Mehmas caught the eye when he made a winning debut over five furlongs at Chester in early May. The performance came just a few weeks after he fetched 170,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, and although by a stallion often associated with speed and precocity, the distaff side of his family paints a very different picture.
With what Al Shaqab Racing's Richard Hannon-trained colt achieved after that, it was clear that he is very much his father's son rather than typical of his dam's relations, and that made him an interesting racing prospect. However, his career ended at the end of his juvenile season. He chased home Caravaggio in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, then beat Intelligence Cross by half a length in the Group 2 Arqana July Stakes. In post-race interviews, Hannon noted the colt's size and said that unless the bay would grow by another couple of inches then he would be likely to struggle as a three-year-old. He appeared to run out of stamina when runner-up to Churchill in the Group 1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes at the Curragh and was below par when only third to The Last Lion in the Group 1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes, on what would be his final start. He is by the sire of Dark Angel and Equiano, retired to Tally-Ho Stud, has covered more than 170 mares in each of his first two season, and has 130 registered foals in his first crop.
Running only at two made him a somewhat unusual member of his family. The best of several winners out of an unraced mare called Lucina (by Machiavellian), he was bred by Epona Bloodstock Ltd and his dam is a half-sister to 10 winners, four of whom deserve mention.
Lundy's Lane (by Darshaan) was runner-up in the Group 3 Craven Stakes and third in the Group 1 Derby Italiano, Rugged Cross (by Cape Cross) is a pattern-placed stakes winner in Australia, and the prolific Blue Monday (by Darshaan), who won two editions of the Group 3 Arc Trial at Newbury, was third in both the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes and Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes. The fourth notable sibling is Jakarta (by Machiavellian). A full-sister to Lucina, she won just once, the best of her progeny is the Group 2-placed Puggy (by Mark Of Esteem), and that filly is the one who gave us the French champion Avenir Certain (by Le Havre). Placed in the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet and in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes on her final two starts last year, that Jean-Claude Rouget-trained bay was unbeaten at two and extended her winning run to six when taking the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas), Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) and Group 2 Prix de la Nonette in 2014. Lunda (by Soviet Star), the grandam of Mehmas, was unplaced in three starts, but six of her siblings were winners and five of those were blacktype horses. Indeed, four members of that quintet were considerably more than just that bare description. Luana (by Shaadi) won three times, earned her bold type when finishing third in the Listed Bentinck Stakes at Newmarket, and the best of her progeny are the Group 3 Jockey Club Cup scorer Tastahil (by Singspiel) and his half-brother Hattan (by Halling). That colt won the Group 3 Chester Vase, the Group 3 Winter Derby and the Group 3 September Stakes, he was only beaten by a nose by Sudan in the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano, chased home Cherry Mix in the Group 1 Premio Roma, and was placed in a string of other pattern events. Her half-sister Cloud Castle (by In The Wings) won the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, was only beaten by three-parts of a length by Leggera in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille, and was third to Catchascatchcan in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks. Although neither performance counted for blacktype, it is, nonetheless, worth noting that this Clive Brittain-trained bay finished fourth in both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks. Cloud Castle went on to produce a string of winners at stud, including the Listed scorers Reverie Solitaire (by Nashwan) and Urban Castle (by Street Cry) and the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes winner Queen's Best (by King's Best). The three other talented racehorses out of Listed Sweet Solera Stakes winner Lucayan Princess (by High Line) were all well-known colts. Needle Gun (by Sure Blade) won the Group 2 Gallinule Stakes and Group 3 Meld Stakes, he was runner-up in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes, and got some winners as a National Hunt sire, most notably the dual listed-chase scorer Yes Sir. Luso (by Salse), who won the Group 1 Derby Italiano, Group 1 Deutschlandpreis and two editions of the Group 1 Aral-Pokal, went on to become a good sire of staying chasers with dual Grade A Thyestes Chase winner Preists Leap, Grade 2 winner and Cheltenham Festival scorer Chicago Grey, and the tragically ill-fated Grade A Irish Grand National hero Hear The Echo his standout performers. Warrsan (by Caerleon) was the most popular member of the family, and arguably the most talented. Saeed Manana's homebred globetrotter was trained by Clive Brittain, he won the Group 1 Coronation Cup as a five-year-old, beat Doyen easily in the same race 12 months later, followed that with victory in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden and, at the age of seven, won a second edition of that 12 furlong prize, this time beating dual Group 1 star Gonbarda by one and a quarter lengths. He won nine of his 43 starts, was placed in 13, earned over £1.65 million, and he ran in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Dubai, Hong Kong and Japan. He was retired in April 2006, at the age of eight, but before a stud place could be arranged for him he died from what was reported as “complications resulting from a tumour.” There are also two unraced daughters of Lucayan Princess who have made a contribution to the family's reputation. Mantesera (by In The Wings), a full-sister to Cloud Castle, is the dam of the Group 3 Winter Derby winner Nideeb (by Exceed And Excel) and of Suegioo (by Manduro), a gelding who was third in the Ebor Handicap and in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup. Maskunah (by Sadler's Wells) is responsible for the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes winner Laaheb (by Cape Cross) and for the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes runner-up Ruwaiyan (by Cape Cross). But Mehmas was only a juvenile sprinter. It would appear that Acclamation's speed combined with that of Lucina's sire or broodmare sire – Machiavellian (by Mr Prospector) and Soviet Star (by Nureyev) – and it's a pity that he was unable to try to develop his profile at three. He was rated 115 by Timeform and looks likely to get sprinters and milers. MEHMAS (IRE) – b.2014 – Acclamation – Lucina, 4 wins inc July Stakes (Gr2), Richmond Stakes (Gr2), 2nd National Stakes (Gr1), Coventry Stakes (Gr2), National Stakes (L), 3rd Middle Park Stakes (Gr1). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2018.

The rise of Dark Angel (by Acclamation) to become a leading European sire has been something of a surprise and he already has a string of sons who at stud. Those include Group 1 star Lethal Force, the pattern scorers Alhebayeb and Heeraat, and Group 1-placed Tough As Nails, each of whom has sired winners, although without getting anything of note, yet.
Markaz is among those at earlier stages of their career and the young Derrinstown Stud team member has 74 registered foals in his first crop. In addition to having the considerable attraction of being a full-brother to the Timeform 130-rated dual Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes heroine Mecca's Angel, he has the distinction of having been a notably talented performer in his own right, a dual Group 2-placed six and seven-furlong pattern winner.
He was a pattern-placed winner as a juvenile and at three he won the Group 3 Criterion Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket, was beaten by less than three lengths when fourth to Adaay in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock, and chased home Limato in the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster.
At four, he won the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes over six furlongs on the tapeta at Newcastle, he was fourth to Richard Pankhurst in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes over seven at Newbury, and was a three-quarter length runner-up to Donnerschlag in the Group 2 Goldene Peitsche over six at Baden-Baden on what was to be his final start. He was awarded that race in the stewards' room, but that decision was later reversed on appeal. A good-looking horse who made £200,000 in Doncaster as a yearling, Markaz is out of the prolific sprint winner Folga (by Atraf), a daughter of the pattern-winning sprinter Desert Dawn (by Belfort), whose offspring also include the listed scorer Desert Kaya (by Bikala). The next dam is a four-times winner called Cast Pearls (by Cutlass). This is a weak family for a prospective stallion, but his talent (Timeform-rated 121), and that of his brilliant sister, combined with being a son of the hugely popular Dark Angel and having got good-sized books in his first two seasons, make him an interesting member of the ranks. He looks like a potential source of sprinters and milers. MARKAZ (IRE) – gr.2012 – Dark Angel – Folga, 3 wins inc Criterion Stakes (Gr3), Chipchase Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Goldene Peitsche (Gr2), Park Stakes (Gr2), Somerville Tattersall Stakes (Gr3), 3rd King Charles II Stakes (L), Spring Trophy Stakes (L). The Peter Chapple-Hyam trained Marcel was among the ante-post leaders for the classics following his victory in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy over a mile at Doncaster, for which he earned a Timeform rating of 118, but he finished down the field behind Galileo Gold in the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket at the end of April and was not seen out again.
Like classic stars Harbour Law and Just The Judge, Marcel is a Group 1-winner by Lawman, Ballylinch Stud's classic-winning son of Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert). He is standing at the National Stud in Newmarket, but there are just 18 registered foals in his first crop.
He is out of an unraced full-sister to the Group 2 Diadem Stakes runner-up Munjiz (by Marju) and his grandam, Absaar (by Alleged), is a winning half-sister to the Group/Grade 1 stars Annoconnor (by Nureyev) and At Talaq (by Roberto).
The former won the Ramona Handicap, Santa Ana Handicap and Vanity Invitational Handicap – all Grade 1 – and her string of stakes-winning descendants includes the Group 2 Cape Verdi Stakes and Group 2 Balanchine Stakes heroine Cladocera (by Oasis Dream). At Talaq, who was third in the Group 1 Derby Italiano and fourth in the Group 1 Derby at Epsom, won the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris, Group 1 MacKinnon Stakes and Group 1 Melbourne Cup. He died young but the progeny he left behind included the Group 1 scorers Al Mansour, Leica Smile, Star Of Maple, Toledo, and sprint champion Skating. Absaar's siblings also include two mares from whom several stakes winners descend and the more notable of the pair is Pattimech (by Nureyev), dam of the dual Group 3 scorer Far Lane (by Lear Fan) and grandam of the Group/Grade 2 stars Arod (by Teofilo) and Dark Islander (by Singspiel). Marcel represents the Green Desert (by Danzig) sire line and he comes from the immediate family of a notably successful stallion, which makes him an interesting prospect. Small numbers will hamper his chances, but he should be capable of getting some useful milers and middle-distance horses. MARCEL (IRE) – b.2013 – Lawman – Mauresmo, 2 wins inc Racing Post Trophy (Gr1). Sire in England. First foals in 2018.

They also include Vale Of York and that juvenile Grade 1 winner, who stands at Haras Des Faunes in France, is a full-brother to Life Force. His early runners include the juvenile pattern scorers Afandem and Fontanelice. The pair are out of Red Vale (by Halling) and their dam is an unraced half-sister to the US Grade 3 scorer Uraib (by Mark Of Esteem). Their grandam is Hamsaat (by Sadler's Wells), who is a winning full-sister to the Group 2 Tattersalls Gold Cup and Group 2 Prince of Wales's Stakes star Batshoof, and the next dam is Steel Habit (by Habitat), a winning full-sister to two horses of note. Her full-brother Ancestral won the Group 3 Railway Stakes, Group 3 McCairns Trial Stakes and Grade 3 San Diego Handicap, and her full-sister Zummerudd is the dam of Group 1 2000 Guineas and Group 1 National Stakes hero and successful sire King Of Kings (by Sadler's Wells). His Group 2 Prix Robert Papin-winning half-brother General Monash (by Thorn Dance) also sired winners and blacktype horses, his full-sister Lucky won the Group 3 Athasi Stakes, another one, Amethyst, was runner-up in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas, and his siblings also include Furajet (by The Minstrel). Although being by a Derby hero, she was a sprinter and she earned her blacktype when placed in each of the Group 3 Palace House Stakes, Group 3 Queen Mary Stakes and Listed Trafalgar House Sprint Stakes. What makes her notable here, however, is that her star son, the Group 1-placed Group 2-winning miler China Visit (by Red Ransom), went on to be a leading sire in India. Invincible Spirit's three-parts brother Kodiac (by Danehill) has developed a strong profile as a sire in recent seasons and he has several sons in the early staged of their own stud careers. They include Adaay, Coulsty, Prince Of Lir, and Kodi Bear, each of whom had his first foals in 2018. The latter stands at Rathbarry Stud and has 76 registered foals in his first crop.
He was a listed winner over seven furlongs at Ascot in July of his two-year-old season and chased home champion Belardo in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes on his next start. Timeform rated him 112 that year but 123 as a three-year-old after a campaign that saw him add three more blacktype wins to his name. He kicked off that season with listed success over eight and a half furlongs at Windsor, finished only fourth behind Territories in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly, but then bounced back a month later to take the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes in impressive style over a mile at Salisbury, winning by four and a half lengths.
Two weeks after that, he beat Gabrial by three and a quarter lengths in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood, and although he was unplaced behind Solow in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on his final start, he was beaten by just under four lengths.
Kodi Bear stayed in training as a four-year-old, taking on some of the best around in four starts over a mile, but he did not manage to reach the frame in any of them. The best of eight winners out of an unraced mare called Hawattef (by Mujtahid), he is a half-brother to the dam of two Italian listed scorers and his grandam, dual winner Madary (by Green Desert) is a half-sister to two broodmares of note. Shining Creek (by Bering) produced the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Cool Creek (by Desert Style) and her half-sister Dievotchka (by Dancing Brave) is the dam of six stakes winners, most notably the classic-placed triple Group 1 mile star Esoterique (by Danehill Dancer). That filly's half-brothers Russian Hope (by Rock Hopper), Russian Cross (by Cape Cross) and Archange D'Or (by Danehill) got their Group 2 wins over middle-distances. Half-brother Russian Desert (by Desert Prince) was a Group 2-placed stakes winner in France, and their half-sister Russian Hill (by Indian Ridge), who won a listed contest and was runner-up in both the Group 2 Prix de Royallieu and Group 2 Prix Corrida, is the dam of the dual pattern-winning sprinter Russian Soul (by Invincible Spirit). There are various other blacktype horses to be found within these first three generations of the family and their branches, and if you go back farther then you will find a host of notable individuals. The fourth dam of Kodi Bear is the classic-placed Princess Margaret Stakes winner Photo Flash (by Match), her descendants also include Group 1 scorer Hello (by Lycius) and Group 2 winners Dano-Mast (by Unfuwain), Atlantis Prince (by Tagula) and Prolific (by Compton Place), among others of note, and her siblings included champion racehorse and notable stallion Welsh Pageant (by Tudor Melody), sire of eight Group 1 winners. Those horses are remotely connected to Kodi Bear and even further removed are the likes of Royal Palace (by Ballymoss), Selhurst (by Charlottesville), Desert Prince (by Green Desert) and Make Believe (by Makfi), who appear in various other offshoots of the family. Kodi Bear is a Timeform 123-rated miler who is by a leading young sire, inbred 3x4 to Danzig (by Northern Dancer), and from a branch of a famous family. He is somewhat closely related to a multiple Group 1 mile star, and his sire is closely related to a leading sire whose early stallion sons are doing well. He looks likely to get his best in the six to 12-furlong range. KODI BEAR (IRE) – br.2012 – Kodiac – Hawattef, 4 wins inc Celebration Mile (Gr2), Sovereign Stakes (Gr3), Midsummer Stakes (L), Winkfield Stakes (L), 2nd Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1). Sire in Ireland. Fifth over a mile at Gowran Park on his only start as a juvenile, Harzard burst onto the scene with a 16-length defeat of Sword Fighter over 10 furlongs on heavy ground at Cork in late March. The runner-up went on to win the Listed Queen's Vase and Group 2 Curragh Cup, and Harzard went on to become one of the brightest stars of 2016.
Two weeks after this maiden success, Harzand took on Idaho in the Group 3 P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes over the same trip at Leopardstown and, when the latter took up the running more than a furlong from home, the son of Galileo looked set for victory. But then Harzand made his move, passed Idaho and won by one and a quarter lengths, with that colt finishing seven and a half lengths clear of the third. I reviewed Harzard's pedigree for The Irish Field after that race, explaining why there was reason to believe that he could become both a classic winner and one of the top Group 1 horses of 2016, and noting too that Idaho's performance was also enough to suggest that he also remained a live classic prospect. Neither colt disappointed. Harzand went on to beat US Army Ranger and Idaho in the Group 1 Investec Derby at Epsom and then followed-up with by again beating Idaho in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh. Sadly, his final two starts did not go as smoothly, injured when down the field behind Almanzor in the Group 1 Qipco Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown and then unplaced behind Found in the Group 1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly.
Like runaway classic star Sea The Moon, whose first crop were notably successful in 2018 and include juvenile pattern winners, Harzand is an early stallion son for the Timeform 140-rated superstar Sea The Stars (by Cape Cross).
This is the Green Desert branch of the powerful Danzig (by Northern Dancer) sire line, and as Sea The Stars is a half-brother to the great Galileo (by Sadler's Wells) there is every reason to hope that he too will get some top-class sire sons. Hazariya (by Xaar), the dam of Harzand, won the Group 3 Athasi Stakes and her four previous winners include listed scorer Hazarafa (by Daylami), pattern-placed Haziyna (by Halling), and Group 1-placed Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes winner Harasiya (by Pivotal). The mare is a half-sister to the classic-placed Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes winner Hazarista (by Barathea), to the dam of middle-distance listed scorer Humphrey Bogart (by Tagula), and also to Handaza (by Be My Guest). That mare is the dam of the Group 3 Concorde Stakes winner Hamairi (by Spectrum), of pattern-placed listed scorer Hanabad (by Cadeaux Genereux), and of Hannda (by Dr Devious), the dam of Group 1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mare Stakes heroine Seal Of Approval (by Authorized). Their dam, Hazaradjat (by Darshaan), won twice and as she was out of the Prix de Royallieu runner-up and multiple stakes winner Hazy Idea (by Hethersett), she was a half-sister to the Timeform 125-rated juvenile Hittite Glory (by Habitat). He won the Group 1 Flying Childers Stakes and Group 1 Middle Park Stakes in 1975, and although he failed to make an impact as a stallion that should not reflect negatively on Harzand's prospects. The classic star represents a notably successful male line, whereas Hittite Glory was by a major sire but one whose stallion sons tended to disappoint at stud. Being bred to excel on the track is not necessarily the same thing as being bred for success at stud. Hazy Idea's descendants also include the Australian juvenile champion Decision Time (by Foreplay) – a Group 2 scorer who was runner-up in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes – and also the outstanding filly Streama (by Stratum), whose wins include the Group 1 AJC Oaks, Group 1 Doomben Cup, Group 1 Coolmore Stud Flight Stakes and Group 1 George Main Stakes. Harzand was indeed one of the top Group 1 horses of 2016 and this dual Derby hero, who stands at his owner-breeder's famous Gilltown Stud, has 62 registered foals in his first crop. He is a fascinating prospect – likely to be a source of milers, middle-distance horses, and stayers – and, as we are likely to see with all of the Sea The Stars horses who go to stud, it would be no surprise to see a fair number of his mares representing Galileo, his descendants, and others representing the Sadler's Wells line. HARZAND (IRE) – br.2013 – Sea The Stars – Hazariya, 4 wins inc Derby (Gr1), Irish Derby (Gr1), Ballysax Stakes (Gr3). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2018.

Unraced at two, Flintshire won the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris at three, and although he disappointed on two subsequent outings that season, he went on to become a leading international performer in each of the next three years.
He won or was placed in Group/Grade 1 contests in England, France, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America, earned a Timeform rating of 123 as a three-year-old, and was rated 128 by that organisation at four, five and six. He retired to Hill 'N Dale Farms in Kentucky with over €8 million in earnings, has proved popular with breeders, and has 98 registered foals in his first crop
Flintshire is one of 21 top-level winners among 133 stakes winners by the now retired Banstead Manor Stud stallion Dansili (by Danehill), a horse whose stallion sons include the Group 1 sires Harbinger and Zoffany.
His full-brother Dance Moves was a Group 2-placed stakes winner in France, his half-sister Deliberate (by King's Best) is the winning dam of US mile Grade 2 scorer Projected (by Showcasing), and his dam is the high-class middle-distance performer Dance Routine (by Sadler's Wells), who won the Group 2 Prix de Royallieu and was runner-up in the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks). His grandam is Group 3 Prix de Royaumont scorer Apogee (by Shirley Heights) and his third dam is the Group 1 Oaks and Group 1 Irish Oaks runner-up Bourbon Girl (by Ile De Bourbon), the latter is the grandam of Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud victor Spanish Moon (by El Prado), and there are various other stakes and pattern winners in the family, but there is one horse on the page who stands out head and shoulders above the rest. That star is an even brighter one than Flintshire, and she is out of a pattern-placed, stakes-winning full-sister to Dance Routine. Concentric is the mare and Enable her daughter. That multi-millionaire and Timeform 134-rated champion is by Newsells Park Stud stallion Nathaniel (by Galileo) – so is inbred 2x3 to Sadler's Wells (by Northern Dancer) – and she took her record to 10 wins from 11 starts with an historic recent success in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. Enable is a dual Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine, she has won the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, the Group 1 Oaks at Epsom, the Group 1 Irish Oaks at the Curragh, and the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks, and has secured her place among the all-time great fillies of the turf. Being a top-class 10-12 furlong turf horse with such a strong middle-distance pedigree makes Flintshire an intriguing prospect for a US-based stallion, and it will be fascinating to see if he can become the next Kitten's Joy (by El Prado). It seems likely that he will have quite a few runners in Europe over the coming years. Pretty much every flat sire gets two-year-old winners, although those by Flintshire are likely to need at least seven furlongs to be seen to best effect. It would be no surprise to see him get stakes and pattern winners in that age group, although his long-term potential is as a sire of milers and middle-distance horses. FLINTSHIRE (GB) - b.2010 - Dansili - Dance Routine, 8 wins inc Grand Prix de Paris (Gr1), Hong Kong Vase (Gr1), Sword Dancer Stakes (Gr1-twice), Woodford Reserve Manhattan Stakes (Gr1), Bowling Green Stakes (Gr2), Prix du Lys (Gr3), 2nd Breeders' Cup Turf (Gr1-twice), Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr1-twice), Coronation Cup (Gr1), Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr1), Dubai Sheema Classic (Gr1), Hong Kong Vase (Gr1), Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes (Gr1), Prix Foy (Gr2), 3rd Coronation Cup (Gr1). The Group 3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes has a remarkable record this century of being won by subsequent Group 1 stars and the roll of honour includes Fascinating Rock (by Fastnet Rock), the dual top-level winner whom Timeform rated 127 at four and 129 at five.
The grandson of Danehill (by Danzig) is one of two horses who began their stallion career at Ballylinch Stud in 2017 – the other is New Bay – and there are 56 registered foals in his first crop. A top-class 10-furlong horse, Fascinating Rock was unplaced in both the Derby and Irish Derby but, on his only other attempt at a mile and a half, he beat Panama Hat by six lengths in a Group 3 contest at Leopardstown. Both of his Group 1 wins came at the expense of the star filly Found.
He is an early stallion son for Australian champion sire Fastnet Rock, a horse whose 142 stakes winners include European Group 1 stars such as Diamondsandrubies, Qualify, Merchant Navy, and One Master, and whose overall tally of 36 top-level winners includes reverse-shuttle sire Foxwedge, sire of this year's Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes scorer Urban Fox.
Fascinating Rock is the best of three winners out of Miss Polaris (by Polar Falcon), the other pair include the Grade A Galway Hurdle star Quick Jack (by Footstepsinthesand), and his dam's four blacktype siblings are headed by her stakes-winning full-brother Euro Falcon. His grandam is the one-time scorer Sarabah (by Ela-Mana-Mou) and as she is out of the prolific Be Discreet (by Junius) that makes her a half-sister to the multiple Group 1-placed triple Group 2-winning miler Gothenberg (by Polish Patriot), to multiple blacktype-placed juvenile sprinter Omaha City (by Night Shift), and to Lindesberg (by Doyoun). That latter horse is the dam of Group 1 Phoenix Stakes runner-up Amadeus Mozart (by Mozart) and of Listed Masaka Stakes third Madam Hoi (by Hawk Wing) and she is the grandam of the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Stakes winner Nancy From Nairobi (by Sixties Icon) and of Japanese Group 3 scorer Sweet Salsa (by Durandal). If you go back to the fourth generation of the family then you will find a string of stakes winners, including Japanese champion and US Grade 1 scorer Cesario (by Special Week), who became the dam of the Group 1 Japan Cup and Group 1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) winner and dual classic-placed colt Epiphaneia (by Symboli Kris S) and his Group 1-winning juvenile champion half-brother Leontes (by King Kamehameha). The fourth dam of Fascinating Rock is Querida (by Habitat) and, in addition to being a half-sister to the Timeform 131-rated sprinter-miler Chief Singer (by Ballad Rock), she was a granddaughter of Oaks, Lowther Stakes, Cherry Hinton Stakes and Park Hill Stakes heroine Pia (by Darius). Fascinating Rock was unplaced on his only start at two, the mile maiden in late October won by subsequent Group 1 star Adelaide, who was also making his debut. This, combined with his pedigree and overall racing record suggests that, although he will of course get winners in that age group, his best results are likely to be seen with his three-year-olds and older horses, mostly in the broad mile to two-mile range. FASCINATING ROCK (IRE) – b.2011 – Fastnet Rock – Miss Polaris, 8 wins inc Champion Stakes (Gr1), Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr1), Mooresbridge Stakes (Gr3), Kilternan Stakes (Gr3), Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes (Gr3), Ballysax Stakes (Gr3), Heritage Stakes (L), 2nd Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr1), Royal Whip Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Mooresbridge Stakes (Gr3). A late addition to the list of new sires for 2017, former leading juvenile Estidhkaar is to join the team at Tara Stud in Co Meath.
A high-class son of leading sire Dark Angel (by Acclamation), Estidhkaar stands at Tara Stud in Ireland and has 92 registered foals in his first crop – a striking contrast to the fortunes of his more talented half-brother, Toormore (by Arakan). The Group 1-winning juvenile champion went on to become a Group 1-placed, Group 2-winning miler, he to retire to Dalham Hall Stud, but was withdrawn from the roster before the season began, reportedly through lack of interest. He returned to training last year, was later gelded, and died this year at the age of seven. Estidhkaar, on the other hand, won an extended six-furlong maiden at Newbury in mid-June of his two-year-old season, added the Group 2 Superlative Stakes over seven at Newmarket and the Group 2 Champagne Stakes over that trip at Doncaster, and then finished fourth to Belardo in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, beaten five lengths.
He was beaten by just a neck when runner-up to the subsequent sprint champion Muhaarar in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes on his seasonal reappearance at three but then ran unplaced behind Gleneagles in the Group 1 2000 Guineas and behind Esoterique in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois, before being off the track for 14 months.
When he returned, he ran just twice, finishing as runner-up to Crazy Horse in a seven furlong conditions event at Salisbury and then beating Kool Kompany by a neck in the Listed Ben Marshall Stakes over a mile on fast ground at Newmarket. He is out of the unraced mare Danetime Out (by Danetime), who is a half-sister to the Group 3-placed Easaar (by Machiavellian), and their grandam, Matila (by Persian Bold), is a winning daughter of the Group 3 Curragh Stakes winner Peace Girl (by Dominion). That mare, who was the joint champion juvenile filly in Ireland in 1987, is the grandam of the Group 3 Jockey Club Cup scorer Hawridge Prince (by Polar Falcon), of Listed Heron Stakes winner Hero's Journey (by Halling) and of several who have been blacktype placed, and she was a half-sister to the Group 3 Norfolk Stakes runner-up and prolific winner Runaway (by Godswalk). There are other talented horses to be found in the family, including the Group 2-placed stakes-winning juvenile Pool Music (by Forzando), Grade 2-winning miler Mr Napper Tandy (by Bahamian Bounty), Group 2 winner and Group 1 Champion Stakes runner-up Insatiable (by Don't Forget Me), and Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Seazun (by Zieten), but those horses are remotely connected to Estidhkaar. This is a weak distaff line for a prospective stallion, but Estidkhaar has been popular and has 92 registered foals in his first crop. His best are likely to be effective at anywhere from five to 10 furlongs. ESTIDHKAAR (IRE) – b.2012 – Dark Angel – Danetime Out, 4 wins inc Champagne Stakes (Gr2), Superlative Stakes (Gr2), Ben Marshall Stakes (L), 2nd Greenham Stakes (Gr3). Sire in Ireland. A Group 1 winner by the sire of Lope De Vega, Haras de Bonneval's young recruit was rated 123 by Timeform as a three-year-old and 126 at the age of four. His top win came when beating Silverwave by one and a quarter lengths in the Group 1 Prix Ganay at Saint-Cloud, and there are 59 registered foals in his first crop.
He is a half-brother to the listed scorer Darabad (by Dansili) and he is the first foal out of the Grade 1 Hong Kong Vase heroine Daryakana (by Selkirk), a mare whose dam was France's three-year-old filly champion of 1999. Daryaba (by Night Shift) won both the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) and Group 1 Prix Vermeille that season, and in addition to her top-level winner she is also responsible for the Group 2 Prix du Conseil de Paris scorer Daramsar (by Rainbow Quest) and pattern-placed stakes winner Daraybi (by Street Cry).
Darata (by Vayrann), the third dam of Dariyan, won the Listed Prix des Tourelles and was runner-up in the Group 3 Prix du Royaumont and she is one of several notable fillies out of a one-time scorer called Darazina (by Labus).
Gentle Genius (by Danehill) is an Australian-born Group 1-placed pattern winner and her offspring feature the dual Group 3-winning gelding Ironstein (by Zabeel). Her American-born half-sister Daralinsha (by Empery), on the other hand, won the Group 3 Prix Minerve and became a broodmare of considerable note. The Group 2-placed Daraydala (by Royal Academy) is Daralinsha's only stakes winner on the track but that filly's pattern-placed half-sister Darashandeh (by Darshaan) gave us the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) scorer Darsi (by Polish Precedent), while Daralbayda (by Doyoun), who was also Group 3-placed, is the grandam of Darjina and third dam of Almanzor. Dual champion Darjina (by Zamindar) won the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) in 2007 and her tally also featured the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and Group 1 Prix d'Astarte. She was also many times placed at the highest level and Timeform rated her 128 at three. Almanzor (by Wootton Bassett), of course, was the standout 10-furlong horse in Europe in 2016 and the Timeform 133-rated champion elect has won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club, Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes and Group 1 Champion Stakes. He stands at Haras d'Etreham, in France, and his first foals will arrive in 2019. Darazina's daughters also include Zaldivar (by Honour And Glory), who is the dam of the Group 1-placed Group 2 winner Honorine (by Redoute's Choice), and Darabaka (by Doyoun), dam of leading stayer Far Cry (by Pharly) and ancestor of a string of pattern winners that includes Group/Grade 2 scorers Grandeur (by Verglas) and Muthmir (by Invincible Spirit). DARIYAN (FR) – b.2012 – Shamardal – Daryakana, 4 wins inc Prix Ganay (Gr1), Prix Eugene Adam (Gr2), 2nd Prix d'Ispahan (Gr1), Dubai City of Gold Stakes (Gr2), Prix Guillaume d'Ornano (Gr2), 3rd Hong Kong Vase (Gr1). Kodiac (by Danehill) was only blacktype placed but, like his Group 1-winning half-brother Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert), he has become a leading sire who has a growing number of sons going to stud. His early recruits include Coulsty, who has been standing at Rathasker Stud in Ireland and has 38 registered foals in his first crop. He will be at Norman Court Stud in Salisbury, England, from 2019.
A five-length debut winner over five furlongs in late May of his juvenile season, he was stakes-placed in France that year, won the Group 3 Prix de Meautry over six furlongs at Deauville the following summer, and was a Group 2-placed stakes winner at the age of four. That notable placing was a half-length second to Adaay (by Kodiac) – another with his first foals in 2018 – in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes. Timeform rated Coulsty 110 at two, 113 as a three-year-old, 116 at four, and he was also a stakes-placed winner at the age of five.
He is the best of several winners out of triple scorer Hazium (by In The Wings), a mare whose unraced dam, Safe Care (by Caerleon), was a full-sister to the stakes-placed Alaflak and half-sister to Lugana Beach (by Tumble Wind).
That high-class sprinter won the Group 3 Duke of York Stakes and Group 3 Prix du Petit Couvert, he was runner-up in the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp, third in the Group 2 King's Stand Stakes, and Timeform rated him 116. Lugana Beach sired winners from limited opportunities. Aunty Eileen (by Ahonoora), a half-sister to Safe Care and Lugana Beach, has done her part for the family by being the dam of three stakes winners, one of whom reached a Timeform rating of 123, and ancestor of three more. That highly-rated son is The Tatling (by Perugino), the Group 2 King's Stand Stakes winner whose placings included two editions of the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp and three runner-up spots in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes. Safe Haven (by Blakeney), the unraced third dam of Coulsty, was out of one-time scorer Amazer (by Mincio) and that made her a half-sister to five blacktype horses, most notably the dual champion Mtoto (by Busted), winner of the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and two editions of the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes, runner-up in the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and Timeform-rated 134. Mtoto was a successful stallion whose progeny featured Derby hero Shaamit, star stayer Celeric, and dual Group/Grade 1 star Serious Attitude, and he has made an impact on the National Hunt sector as his late Group 2-winning son Presenting has been a multiple champion sire. There are many other stakes winners under the various branches of the fourth generation of the family, including the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Blue Canari (by Acatenango) and Grade 1 Canadian International Stakes scorer Mutamam (by Darshaan), although their relationship to Coulsty is remote. Coulsty represents the Danehill (by Danzig) sire line, he was precocious, durable and talented, and he is related to the notable sprinters Lugana Beach and The Tatling. He looks a likely candidate to do well with two-year-olds, with sprinters and also with milers. COULSTY (IRE) – b.2011 – Kodiac – Hazium, 5 wins inc Prix de Meautry (Gr3), King Charles II Stakes (L), King Richard III Stakes (L), 2nd Hungerford Stakes (Gr2), Queensferry Stakes (L), King Richard III Stakes (L), 3rd Prix Francois Boutin (L). He is a son of the champion National Hunt sire King's Theatre (by Sadler's Wells) and the best of his siblings is Caid Du Berlais (by Westerner), the former Paul Nicholls-trained gelding who won the Grade 3 Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase over the extended two and a half miles at Cheltenham four years ago. He is out of Kenza Du Berlais (by Kahyasi), who is a half-sister to the National Hunt blacktype scorers Enzo Du Berlais (by Mansonnien), Karoo du Berlais (by Irish River) and Isis Du Berlais (by Cadoudal). The latter is a blacktype producer and a full-sister to Chica Du Berlais, a placed mare whose five blacktype-winning offspring include the Grade 1-winning juvenile hurdler and prolific French blacktype scorer Bonito Du Berlais (by Trempolino), Grade 2 winning mare Nikita Du Berlais (by Poliglote), and also Bonita Du Berlais (by King's Theatre) – the listed hurdles scorer whose three-year-old daughter Byzance Du Berlais (by Martaline) won a listed hurdle race at Auteuil last week. In addition to his long list of flat and National Hunt listed, pattern and graded winning progeny, King's Theatre is also responsible for Great Pretender, a blacktype-winning hurdler and French-based stallion whose offspring feature the high-class pair Mr Mole and Ptit Zig. His younger representatives include Charming Thought, who beat Ivawood by a nose in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes on soft ground at Newmarket as a juvenile. He stands at Dalham Hall Stud and there are 45 registered foals in his first crop. That was his third win from four starts that season, following success over the same trip on good ground at Lingfield and on fast ground at Leicester, but although his pedigree suggested that he could have been a potential classic contender, a setback kept him off the track until June of his four-year-old season. Timeform rated him 118p at two, but he was not the same force when he eventually returned to action. He finished fourth in a six-furlong Salisbury listed contest, was only beaten by four lengths when out of the frame behind The Tin Man in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury and was then unplaced in a seven-furlong Group 3 contest at York. Charming Thought's 625,000gns yearling price tag says plenty about his looks and, as you would expect of an Oasis Dream, he comes from a notably successful family. He is the first foal out of the pattern-placed stakes winner Annabelle's Charm (by Indian Ridge), who was best from eight to 10 furlongs, and his unraced grandam, Kylemore (by Sadler's Wells), is a full-sister to two Group 1 winners. Aristotle won the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy and Ballingarry, who won both the Grade 1 Canadian International Stakes and Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, was placed in the Group 1 Irish Derby, Group 1 Derby Italiano and Group 1 Irish St Leger. Their half-brother Starborough (by Soviet Star) – who has sired stakes winners – won the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes and Group 1 Prix Jean Prat, thereby making their Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes-winning dam Flamenco Wave (by Desert Wine) one of those remarkable mares with at least three top-level winners to her name. They also have three half-sisters of note. Spanish Falls (by Belmez) won the Group 3 Prix du Royaumont and was third in the Group 2 Prix de Mallaret, Sanchez (by Wolfhound) is the grandam of the pattern-winning sprinter Waady (by Approve), and Leaping Water (by Sure Blade) is responsible for both the Grade 1-placed Grade 2 scorer Grammarian (by Definite Article) and the tragically ill-fated champion St Nicholas Abbey (by Montjeu). He was the top juvenile of 2009, when he won the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy, and he went on to add the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf, Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic, and three editions of the Group 1 Coronation Cup. He was placed in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes, Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic, Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf and in two runnings of the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and would have been a popular stallion. There will likely be some who view Charming Thought as a potential source of speedy juveniles, given that he is a Middle Park Stakes-winning son of Oasis Dream, but his pedigree is that of a miler who could have stayed 10 furlongs and so we should not be surprised if most of his best offspring show their talent in that range. CHARMING THOUGHT (GB) – b.2012 – Oasis Dream – Annabelle's Charm, 3 wins inc Middle Park Stakes (Gr1). Sire in England. First foals in 2018. FOALS CATALOGUED:

Placed on his only start as a juvenile, Cannock Chase ran just three times at three, all of them wins and culminating in a length and a half defeat of Mutakayyef in the Group 3 Tercentenary Stakes over 10 furlongs at Royal Ascot.
He was not seen out again until the following April, when he finished third to Western Hymn in the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown. He then failed by just half a length to take the Group 3 Huxley Stakes and his sixth of seven outings that year saw him beat Up With The Birds by one and a half lengths in the Grade 1 Canadian International Stakes over 12 furlongs at Woodbine. Cannock Chase ran just once at the age of five, beating Western Hymn by a length in the Group 3 Huxley Stakes at Chester. Timeform rated him 119 in 2015, he began his stallion career at Nunstainton Stud in North Yorkshire, and covered his second season at Worsall Grange. There are 37 registered foals in his first crop.
He is by the classic winner and highly-ranked Lane's End Farm stallion Lemon Drop Kid (by Kingmambo), he is a full-brother to the Group 2 Prix Eugene Adam scorer Pisco Sour, and his dam is a half-sister to the prolific blacktype horse Lord Admiral (by El Prado), a Group 1-placed horse whose wins included the Group 2 Jebel Hatta at Nad Al Sheba, the Group 3 Al Rashidiya Stakes at that same venue, and each of the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes, Listed Glencairn Stakes and Listed Knockaire Stakes at Leopardstown.
Lady Ilsley (by Trempolino), the stakes-placed grandam of Cannock Chase, is a half-sister to several winners and she is a full-sister to Najecam, the Grade 2-placed dam of juvenile champion and Grade 1 scorer Action This Day (by Kris S) and grandam of US sprint champion Drefong (by Gio Ponti), winner of the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Spring and Grade 1 King's Bishop Stakes. These are the highlights that you will see on a catalogue page for Cannock Chase, but what is not on the page is that his fourth dam is Bitty Girl (by Habitat), the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, Group 3 Lowther Stakes and Group 3 Molecomb Stakes winner of 1973, who was rated 123 by Timeform. Her year-younger full-brother Hot Spark won the Group 1 Flying Childers Stakes at two and achieved a Timeform rating of 126 at three. Like most sons of his leading sire, he disappointed at stud although did get some stakes winners and blacktype earners. It is through two of his daughters that Hot Spark's name was brought back to prominence in more recent times as he is the broodmare sire of the Group 1-winning sprinter Ya Malak (by Fairy King) and, more notably, of the dual Guineas hero and prolific Group 1 star Rodrigo De Triano (by El Gran Senor). Bitty Girl's son Beaudelaire (by Nijinsky), who won the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Gheest at three and a listed race at two, stood in Florida and in France. He got a few blacktype horses, including the Group 3 Prix d'Arenberg scorer Repercutionist. CANNOCK CHASE (USA) – b.2011 – Lemon Drop Kid – Lynnwood Chase, 5 wins inc Canadian International Stakes (Gr1), Huxley Stakes (Gr3), Tercentenary Stakes (Gr3), 2nd Winter Hill Stakes (Gr3), Huxley Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Gordon Richard Stakes (Gr3). Sire in England. First foals in 2018.

Just over two months after that he showed himself to be a better than the typical early juvenile as, having beaten Gifted Master over six furlongs at Newmarket and then been trounced by King Of Rooks in the Listed National Stakes over five furlongs at Sandown, he bolted home by six lengths in the Listed Woodcote Stakes at Epsom. Ten days later he proved that markedly better effort was no fluke as he extended his unbeaten record over six furlongs to three with a two-length defeat of subsequent juvenile champion Air Force Blue in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. With his pedigree and the current fashion for early juvenile speed in prospective stallions, it was all but certain from that day that a career at stud awaited him. His only subsequent starts that season resulted in defeats, but they were a third place finish to Air Force Blue in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh and a half-length defeat by Shalaa in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, and Timeform rated him 118. Like his most famous relation, Buratino's three-year-old season was a disappointment: fourth behind Quiet Reflection in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes easily the best of his five runs. That notable family member is Danehill Dancer (by Danehill), the dual juvenile Group 1 star who went on to become an influential classic sire. Danehill Dancer's siblings include juvenile Group 3 scorer Unilateral (by Rock of Gibraltar) and the listed race winners Colossus (by Danehill) and Adonesque (by Sadler's Wells). The latter, who won the Listed Blue Wind Stakes and finished third in the Group 3 Meld Stakes, is the dam of Buratino's stakes-placed dam Bergamask (by Kingmambo). Buratino is a son of the Group 1 star and leading international sire Exceed And Excel (by Danehill), whose early stallion sons include Excelebration (sire of Group 1 winner Barney Roy) and Helmet (sire of Group 1 winner Thunder Snow). This makes him quite closely related to Danehill Dancer, so it was no surprise that he proved popular in his first season. There are 76 foals registered in his first crop, and he looks likely to get his best winners in the five to 10-furlong range. The early stallion sons of Sadler's Wells (by Northern Dancer) achieved mixed results at stud but one of the handful who stood out was El Prado, an Irish Group 1 winner who went to stud in the USA. The grey was out of the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas scorer Lady Capulet (by Sir Ivor), he sired 83 stakes winners and one of the most influential of those is his son Kitten's Joy.
The Grade 1 star and long-time Ramsey Farm stallion (he's now at Hill 'N Dale Farms) is well-established as being one of the leading sires in the US, his European representatives include multiple Group 1 stars Hawkbill and Roaring Lion – both new sires for 2019 – and he is also responsible for one of the most intriguing young members of the European stallion ranks: Bobby's Kitten, who stands at Lanwades Stud and has 71 foals in his first crop. His best win came in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, where he got up near the line to beat No Nay Never by half a length, and his sole European start resulted in a runaway success in a six-furlong listed contest at Cork, so there might be a temptation to view him solely as a sprinter and to have expectations that his best progeny will excel in that division. But these would not be accurate perceptions of this high-class prospect.
Bobby's Kitten was just as effective at a mile, as one would expect of a Kitten's Joy horse who comes from the immediate family of the Grade 1 stars Paradise Creek (by Irish River), Wild Event (by Wild Again), Forbidden Apple (by Pleasant Colony), David Junior (by Pleasant Tap) and Eden's Moon (by Malibu Moon).
He is the best of four multiple winners for his dam, Celestial Woods (by Forestry), and that triple scorer's quartet includes the listed race winner Major Magic and the high-class eight to 10-furlong horse Camelot Kitten, a dual Grade 2 scorer. All are full-brothers to her Grade 1 star. The aforementioned list of Group/Grade 1 stars all appear under third dam North of Eden (by Northfields) – the first three are her sons and she is the grandam of the latter pair. And, as many will remember, the more famous of her two high-class siblings was Theatrical (by Nureyev), the Group 1 Irish Derby runner-up who went on to sweep six Grade 1s and the turf horse Eclipse Award in the USA before going on to becoming a leading international sire. There is also a horse of note under the second generation of his pedigree as Blissful Song (by Unbridled's Song), who is a half-sister to Celestial Woods, is the dam of triple Argentine Grade 1 star Sixties Song (by Sixties Icon), the latest of those wins coming over 12 furlongs at San Isidro late last month. With the right mares, Bobby's Kitten could certainly get some top-notch sprinters, but the overall picture of his racing record and pedigree is that of a horse who has the potential to become a successful sire of milers and middle-distance horses. He was a Grade 1-placed eight-and-a-half furlong Grade 3 scorer as a juvenile so he also appeals as a stallion who could get some high-class late season juveniles too. BOBBY'S KITTEN (USA) – b.2011 – Kitten's Joy – Celestial Woods, 6 wins inc Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (Gr1), Pilgrim Stakes (Gr3), Penn Mile Stakes (L), Cork Stakes (L), 2nd National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (Gr2), 3rd Woodbine Mile Stakes (Gr1), Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr1). A juvenile champion whom Timeform rated 119 at two, 123 at three and 125 at four, Belardo did not win in his second season but chased home Solow in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on his final start, which gave hope that he could return to top form as an older horse.
He kicked off that third campaign with victory in Doncaster Mile in early April, disappointed when only fourth to Toormore in the Group 2 bet365 Mile at Sandown, but then bounced back to beat Euro Charline by a length in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. He then failed by just half a length to beat the US champion Tepin in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot, on what turned out to be his final start. It was one of the best performances of his career and he lost nothing in defeat.
A first-crop son of the classic star and now well-established leading international sire Lope De Vega (by Shamardal), Belardo is a half-brother to the multiple pattern winner Berling (by Montjeu) and his dam, Danaskaya (by Danehill), was placed in both the Group 2 Lowther Stakes and Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes as a juvenile.
Her half-sister Modeeroch (by Mozart) was a Group 2-placed triple stakes winner in Ireland, half-brother Chinese Whisper (by Montjeu) was third in the Group 1 Gran Criterium, and her siblings also include Maskaya (by Machiavellian), the dam of Group 3 Lillie Langtry Stakes winner and Group 2 Park Hill Stakes third California (by Azamour). Majinskaya (by Marignan), the pattern-placed stakes-winning grandam of Belardo, is a half-sister to the dam of Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp heroine Kistena (by Miswaki) and she is out of Makarova (by Nijinsky), a blacktype-placed half-sister to the dam of Fruits Of Love (by Hansel) and Mujadil (by Storm Bird). The former won the Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes and two editions of the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes and he was multiple Group 1-placed. Mujadil, on the other hand, won the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes, he was runner-up in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes and became a notably successful stallion, mostly of horses in the five to seven-furlong range. Belardo's fifth dam is Midget (by Djebe), who won the Coronation Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Prix de la Foret, Prix Maurice de Gheest, and Cheveley Park Stakes, was runner-up in the 1000 Guineas and finished third in the Prix de Diane (French Oaks). Timeform rated her 130 at two and 125 at three, her progeny included the Cheveley Park Stakes winner Mige (by Saint Crespin) and her descendants include 1000 Guineas scorer Ma Biche (by Key To The Kingdom). Belardo was a top juvenile who became a leading miler, he is an early stallion son for a well-bred classic star and he comes from the family of Mujadil. He has 80 foals in his first crop and he looks a likely prospect to get his best winners in the six to 12-furlong range, with some showing talent in the latter half of their juvenile year. BELARDO (IRE) – b.2012 – Lope De Vega – Danaskaya, 5 wins inc Lockinge Stakes (Gr1), Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1), Doncaster Mile Stakes (L), Washington Singer Stakes (L), 2nd Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr1), Queen Anne Stakes (Gr1), 3rd Challenge Stakes (Gr2). Not only is the classic-winning miler Awtaad a representative of the Green Desert branch of the Danzig (by Northern Dancer) line, but he comes from the family of a stallion whose most famous son forged a dynasty. He was one of two new stallions joining the team at Derrinstown Stud in 2017 – the other is Markaz – and he has 83 foals in his first crop.
He is by the sire of the Derby and Arc heroes Sea The Stars and Golden Horn, and the former is already well-established as being a leading European stallion and classic sire whose roll of honour includes dual Derby winner Harzand (first foals in 2018). Golden Horn's first yearlings were very popular at the sales and he will be a freshman sire of 2019.
Awtaad is the first foal out of Asheerah (by Shamardal) and both of his younger half-sisters have been stakes placed. His dam is stakes-placed half-sister to three blacktype-placed fillies – one of whom is the dam of Timeform 114p-rated Group 2 winner and potential classic colt Madhmoon (by Dawn Approach) – and she is out of Adaala (by Sahm), who won the Listed Kilboy Estate Stakes and was third in the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial Stakes.
His third dam, Alshoowg (by Riverman), is an unraced half-sister to the dam of classic-placed Group 2 May Hill Stakes winner Nasheej (by Swain) and his fourth dam is Ghashtah (by Nijinsky), an unraced full-sister to Seattle Dancer and half-sister to Lomond (by Northern Dancer) and to Seattle Slew (by Bold Reasoning). Seattle Dancer, famously a $13.1 million yearling purchase in Keeneland, was a lightly-raced Group 1-placed dual Group 2 scorer on the track and his progeny included the Group/Grade 1 winners Caffe Latte, Pike Place Dancer and Seattle Rhyme. Lomond won the Group 1 2000 Guineas and his offspring featured Group 1 stars such as Marling, Valanour and River North. Seattle Slew, of course, was the US Triple Crown hero of 1977 before going on to become a hugely influential sire whose male line has become one of the most dominant in North America, largely thanks to the exploits of his son A.P. Indy and the powerful line that champion has established (Bernardini, Malibu Moon, Pulpit, Tapit, etc). Being related to a successful stallion boosts the prospects of a younger relation doing well in that role too, and as Awtaad is by the sire of Sea The Stars and from the family of three Group 1 sires, that places him highly among the most promising members of this cohort of young stallions. He looks likely to get his best in the seven to 14-furlong range, and if he lives up to his full potential then he could become a classic sire. AWTAAD (IRE) – br.2013 – Cape Cross – Asheerah, 5 wins inc Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr1), Solonaway Stakes (Gr2), Tetrarch Stakes (L), 3rd St James's Palace Stakes (Gr1). Sire in Ireland. Rathbarry Stud recruit Ajaya is one of them. It appears, however, that he may have just one crop. He was among the leading sprint juveniles of 2015, rated 117 by Timeform and winner of the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York, beating subsequent mile star Ribchester by one and a quarter lengths. That victory came a month after he failed by just a head to beat Gutaifan in the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte and a month before he finished fourth to Shalaa in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. Ajaya ran only twice as a three-year-old, finishing unplaced behind Quiet Reflection in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes and behind Take Cover in the Group 2 King George Stakes, which was disappointing given the promise he showed as a juvenile. The first foal of his dam, Ajaya is out of Nessina (by Hennessy), who is an unraced daughter of the Grade 1-placed Grade 2 Dahlia Handicap scorer Didina (by Nashwan). That mare is the dam of two stakes winners and the better of that pair was Tantina (by Distant View), a pattern-placed dual stakes winner in England. She won the Listed Oak Tree Stakes and the Listed Sceptre Stakes, she was third in the Group 3 Supreme Stakes, and she has done even better at stud as she is the dam of Cityscape (by Selkirk) and Bated Breath (by Dansili) and grandam of the Grade 1-placed Grade 3 scorer Suffused (by Champs Elysees). Cityscape won the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Stakes, was placed in a string of Group 1 contests, and has sired blacktype winners in his first crop of three-year-olds. Bated Breath won the Group 2 Temple Stakes, he was runner-up in the Group 1 July Cup, Group 1 King's Stand Stakes and Group 1 Sprint Cup, also has blacktype winners to his name. Didicoy (by Danzig), who is the third dam of Ajaya, was a speedy blacktype-placed triple winner, she was out of the Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes winner and Group 1 Phoenix Stakes runner-up Monroe (by Sir Ivor), and that made her a half-sister to the Group 1 star and juvenile champion Xaar (by Zafonic). Her sisters' descendants include the US Grade 1 stars Close Hatches (by First Defense) and Senure (by Nureyev). This is, of course, the famous Best In Show (by Traffic Judge) family from which leading sires such as El Gran Senor and Redoute's Choice have emerged. Their relationship to Ajaya is remote. He is inbred 3x4 to Danzig (by Northern Dancer), has 30 foals in his first crop, and looks likely to get sprinters and milers. Each of the 19 mares he received in 2018 was double-covered and he is not on the roster for 2019. AJAYA (GB) – b.2013 – Invincible Spirit – Nessina, 2 wins inc Gimcrack Stakes (Gr2), 2nd Prix Robert Papin (Gr2). Sire in Ireland. First foals in 2018. FOALS CATALOGUED:

He made a five-length winning debut over 12 furlongs at Roscommon in July of his four-year-old season and was short-headed by Hidden Cyclone over two furlongs farther at Killarney 12 months later. His official handicap mark was 90. Whytemount Stud's young recruit is proving popular with National Hunt breeders and he has 65 registered foals in his first crop. He is a half-brother to the runaway Group 1 Irish Derby hero and notably successful dual-purpose stallion Soldier Of Fortune (by Galileo) and also to Group 3 Meld Stakes winner Heliostatic (by Galileo), who has sired a flat Grade 1 scorer in South America. His siblings also include the listed-race winner Carriglawn (by Rock of Gibraltar) and his pattern-placed stakes-winning dam Affianced (by Erins Isle) is a half-sister to the classic-placed Group 1 scorer and leading dual-purpose sire Sholokhov (by Sadler's Wells). The mare's siblings also include Zavaleta (by Kayhasi), the stakes-winning dam of Group 1 winner and somewhat successful sire Intense Focus (by Giant's Causeway). There are many other blacktype horses to be found under the second, third and earlier generations of this family, but it is the strong records of his closer relations that suggest that Affinisea will be successful in his new role. Air Force Blue was one of the most brilliant two-year-olds this century, a Timeform 128p-rated star who swept the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, Group 1 National Stakes and Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes by an aggregate margin of eight and a quarter lengths. His only defeat at two came on his second start, when chasing home Buratino in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Sadly, the Aidan O'Brien-trained bay showed little in four starts at three, finishing well-beaten in two classics, in the Group 1 July Cup and, on his final start, trailing home last of seven in a Group 3 at the Curragh. He was retired to Coolmore's US division – Ashford Stud – but will probably have quite a few runners here from 2020.
He was bred by Stone Farm, cost $490,000 as a yearling, and is the best of several winners out of the stakes-placed Chatham (by Maria's Mon). Two of that mare's siblings have produced a stakes winning daughter at stud, and their dam, Circle Of Gold (by Seeking The Gold), is an unraced full-sister to Flanders.
That's the US-born Flanders – and not the well-known Irish-born broodmare of the same name – and she was the two-year-old filly champion there in 1994 when winning the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes, Grade 1 Frizette Stakes, and Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes. She then became the dam of two horses of note: Surfside (by Seattle Slew) and Battle Plan (by Empire Maker). The latter won the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap and was runner-up in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap, both over nine furlongs, and is a minor blacktype sire in Japan, whereas Surfside was a Breeders' Cup-placed multiple Grade 1 star who was crowned US champion three-year-old filly in 2000. Surfside is the dam of Grade 3 scorer Irish Surf (by Giant's Causeway) and grandam of Group 3 Prix d'Arenberg winner and Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes third High Celebrity (by Invincible Spirit), and other descendants of Flanders include Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks third Open Water (by Include). There are other talented horses to be found within the branches of these first three generations of the family, but nothing among them to guide us as to how Air Force Blue might fare as a sire. There are 114 registered foals in his first crop and he looks likely to get his best winners in the broad five to 10-furlong range. Given the immense talent he showed at two, it is reasonable to expect that some of his offspring will also do well at that age. AIR FORCE BLUE (USA) - b.2013 - War Front - Chatham, 4 wins inc Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1), National Stakes (Gr1), Phoenix Stakes (Gr1), 2nd Coventry Stakes (Gr2). Sire in USA. First foals in 2018.

Some of the early Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert) stallions are doing well and that augurs well for the prospects of those by his three-parts brother Kodiac (by Danehill). The latter has an increasing number of sons going to stud and dual Group 2 scorer Adaay, who stands at Whitsbury Manor Stud, is among them,
A €54,000 Goffs foal who made 240,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, the William Haggas-trained colt made a winning debut over six furlongs at Newbury in mid-May of his juvenile season, beating subsequent Group 2 star Kodi Bear, another who had his first foals this year. He followed that with victory over the same trip at Yarmouth, was unplaced in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Ascot and then finished third to Limato in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes. He was off the track until the following April, when he was again placed behind Limato, and he followed that effort with wins in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes and Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes, in the latter beating his old rival and subsequent Group 1 star by a length.
Although unplaced behind Muhaarar in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup, he bounced back two months later to beat Coulsty – another with first foals in 2018 – by half a length in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes, his first start over seven furlongs.
Adaay is the best of six winners from the first six foals out of Lady Lucia (by Royal Applause), a mare who was herself only placed as a juvenile. The sextet include nine-times scorer Pour La Victoire (by Antonius Pius), five-times winner Bushcraft (by Bushranger), and the multiple stakes-placed sprinter Mullionmileanhour (by Mull of Kintyre) who has been siring winners from few opportunities. Lady Lucia is a half-sister to the pattern-placed winner Creative Mind (by Danehill Dancer), she is out of the dual juvenile scorer Inventive (by Sheikh Albadou) and her grandam, two-time winner Ingenuity (by Clever Trick), was a half-sister to the prolific stakes winner Empire Pool (by Sharrood). This is a weak pedigree for a stallion prospect, so it will be interesting to see how he turns out. There are 92 registered foals in Adaay's first crop, so he won't be short on representation, and he looks a likely candidate to get sprinters and milers, some who stay 10 furlongs, and potentially some smart juveniles in the second half of the season. ADAAY (IRE) – b.2012 – Kodiac – Lady Lucia, 5 wins inc Hungerford Stakes (Gr2), Sandy Lane Stakes (Gr2), Carnarvon Stakes (L), 2nd Criterion Stakes (Gr3), 3rd Park Stakes (Gr2), Pavilion Stakes (Gr3), Rose Bowl Stakes (L). The brilliant middle-distance horse Montjeu (by Sadler's Wells) died quite young at stud but was already established as one of Europe's leading classic sires. That tally includes Marked Marvel, the three-length conqueror of Brown Panther in 2011's edition of the Group 1 St Leger at Doncaster. He stands at Haras d'Etreham in France.
The best of three stakes winners out of the Group 2 Falmouth Stakes runner-up Waldmark (by Mark of Esteem), those siblings include Walderche (by Monsun), the Group 3 Prix Penelope scorer whose Andre Fabre-trained son Waldgeist (by Galileo) advertised his classic potential with victory in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in late November.
Waldmark is a half-sister to the Group 1 Deutsches Derby winner and Haras du Thenney stallion Waldpark (by Dubawi), who also had his first foals in 2016, and their dam is the dual joint-champion Wurftaube (by Acatenango), a Group 1-placed filly who won both the Group 2 Gerling Preis and Group 2 Deutsches St Leger.
Her half-sister Wurfscheibe (by Tiger Hill) was a multiple pattern winner in Germany and her stakes-placed half-sister Wurfspiel (by Lomitas) is the dam of this year's Grade 1 Man O' War Stakes winner Wake Forest (by Sir Percy), a colt who was Group 1-placed in Italy before crossing the Atlantic. Haras de Saint Arnoult's Sommerabend is among them and he covered 71 mares in his first season. The high-class miler was prolific, his blacktype wins featured the Group 2 Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud and the Group 2 Grosse Europa Meile at Munich, and Timeform rated him 120 at the age of seven. His dam, Sommernacht (by Monsun), was runner-up in the Group 3 Premio Primi Passi over six furlongs at San Siro as a juvenile, but his siblings include the 11-furlong Group 3 scorer Sommertag (by Tiger Hill), 10-furlong listed race winner Sinnerman (by Tiger Hill), and the stakes-placed middle-distance filly Sommerflora (by Pivotal). His grandam, Shona (by Windwurf), was a stakes winner in Germany and her descendants also include the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin scorer Sirius (by Dashing Blade), whose best performance in 2016 was when runner-up to Ito in the Group 2 Gerling-Preis, also over 12 furlongs. A grandson of the juvenile star and brilliant Group 1 2000 Guineas winner Zafonic (by Gone West), Xtension is the best son of 1997's two-year-old champion Xaar and although he did not share their brilliance at two, he was Timeform 116-rated at that age having won the Group 2 Vintage Stakes and been placed in both the Group 2 Coventry Stakes and Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.
He finished fourth to Makfi in the Group 1 2000 Guineas and then third to Dick Turpin in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat, he was sent out to Hong Kong a few months later and became a dual Group 1 star there, taking the BMW Champions' Mile at Sha Tin at both four and five years of age. Timeform rated him 123. He was third to Able One in the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile and he was placed in several of the region's top non-pattern events, races such as the Hong Kong Derby, Stewards' Cup and Hong Kong Gold Cup, which carry only local top-level status, rather than international status, thereby counting only as listed events.
Xtension, who covered 31 mares in his first season at Rathbarry Stud, is out of Great Joy (by Grand Lodge), the stakes-placed grandam of this year's Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Harry Angel (by Dark Angel). She is a half-sister to listed scorer A La Carte (by Caerleon) and also to the dam of Group 1-placed juvenile stakes winner Wathab (by Cadeaux Genereux).
Cheese Soup (by Spectacular Bid), the unraced grandam of Xtension, was out of the prolific Avum (by Umbrella Fella), a blacktype scorer whose progeny included Grade 2 scorer Minneapple (by Riverman), pattern-placed stakes winner Lyphard's Princess (by Lyphard) and also the Grade 3 scorer and notable broodmare Baroness Direct (by Blushing Groom). What makes that mare of interest is that her Grade 1-placed daughter Immerse (by Cox's Ridge) became the dam of Grade 1 star and somewhat successful sire Stephen Got Even (by A.P. Indy) and she is the grandam of the dual Grade 1-winning filly Artemis Agrotera (by Roman Ruler). Lyphard's Princess, on the other hand, was the dam of Grade 2 Ohio Derby scorer Private Man (by Private Account). Small numbers will not help Xtension's prospects of getting noticed, but given the record that Rathbarry Stud has in coming up with stallions who sire winners at all levels, it would not be a surprise to see him get the occasional high-class performer. XTENSION (IRE) – br.2007 – Xaar – Great Joy, 4 wins inc Champions' Mile (Gr1-twice), Vintage Stakes (Gr2), 2nd Coventry Stakes (Gr2), Hong Kong Classic Mile (L), Hong Kong Derby (L), Hong Kong Gold Cup (L), Sha Tin Trophy (L), Stewards' Cup (L), 3rd Hong Kong Mile (Gr1), Prix Jean Prat (Gr1), Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1), Jockey Club Mile (Gr2), Hong Kong Gold Cup (L).
