pattern placed from just two starts as a juvenile and is standing in a country that has little two-year-old racing, so it is likely that it will be 2021 before we start to see the best of Protectionist's first crop emerge, when they are three-year-olds tackling middle-distances.

MORANDI (FR) - 2010 grey horse

A runaway Group 1 winner at two who went on to be classic-placed at three, Morandi is an early stallion son of the notably successful international sire Holy Roman Emperor (by Danehill). He is a half-brother to the stakes-placed filly Vita (by Elusive City), and, like Triple Threat, he began his new career at Haras du Mont Goubert near Deauville. There are 37 registered foals in his first crop.

The grey is out of Vezina (by Bering), a full-sister to the stakes-placed Vezing and half-sister to Group 3 Prix Fille de l'Air scorer Marie De Ken (by Kendor). That talented filly has been a notable success at stud as she is the dam of the Grade 1-placed Grade 2-winning miler Charmo (by Charnwood Forest) and of Ana Marie (by Anabaa), the Group 2 Prix d'Harcourt scorer who earned placings in the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks), Group 1 Nassau Stakes and Group 1 Prix Vermeille.

Ana Marie is the dam of the Group 1-placed stakes winner Ana Americana (by American Post), while Marie Glitters (by Crystal Glitters), a half-sister to Marie De Ken and Vezina, is the dam of two listed races winners in France and of a mare whose blacktype-winning descendants include the Group 3 Prix Gontaut-Biron scorer Petit Chevalier (by High Chaparral).

Ordenstreue (by Orsini), the third dam of Morandi, was the champion three-year-old filly in Germany in 1965, when she won the Preis der Diana (German Oaks), and her string of successful runners features Dom Alaric (by Sassafras), a Canadian champion who won the Group 2 Grand Prix de Deauville before going on to win at the same level in his adopted home.

Dom Alaric was also multiple Grade 1-placed, he went to stud at Windfields Farm, and he sired a dozen individual stakes winners, along with a high proportion of winners to runners. His grandam, Ordinate (by Nebelwerfer), won the Deutsches St Leger in 1959.

MARTINBOROUGH (JPN) - 2009 bay/brown horse

Martinborough was a late addition to the stallion ranks for 2017 but this dual 10-furlong Japanese Grade 3 scorer, who began his new career at Haras de Grandcamp in France, has a pedigree that makes him an interesting prospect and he has 40 registered foals in his first crop.

He is a son of the brilliant racehorse and outstanding stallion Deep Impact (by Sunday Silence), whose early stallion sons have been showing promise in Japan, he is a full-brother to the Grade 3 scorer Frere Jacques, and a half-brother to Halwa Sweet (by Machiavellian), the winning dam of the multiple classic-placed dual Group 1 mile heroine Verxina (by Deep Impact).

His dam, Halwa Song (by Nureyev), is an unraced half-sister to the listed scorer Emirates To Dubai (by Storm Cat) and to Mezzo Soprano (by Darshaan), the Group 1 Prix Vermeille star whose offspring include the dual Group 2-placed middle-distance pattern winner Claremont (by Sadler's Wells).

Morn Of Song (by Rahy), the grandam of Martinborough, won three times and, in addition to being a full-sister to the Group 1-placed Grade 2 scorer and leading sire Rahy, she is a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 star and major sire Singspiel (by In The Wings).

Her siblings also include Rakeen (by Northern Dancer), who was a Grade 1-placed Grade 2 scorer in South Africa before going on to stallion success in that country, as well the mares who gave us the Group 1 winners Danon Chantilly (by Fuji Kiseki) and Campanologist (by Kingmambo).

The third dam of Martinborough is the Grade 1 star and champion Glorious Song (by Halo), who was a full-sister to the champion juvenile and successful sire Devil's Bag and also to blacktype scorer and leading sire Saint Ballado.

There are many other notable individuals in the various branches of this famous family, but just those mentioned are more than enough to show that, with the right mares, this new stallion could sire some highly talented offspring.

MANATEE (GB) - 2011 bay horse

Stallion sons of the great German sire Monsun (by Konigsstuhl) are achieving some excellent results in both the flat and National Hunt sectors and Manatee is among the most recent to take up a berth at stud.

The Darley-bred six-year-old was trained by Andre Fabre, his final start was when finishing fourth to Silverwave in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, and his four wins feature the Group 2 Grand Prix de Chantilly and Group 2 Prix du Conseil de Paris.

He began his new career at Haras de Hoguenot, in France, and there are 39 registered foals in his first crop.

Manatee is out of the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes winner Galatee (by Galileo), that makes him a half-brother to listed scorer Gaterie (by Dubai Destination) and, more notably, to Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes winner Dartmouth (by Dubawi).

Dartmouth beat Highland Reel by a head that day, was third to that same globetrotting star in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes the following month, and rounded off the season with a one-length second to Erupt in the Grade 1 Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine. He covered 61 mares in his initial season at Shade Oak Stud his first foals will arrive in 2019.

Galatee is the better of two winners out of Altana (by Mountain Cat), an unplaced daughter of the Group 2-placed runner and notable broodmare Albertine (by Irish River), whose star son is the French-trained champion Arcangues (by Sagace), the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan scorer who sprang a record 133/1 shock in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic in 1993.

His half-sister Agathe (by Manila) won the Group 3 Prix de Psyche and was runner-up in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) before going on to fame at stud where she became the dam of dual US Grade 1 star Artiste Royal (by Danehill), of Group 1-placed Australian stakes winner Annenkov (by Danehill) and, best of all, Aquarelliste (by Danehill).

That champion won the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks), Group 1 Prix Ganay and Group 1 Prix Vermeille, she chased home Sakhee in the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and was runner-up to Ange Gabriel in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase.

Afrique Bleu Azur (by Sagace), a winning full-sister to Arcangues, also did her bit for the family as she was the dam of Cape Verdi (by Caerleon), the filly who was so impressive when beating subsequent Oaks heroine Shahtoush by five lengths in the Group 1 1000 Guineas that she was sent off favourite for the Group 1 Derby at Epsom. She failed to stay the trip and came home ninth to High-Rise.

ISFAHAN (GER) - 2013 chestnut horse

When asked to name an influential son of Shirley Heights (by Mill Reef) most will automatically say Darshaan. The classic star was a prolific source of top-class racehorses, his stallion sons include Mark of Esteem and Dalakhani, and his daughters have long been prized as broodmares.

The 64 stakes winning offspring of 1978's dual Derby hero, which represented 9.2% of his progeny, also included a champion freshman sire who, despite siring just six blacktype scorers of his own at stud, left a notable legacy. Group 2 Tattersalls Gold Cup hero Elegant Air died young but he was the sire of Dashing Blade, who represented his first crop.

Bred by Jeff Smith's Littleton Stud, Dashing Blade won both the Group 1 National Stakes and Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes in 1989, he was Ireland's juvenile champion and he went on to add both the Group 2 Prix Eugene Adam and the Group 1 Gran Premio d'Italia before heading to stud. He spent one season at his owner-breeder's farm and then moved to Gestut Etzean in Germany from where he became a multiple champion sire.

Dashing Blade was retired from stallion duties early in 2013, he died several months later, and his 54 stakes winners include four who have won at the highest level, headed by classic-placed Group 1 star and leading young sire Lord Of England.

That Gestut Etzean stallion has two Group 1 winners to his name so far, both of them classic stars: Preis der Diana (German Oaks) winner Feodora and Deutsches Derby hero Isfahan. The latter, a lightly-raced triple pattern scorer, was not seen out again after his classic success in heavy ground at Hamburg in mid- July of his three-year-old season.

Isfahan is a half-brother to the mile pattern winner Incantator (by Areion) and he could be described as being a three-parts brother to the Group 3 Bavarian Classic runner-up Il Divo (by Dashing Blade). Their dam, an unraced mare called Independent Miss (by Polar Falcon), is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Invincible Hero (by Lomitas).

His dam is, in turn, out of a winning daughter of Group 1 Arak-Pokal heroine and 1990's German three-year-old filly champion Indica (by Athenagoras) and that makes the grandam of Isfahan a half-sister to the Group 3 Furstenberg-Rennen scorer Indikator (by Sillery).

If you go back farther then you will find that Isfahan's fifth dam is the smart Inga (by Birkhahn), who was a full-sister to 1965's Preis der Diana (German Oaks) winner Indra (dam of classic-placed champion Indian Pearl, by Gulf Pearl), and his seventh dam is 1939's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) winner and multiple classic producer Yonne (by Indus).

Isfahan's is a German classic winner from a family that has a long-established classic tradition and this young descendant of Shirley Heights has proved popular in his new role at Gestut Ohlerwriherhof, reportedly covering 89 mares in his first season.

GOKEN (FR) - 2012 bay horse

Kendargent (by Kendor) has been something of a surprise success at stud and his high-class sprinting son Goken began his stallion career at Haras de la Huderie in France. There are 51 registered foals in his first crop.

He was third to Profitable in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes in June and was a pattern winner both two and three years of age. Goken was also one of the most precocious juveniles of 2014 and, having been runner-up on his debut, he was an eight-length winner over five furlongs at Chantilly in mid-April and a six-length winner over the same course and distance a month later. He then completed a hat-trick there with a two-length score in the Group 3 Prix du Bois in late June.

He finished fourth behind Kool Kompany in the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin and fourth to The Wow Signal in the Group 1 Prix Morny, was unplaced against the older horses in the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp and then finished third to Mattmu in the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte over six furlongs on very soft ground.

The following year he added wins in the Group 3 Prix Texanita over five and a half furlongs at that latter venue and a six-furlong listed contest on the polytrack at Lingfield, earning a Timeform rating of 113.

Goken is the first foal of Gooseley Chope (by Indian Rocket), a winning daughter of Gooseley Lane, who had the distinction of being one of just two stakes winners for the Danzig (by Northern Dancer) stallion Pyramus. These are the highlights of the first three generations of the pedigree, which makes this young member of the stallion ranks an unknown prospect.

EXOSPHERE (AUS) - 2012 bay horse

Top Australian sprinters have proved both popular and successful as stallions in Europe and Exosphere is among the latest to make the trip north. The Group 1-winning son of leading sire Lonhro (by Octagonal) is a Darley horse, he stood at Haras du Logis in France in 2017, and there are 21 registered foals in his first crop.

His unraced dam Altitude (by Danzero) is out of the stakes-placed Highest (by Marscay) and that mare is, in turn, a half-sister to the Group 1-placed multiple stakes winner Tell Me Straight (by Is It True). Their Group 1-placed half-sister Serious Matter (by Carry A Smile) is the dam of two stakes winners and grandam of a Group 3 scorer.

Consular Belle (by Pro Consul), the stakes-winning third dam of Exosphere, won 11 times from 49 starts and that Canadian-bred grand-daughter of multiple champion sire Vice Regent (by Northern Dancer) was out of a winning full-sister to the talented Canadian sprinter-miler Stacy Mckay (by Dance To Market).

His pedigree makes him something of an unknown as a stallion prospect, but it will be fascinating to see how he fares in this part of the world.

BOW CREEK (IRE) - 2011 bay horse

One of the first stallion sons of Shamardal (by Giant's Causeway) is notable Group 1 sire Lope De Vega and that augurs well for the prospects of Bow Creek, a member of the team at Haras du Logis.

He won two of his seven starts as a juvenile but improved considerably at the age of three, taking both the Group 2 Boomerang Mile at Leopardstown and Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood and earning a 119 rating from Timeform. A move to Australia saw him add further Group 2 success, this time over nine furlongs at Caulfield.

Bow Creek is the best of several winners out of the Group 3 Dahlia Stakes scorer Beneventa (by Most Welcome), a mare whose dam, Dara Dee (by Dara Monarch), was a half-sister to the Group 3 Brownstown Stakes winner and Group 2 Pretty Polly Stakes third Bay Empress (by Empery).

That filly became the dam of pattern-placed listed scorer Bela-M (by Ela-Mana-Mou) and grandam of the pattern-placed stakes winners Belle Syrienne (by Golan) and Brisk Breeze (by Monsun), and she is a half-sister to the dam of the Group 2 Vintage Stakes scorer Orizaba (by Orpen).

There are also plenty of blacktype horses to be found under the various branches of the fourth generation of the family, but nothing as talented as Bow Creek was. He could become a source of useful mile to 10 furlong horses.

PROCONSUL (GB) - 2013 chestnut horse

Dual stakes-winning sprinter Kind (by Danehill) has produced six foals of whom four are stakes winners and five are stallions - a remarkable record. The one filly among them is the speedy pattern-placed dual listed race winner Joyeuse (by Oasis Dream).

That talented performer is a full-sister to the winning miler Morpheus, a sire of first-crop juvenile winners in 2018, and her half-brothers include middle-distance Group 3 scorer and as yet minor blacktype sire Bullet Train (by Sadler's Wells).

Kind's most famous son is, of course, the great Frankel (by Galileo), the undefeated Timeform 147-rated superstar whose long list of stakes winners from his first two crops is headed by runaway dual Group 1 Champion Stakes hero Cracksman. His third crop is currently headed by Grade 1-placed Group 3 winning juvenile filly East.

Frankel's triple Group 1-winning full-brother Noble Mission stands at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky and has had some promising winners among his first two-year-olds in 2018, and the sixth foal of Kind, another son of Galileo (by Sadler's Wells), is Mickley Stud's stallion Proconsul.

He is the only chestnut among the siblings, he was trained by Andre Fabre, but failed to make the frame in either of his two starts.

Kind's star sons are very closely related to her dual 10-furlong Group/Grade 1-winning half-brother Powerscourt (by Sadler's Wells), the sire of US Grade 1 winner Finnegan's Wake.

She is also a sibling of Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes winner and dual US Grade 2 scorer Riposte (by Dansili) and to the Group 1-placed pattern winner Last Train (by Rail Link), and her dam is the Group 3 Lancashire Oaks victress Rainbow Lake (by Rainbow Quest).

VADAMOS (FR) - 2011 bay horse

Vadamos began his career as a middle-distance horse and was a three-length listed scorer over 12 furlongs at Vichy, but then a crucial decision was made and his profile soared. He dropped back to a mile, and a five-length victory in the Group 2 Darley Oettingen-Rennen provided him with his first pattern success.

He kicked off his five-year-old campaign by chasing home Solow over a mile on the polytrack at Chantilly, he finished down the field behind California Chrome in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan, but then bounced back to beat Ervedya by three and a half lengths in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet on turf at Saint-Cloud.

Disappointing on heavy ground behind A Shin Hikari in the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan next time, he then took the Group 3 Prix Messidor by three lengths, was a half-length runner-up to Ribchester in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville and beat Spectre to take the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, this year run at Chantilly.

Vadamos then travelled to Australia where he ran twice, finishing fourth behind the brilliant Winx in the Group 1 William Hill Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and then fourth behind Awesome Rock in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington, both over 10 furlongs.

Vadamos is a son of the great German sire Monsun (by Konigsstuhl) and so is by the sire of the multiple Group 1 sires Manduro, Samum and Shirocco. He stands at Tally-Ho Stud in Co Westmeath, there are 108 registered foals in his first crop, and he promised to become a source of milers and middle-distance horses.

His stakes-winning dam, Celebre Vadala (by Peintre Celebre), is a half-sister to the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes and Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan star and Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) third Valixir (by Trempolino), and also to Vadaza (by Zafonic).

That stakes-placed winner has made her name at stud as she is the dam of the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary winners Vadawina (by Unfuwain) and Vazira (by Sea The Stars) and also of the dual Group 3 scorer Vadapolina (by Trempolino).

The first named of that trio is the dam of the Group 1-placed middle-distance Group 2 scorer Vadamar (by Dalakhani) and of Group 1-placed pattern scorer The Pentagon (by Galileo), while Vadapolina is the dam of Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) runner-up Veda (by Dansili).

Vadlamixa (by Linamix), grandam of Vadamos, is a stakes-winning half-sister to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile hero and classic sire Val Royal (by Royal Academy) and her siblings also include the mare from whom Group 2 scorer and young Irish-based stallion Valirann (by Nayef) and also ill-fated Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) star Valyra (by Azamour) descend.

If you go back to the fourth generation of the family then you will find a branch that leads to the incredibly lucky racehorse Vahorimix (by Linamix) – he was awarded both the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) and Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois in the stewards' room, but good fortune did not follow him to the breeding shed – and also to the Group 1 Irish St Leger heroine Voleuse De Coeurs (by Teofilo).

TWILIGHT SON (GB) - 2012 bay horse

Unbeaten in two starts as a juvenile, Twilight Son extended his winning run to five when short-heading Strath Burn in the Group 1 Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock several weeks before he chased home champion Muhaarar in the Group 1 Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot.

Timeform rated him 125, he stayed in training as a four-year-old and added the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes to his tally. He is among the early stallion sons of sprint champion Kyllachy (by Pivotal) – they also include Dragon Pulse, who has sired a lot of winners but just three blacktype scorers, so far – he has 121 registered foals in his first crop, and he looks likely to get sprinters and milers.

Twilight Son is the best among a string of multiple winners out of triple scorer Twilight Mistress (by Bin Ajwaad) and those siblings include Throckmorton Court Stud stallion Music Master (by Piccolo) who will have his first runners in 2019.

Rated 122 by Timeform, Music Master won the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury and the string of blacktype events in which he was placed included the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock, in which he finished third to G Force and Gordon Lord Byron, with Sole Power a half-length behind him in fourth.

These high-class brothers represent a big step forward for their branch of the family as you have to go back to the fourth generation to find the next stakes winner, the Group 3 Queen Mary Stakes heroine On Tiptoes (by Shareef Dancer).

That precocious filly was a half-sister to Twilight Son's third dam Penny Candle (by Be My Guest) and she is the mare from whom the talented fillies Violette (by Observatory), Silca's Gift (by Cadeaux Genereux) and Virginia Hall (by Medicean) descend.

It will be fascinating to compare the stallion careers of the two half-brothers – although it should be noted that Music Master has tiny numbers compared to his more famous sibling, so the odds are stacked very much against him.

Despite the lack of fashion in the distaff side of the family, it would be no surprise to see Twilight Son become the latest success story for Cheveley Park Stud, where he joined his sire (now retired) and grandsire on the roster and from where his great-grandsire Polar Falcon also enjoyed success as a sire.

THE LAST LION (IRE) - 2014 bay horse

Never out of the frame in 10 starts, The Last Lion began his racing career with victory in the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster in early April and finished it just under six months later with a surprise three-quarter length defeat of Blue Point in the Group 1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.

I reviewed his pedigree in detail after that win, noting the presence of Group 1 winner and successful sire Myboycharlie (by Danetime) in a branch of the fourth generation of the family and arguing that as his pedigree gave him a chance of staying a mile the following year, what would there be to lose to give it a go?

It was something of a rhetorical question but I guess the answer was this: stallion fees. He would, no doubt, have been a popular addition to the stallion ranks in 2018 regardless of how his three-year-old campaign turned out, but instead he worked his way through an initial book of mares at Kildangan Stud, and there are 40 registered foals in his first crop.

He looks likely to get mostly sprinters and milers, with some who stay a bit farther.

The Timeform 114-rated son of Choisir (by Danehill Dancer) is by the sire of Group 1 star and Group 1 sire Starspangledbanner, he is a half-brother to the stakes-winning sprinters Contest (by Danehill Dancer) and Russian Rock (by Rock of Gibraltar), and he is out of Mala Mala (by Brief Truce).

That one-time scorer finished third in both the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, she is out of the four-time scorer Breyani (by Commanche Run), who stayed two miles, and so is a half-sister to the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas and Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes heroine Tarascon (by Tirol) and to the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano winner Mister Monet (by Peintre Celebre).

THE GURKHA (IRE) - 2013 bay colt

There is a double-digit list of stallion sons of prolific champion sire Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) who have sired at least one Group/Grade 1 winner somewhere in the world – in countries listed in Part I of the International Cataloguing Standards – and it is a fair bet that The Gurkha will add his name to that list before too long.

He is a classic-winning miler from the family of a Derby hero and Group 1 sire, he stands at Coolmore Stud, and there are 102 registered foals in his first crop. He looks likely to get mostly milers and middle-distance horses.

Unraced at two, he was third in a mile maiden at Leopardstown on his debut at three, ran away with a Navan maiden over the same trip 11 days later and then took the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) by five and a half lengths at Deauville.

He was odds-on when runner-up to Galileo Gold in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes and when a half-length second to Hawkbill in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes, and his final start saw him beat his Ascot conqueror by a neck in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Timeform rated him 127.

The Gurkha is a full-brother to the pattern-placed Queen Nefertiti and his dam, Chintz (by Danehill Dancer), who won the Group 3 C L Weld Park Stakes as a two-year-old, is a half-sister to the dam of the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas runner-up Savile Row (by Makfi).

His grandam is Gold Dodger (by Slew O' Gold) and that stakes-winning daughter of Group 3 Prix Cleopatre scorer Brooklyn's Dance (by Shirley Heights) is a half-sister to five stakes winners and also to a broodmare of note.

Best of the stakes quintet is 2012's surprise Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Solemia (by Poliglote). Her three-parts brothers Prospect Wells (by Sadler's Wells) and Prospect Park (by Sadler's Wells) are Group 1-placed pattern winners, while Brooklyn's Gold (by Seeking The Gold) and Never Green (by Halling) won listed races.

The other noteworthy sibling is Brooklyn's Storm (by Storm) and it is her stakes-winning daughter Stormina (by Gulch) who gave us the classic-placed Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac and Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Silsaol (by Monsun), the joint-champion juvenile filly in France in 2012.

Brooklyn's Dance is a half-sister to the dam of Group 1 Grand Criterium scorer Okawango (by Kingmambo), to the grandam of triple Group 1 star and German champion Quijano (by Acatenango), and also to the mare who gave us 2007's Derby and Juddmonte International Stakes hero Authorized (by Montjeu).

That star has five Group 1 winners to his name, including the multiple Australian top-level star Hartnell, and his success is no surprise given that his grandam (fourth dam of The Gurkha) is Vallee Dansante (by Lyphard), a half-sister to classic hero and leading sire Green Dancer (by Nijinsky) and also to Irish Valley (by Irish River), the dam of juvenile champion and classic sire Alhaarth (by Unfuwain) and grandam of classic hero and classic sire Makfi (by Dubawi).

This is a family with an established history of producing stallions capable of siring Group 1 winners and so there is every reason to hope that classic-winning miler The Gurkha can add his name that roll of honour too.

TERRITORIES (IRE) - 2012 bay horse

One of the things that we look at when assessing the future potential of any stallion is the presence or absence of successful sires within the first few generations of his pedigree. If his relations do include one or more horses who have done well as stallions then that does not confer any sort of guarantee on him, of course, but it does boost his prospects.

In Territories we have a classic-placed Group 1 winner who was Timeform 111p-rated at two, 123 at three, and who has two major international sires in the fourth generation of his pedigree. He stands at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket and there are 92 registered foals in his first crop.

His fourth dam is the Group 1 Irish Oaks heroine Helen Street (by Troy) and she is both the dam of Australian champion sire Street Cry (by Machiavellian) and grandam of prolific international Group 1 sire Shamardal (by Giant's Causeway), who stands at Kildangan Stud in Ireland.

The latter is out of Street Cry's stakes-placed full-sister Helsinki and both she and Street Cry are somewhat closely related to Taranto (by Machiavellian), the stakes-placed dam of Territories.

Their triple-winning half-sister Grecian Slipper (by Sadler's Wells) – the third dam of Territories – is the dam of Group 3 Prix de Conde scorer Graikos (by Rainbow Quest) and of Group 3 Prix de Barbeville winner Magna Graecia (by Warning), and she is the grandam of the Group 1-placed Australian Group 2 scorer Paximadia (by Commands). Magna Graecia is, in turn, Taranto's dam.

In addition to being a high-class racehorse from the family of two major sires, Territories has the attraction of being a son of leading international sire Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert), the Irish National Stud flag bearer whose stallion sons include Lawman, I Am Invincible, and a string of blacktype-siring young stallions, including 2018 freshmen Kingman and Charm Spirit.

These are all credentials that give Territories every chance of making the grade as a sire of high-class sprinters, milers and, with the right mares, some middle-distance horses. If he lives up to his potential, then he could become a classic sire.

STRATH BURN (GB) - 2012 bay horse

The Group 2-winning sprinter Acclamation (by Royal Applause) has become a surprise source of successful stallion sons and he has a growing number of grandsons who either began stud careers of their own in 2017 and 2018 or who are already in the early years of their new careers.

The former group includes Strath Burn, who is a first stallion son for the dual Group 1-winning sprinter Equiano, the sire of top-class sprinter The Tin Man. Strath Burn stands at Bridge House Stud in Co Westmeath and there are 14 registered foals in his first crop.

He was a Timeform 106-rated and Group 2-placed juvenile, and at three he followed his Group 3 Hackwood Stakes victory with a short-head defeat by Twilight Son in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock, raising his Timeform figure to 123.

This pattern of form suggests that, although some of his progeny will be successful at two, they are likely to be better at three and older. His pedigree gives him the chance to get milers as well as sprinters.

He is the best of seven winners out of Irish Light (by Irish River), his siblings include the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes third Polar Force (by Polar Falcon), and his dam is a half-sister both to the Grade 3-placed stakes winner Solar Bound (by Boundary) and to the notable broodmare Bintalreef (by Diesis).

She is the dam of the Group 2 Futurity Stakes winner First Cornerstone (by Hurricane Run) and also of the pattern-placed dual listed scorer Buxted (by Dynaformer).

Solar Star (by Lear Fan), the grandam of Strath Burn, is a winning half-sister to the triple graded-winning sprinter Gold Land (by Gone West) and also to the dams of the speedy stakes winners Resplendent Cee (by Polar Falcon) and Pausanias (by Kyllachy), and she is out of an unraced half-sister to the dual Group 1 Lockinge Stakes hero Soviet Line (by Soviet Star).

His fourth dam is the Group 1 Oaks fourth Shore Line (by High Line), a full-sister to Group 2 Park Hill Stakes winner Quay Line and to Group 2 Premio Dormello scorer Ancholia, but Strath Burn was all about speed and it is likely that it is that quality that he will pass on to his offspring.

The early Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert) stallions include classic sire Lawman, Group 1 sire I Am Invincible and and several others who have sired stakes winners, notably 2018 freshman sires Kingman and Charm Spirit, which augurs well for the prospects of the increasing number of his sons who are taking up stud roles.

Shalaa was one of the star juveniles of 2015, a dual Group 1 winner over six furlongs, rated 123p by Timeform and looking every inch a potential Group 1 Commonwealth Cup hero of 2016. Sadly, he missed a full year off the track.

His return to action was a winning one, but although he was sent off joint-favourite for the Group 1 Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes on what was to be his final start, that outing came just two weeks later. American commentators talk of a 'bounce' effect, where the second run back after a lengthy absence can be disappointing, and that may have been a factor.

It would have been fun to see Shalaa race as a four-year-old but, instead, he joined the team at Haras de Bouquetot in France and his first book of mares included the dual Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Treve, whose daughter is one of 103 registered foals for him in 2018.

The best of several winners out of Grade 3-placed Ghurra (by War Chant), he is out of a half-sister to the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes winner Hayil (by Dayjur), to a string of blacktype earners and also to Abyat (by Shadeed), a mare whose Group 2-winning grandson Dragon Pulse (by Kyllachy) has sired a lot of mostly minor winners and just three blacktype scorers from his early crops.

Shalaa's grandam is the speedy stakes-placed winner Futuh (by Diesis) and that mare is a half-sister to the stakes-winning dam of dual Grade 1 scorer Wild Rush (by Wild Again), sire of the multiple Grade 1 stars Dream Rush, Hollywood Story, Stellar Jayne and Transcend, and of triple Canadian champion Judiths Wild Rush, among others of note.

There are many other stakes and graded winners to be found in the branches of the third generation of the family, but more eye-catching is the inbreeding in his pedigree.

The 3x3 to Danzig (by Northern Dancer) is easily apparent, but the broodmare sires of his parents are the full-brothers Kris and Diesis, thereby making him inbred 4x4 to Sharpen Up (by Atan) and to Doubly Sure (by Reliance). Sir Gaylord (by Turn-To) appears twice in the fifth generation, which is far back and will be off the chart of any of his progeny.

It is not possible to know if that will have any meaningful effect on his prospects as a stallion, although it does make it likely that quite a few of his offspring will also show some inbreeding within the first four generations of their pedigrees. Shalaa looks a likely source of high-class sprinters and milers, with some who stay 10 furlongs.

PRINCE OF LIR (IRE) - 2014 bay colt

There is an unfortunate and growing trend of retiring horses to stud after just their two-year-old season, so before they have truly proved themselves, and Prince Of Lir, who won a Beverley maiden in May, the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes in June, and then finished unplaced in three starts, is among the latest batch of them.

He stands at Ballyhane Stud, has covered large books of mares in his first two seasons, and has 75 registered foals in his first crop. Timeform rated him 105.

Prince Of Lir is the second foal out of Esuvia (by Whipper), a former Bryan Smart-trainee who won once over five furlongs and twice over six furlongs, achieving a peak handicap mark of 86. Her siblings include the five-times sprint winner Matuza (by Cadeaux Genereux), the multiple middle-distance scorer Well Painted (by Excellent Art), and also Resplendent Glory (by Namid).

The late Terry Mills trained that chestnut to win six of his nine starts, including Group 3 and listed sprints at Sandown, and from limited opportunities at stud the grandson of Indian Ridge (by Ahonoora) has sired several multiple winners, headed by his first-crop son Dreams Of Glory, a five-furlong specialist with 12 wins from 83 starts.

Aoife (by Thatching), who is the grandam of Prince Of Lir, won twice, she is responsible for seven winners from eight foals, and is a half-sister to the Group 2 King's Stand Stakes third Funny Valentine (by Cadeaux Genereux). Her siblings also include Dame Hester (by Diktat), a stakes-placed dual winner whose son Donnerschlag (by Bahamian Bounty) won a Group 2 sprint at Hamburg, in Germany.

The next dam, Aunt Hester (by Caerleon), was a winner at two and as she was out of the triple scorer Lady Hester (by Native Prince) that made her a half-sister to the Group 2-placed Group 3 Prix Daphnis winner L'Irresponsable (by Ile de Bourbon) and to Najaba (by Touching Wood), a Group 2-placed stakes winner in New Zealand who has some notable descendants.

Najaba's great-granddaughter Platinum Witness (by California Dane) won the 2014 Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas and two other pattern events, she was runner-up in the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks, and finished third in the Group 1 Windsor Park Horlicks Plate in October. That filly's stakes-winning dam Chartreuse (by St Petersburg) is a half-sister to the dam of the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks runner-up and dual pattern scorer Zennista (by Zenno Rob Roy).

Those top performers are too remotely connected to Prince Of Lir to be in a position to give us any sort of idea of his future potential, and his distaff line is a weak one for a barely tested and unproven horse who is covering such large numbers, but as a son of Kodiac from the immediate family of Resplendent Glory and Donnerschlag, it seems likely that his progeny will be mostly sprinters and milers.

One of the things that analysts look for when assessing the potential of any prospective stallion is the presence of other stallions in his family. Are there any? Were they any good? Are there reasons why some might have disappointed? Or have one or more of them being a notable success?

When Invincible Spirit began his career he could boast of being a Group 1-winning son of Green Desert (by Danzig) and of the classic star Rafha (by Kris), a mare whose dam was a half-sister to the classic-placed pattern winner and leading sire Pitcairn (by Petingo).

Those credentials augured well for his prospects and, although he looked like a horse who could do well in his new role, it is fair to say that the Irish National Stud's flag bearer has exceeded expectations. He is also showing signs of leaving a lasting impact via his stallion sons and broodmare daughters.

Rafha's five blacktype offspring also include the Group 3-placed Kodiac (by Danehill), a Tally-Ho Stud stallion who has worked his way up through the ranks to become one of the most sought-after sires and he too has a growing number of sons going to stud.

Al Anood (by Danehill) is a stakes-placed half-sister to Rafha and to Chiang Mai (by Sadler's Wells), the pattern-winning dam of Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes heroine Chinese White (by Dalakhani). She is, therefore, very closely related to Invincible Spirit, she could be described as being a three-parts sister to Kodiac, and so that makes her dual Group 1-winning son Pride Of Dubai an eye-catching additions to the European stallion ranks.

His Group 1 wins came over six and seven furlongs in Australia as a two-year-old, he was short-headed by Of The Brave in a Group 3 contest over five and a half furlongs, and he is a son of Street Cry (by Machiavellian), the late champion sire whose stallion sons include Shocking, Street Boss, Street Hero and Street Sense.

Coolmore Stud's reverse-shuttler has 104 registered foals in the northern hemisphere half of his global first crop. He looks likely to get his best representatives in the five to 10-furlong range.

Timeform 119-rated sprinter Pearl Secret stands at Bucklands Farm and Stud in Gloucestershire and there are 39 registered foals in his first crop. Winner of his only start at two, he won three from four as a three-year-old, including an odds-on listed success at Sandown, and his most high-profile victory came in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock at the age of six.

He is among the leading sons of the Group 1 July Cup hero Compton Place (by Indian Ridge) and he is the best of several winners out of Our Little Secret (by Rossini), a prolific sprinter who won a listed contest at Chester.

His grandam, Sports Post Lady (by M Double M), won four times and is a half-sister to Palacegate Episode (by Drumalis), Another Episode (by Drumalis) and Palacegate Jack (by Neshad), blacktype stars who won a total of 37 races between them.

The latter won 15 including the Listed Rockingham Stakes, Listed Harry Rosebery Trophy and Listed Tattersalls Breeders Stakes, while Group 3 Molecomb Stakes runner-up Another Episode notched up a tally of 11 that included the Listed Roses Stakes at York.

Palacegate Episode was best of the trio, the champion older mare in Germany in 1994 and an 11-time scorer who won the Group 3 Premio Omenoni, Listed St Hugh's Stakes, and three editions of the Listed Flieger Preis at Cologne, among other blacktype success.

Her son King Quantas (by Danehill) was champion two-year-old in Scandinavia in 2000 and his string of career wins included the Group 3 Polar Cup at Ovreroll. Her stakes-placed daughter Longing To Dance (by Danehill Dancer) is the dam of the Group 3 Prix de Psyche winner Be My Gal (by Galileo).

From the perspective of assessing Pearl Secret's sire potential, it is more notable that Palacegate Episode's unplaced daughter Halland Park Lass (by Spectrum) is the dam of classic-placed Group 2 Blandford Stakes winner Up (by Galileo) and of the classic-placed dual Group 1 star and notably successful stallion Dutch Art (by Medicean). He looks likely to sire sprinters and milers and to get his best performers in all age groups.

PARISH HALL (IRE) - 2009 bay horse

Jim Bolger's homebred Parish Hall stands at Redmondstown Stud in Co Wexford and there are 21 registered foals in his first crop.

He beat Power by half a length in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at two, with Most Improved a head back in third, and although he missed the whole of his three-year-old season, he came back as an older horse to show good form at four, five and six.

He was a high-class 10-furlong horse who came within a neck of beating Pether's Moon in a Group 3 contest over 12 at Ascot and lost out by the same margin to Magician in an edition of the Group 3 Mooresbridge Stakes over 10 at the Curragh. He was also placed in pattern events won by Camelot and Fascinating Rock.

Parish Hall is an early stallion for leading international sire Teofilo (by Galileo) – sire of Group 1 sire Havana Gold – and the first thing that strikes about his pedigree is that he is inbred 3x3 to Sadler's Wells (by Northern Dancer).

He is a full-brother to the blacktype-placed duo Hall Of Fame and Siamsaiocht, and his dam, Halla Siamsa (by Montjeu), is a winning half-sister to 10-furlong Group 2 scorer and Group 1 Irish Derby third Light Heavy (by Teofilo). Indeed, that colt and Parish Hall could be described as being three-parts brothers.

The grandam is dual middle-distance scorer Siamsa (by Quest For Fame) and her siblings include Amanta (by Sanglamore), the winning grandam of pattern-placed, stakes-winning juvenile sprinter An Ghalanta (by Holy Roman Emperor). The latter's daughter, Bletchley (by Makfi), has been Grade 2-placed in Canada this year.

Given his pedigree and connections, it would be no surprise to see Parish Hall sire some talented performers, and his best are likely to be in the mile to 14-furlong range.

OL' MAN RIVER (IRE) - 2012 bay horse

A €2,850,000 graduate of the Goffs Orby Sale, Ol' Man River made a winning debut over a mile at the Curragh, followed-up with an odds-on success in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes, but his best effort in five subsequent starts was his fourth-place finish behind Balios in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot.

He is a son of the brilliant middle-distance horse Montjeu (by Sadler's Wells), a horse who sons have been producing excellent results with their National Hunt runners, and his dam is the dual classic star Finsceal Beo (by Mr Greeley), a half-sister to the Group 2 Mehl Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) scorer Frozen Power (by Oasis Dream).

His grandam is the Listed Lupe Stakes runner-up Musical Treat (by Royal Academy), his third dam is the prolific Mountain Ash (by Dominion), who won at up to Group 3 level, and that mare's siblings include the Group 3 scorer Lidhame (by Nureyev). The next dam, Red Berry (by Great Nephew), won a listed contest at Newbury as a juvenile and was runner-up in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes.

With these pedigree connections it seems likely that Ol' Man River will do well as a National Hunt sire. Arctic Tack Stud's young recruit has 46 registered foals in his first crop.

NEW BAY (GB) - 2012 chestnut horse

Runner-up over a mile on the all-weather track at Chantilly in November of his juvenile season, New Bay got off the mark at the second attempt, a mile maiden at Longchamp in April and just a few weeks before he chased home Make Believe in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas).

Just three weeks after that he was established on the international scene having beaten Highland Reel by one and a half lengths in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club.

He followed that with defeat of Dariyan in the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville, easily beat Silverwave in the Group 2 Prix Niel at Longchamp, and had the mighty Treve a nose behind when third to Golden Horn and Flintshire in the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Timeform rated him 128.

New Bay's four-year-old campaign did not go as hoped. He was well-beaten behind A Shin Hikari in the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan on his seasonal reappearance, bounced back to take the Group 3 Prix Gontaut-Biron over 10 furlongs at Deauville nearly three months later and then finished fourth to Almanzor in that vintage edition of the Group 1 Qipco Irish Champion Stakes at Leopadstown before coming home in only seventh behind Found in the Arc, this year run at Chantilly.

He took up stallion duties at Ballylinch Stud, has covered large books in his first two seasons, and has 67 registered foals in his first crop.

Being a classic-winning son of Dubawi (by Dubai Millennium) would be more than enough to guarantee that he would attract attention as a stallion recruit, but New Bay is out of Cinnamon Bay (by Zamindar), a stakes winner who comes from the immediate family of leading international sire Oasis Dream (by Green Desert).

His dam is a half-sister to the Group 1-placed Group 2 scorer Bellamy Cay (by Kris), his grandam is the stakes-placed Trellis Bay (by Sadler's Wells), and her siblings include Group 1 Irish Oaks heroine Wemyss Bight (by Dancing Brave).

That champion is the dam of multiple Group/Grade 1 star and successful dual-purpose sire Beat Hollow (by Sadler's Wells), her full-sister Hope is the dam of Oasis Dream and also of Zenda (by Zamindar), the classic-winning dam of brilliant miler and young Banstead Manor Stud stallion Kingman (by Invincible Spirit) who made such an impression in 2018 with his first juveniles.

Trellis Bay's siblings also include a full-sister named Coraline. That mare is the dam of the Group 1-winning stayer Reefscape (by Linamix), of Group 1-placed Group 2 scorer Coastal Path (by Halling) and of Group 2 winner Martaline (by Linamix), and she is the grandam of the Group 2 scorer Doha Dream (by Shamardal). Those four are all stayers, as was Bellamy Cay, but New Bay got more of the speed of his sire and dam than the stronger stamina of some of his relations.

All of this makes New Bay a fascinating stallion prospect. The contribution of the mares may determine how his offspring fare as juveniles as he looks a likely candidate to get high-class milers and middle-distance horses. He could be a potential classic sire.
